Book Ir Genes and Ia Antigens

Download or read book Ir Genes and Ia Antigens written by Hugh Mcdevitt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ir Genes and Ia Antigens features papers that were presented at the Third Ir Gene Workshop held in Asilomar, California, December 13-16, 1976. The book is organized into seven parts that correspond to the seven sessions held during the workshop. The first session focused on the definition of the I-E and I-C subregions, and the mapping and cellular expression of complementing Ir genes. The second session included papers on the expression of gene products of the I region. The third session covered two major areas: (1) the biochemical characterization and primary structure of la antigens; and (2) the possible carbohydrate nature of la antigenic determinant. The studies presented in the fourth session focused on the role of I-region gene products in cellular interactions. The fifth session discussed the "recognition" functions controlled by the I region of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The sixth session featured papers on la-containing T cell factors. Finally, the seventh session examined the properties of T-cell antigen receptors.

Book Biology of the Mouse Histocompatibility 2 Complex

Download or read book Biology of the Mouse Histocompatibility 2 Complex written by J. de Klein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somewhere I heard a story of a bridge and a painter. The bridge was enormous and was made all of metal, and the painter's job was to keep it from rusting. He would start at one end and slowly proceed, day by day, month by month, toward the other end, painting the bridge. But no sooner would he finish with the painting than the bridge would begin to rust again. The rust, too, would start at one end and slowly proceed toward the other end, systematically destroying the painter's endeavor. And so the painter would return to where he had started, and begin painting again, slowly proceeding toward the other end of the bridge, always just one step ahead of the rust. And if the story is true, the painter might still be painting that bridge-a modern Sisyphus! During the writing of this book, the story of the painter and his bridge kept coming to mind. The field the book covers has been developing so rapidly that, like the painter, I too had to return to where I had started and fight the rust of obsolescence. But unlike the painter, I had a deadline to meet, which constituted a point of no return. And so, sending off this manuscript, I have no choice but to watch the fruits of my endeavor be overtaken by the rust.

Download or read book Histocompatibility Antigens written by B. Parham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) was discovered as a con sequence of the chronic problem encountered by cancer biologists in the early years of this century: the failure to maintain tumor lines by serial passage in outbred mice. A number of observations pointed to genetic similarity being a prerequisite for successful transplantation and they were incorporated into a genetic theory of transplantation by C.C. Little. This prompted scientists like Little to initiate breeding experiments designed to test his hypothesis and produce genetically identical mice which would permit the growth of trans planted tumors. Most inbred strains of mice commonly used in immunology derive from those efforts. Transplantation of normal tissues obeyed the same rules found for malignant tissues and rejection was shown to be an immunological phenomenon. G.D. Snell showed that a single genetic locus determined rapid rejection of skin grafts. This was initially called the Major Histocompatibility Locus but was subsequently shown to include many functionally related genes and renamed the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC). In mouse this is the H-2 complex and man the HLA complex. During this same period P.A.

Book The Natural Anti Gal Antibody as Foe Turned Friend in Medicine

Download or read book The Natural Anti Gal Antibody as Foe Turned Friend in Medicine written by Uri Galili and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Natural Anti-Gal Antibody as Foe Turned Friend in Medicine provides a comprehensive review of the natural anti-Gal antibody, which is the most abundant antibody in humans constituting ~1% of immunoglobulins and the carbohydrate antigen it recognizes, the a-gal epitope. It discusses the discovery of this antigen/antibody system, its evolution in mammals, the pathological effects of this antibody, and its possible use in various therapies in humans. Most significantly, the book discusses microbial and regenerative therapies in which an antibody present in all humans may be harnessed as an in vivo pharmaceutical agent that enables a wide variety of therapies. Some of these therapies are described as experimental studies that are compiled in this book, other already studied therapies in the area of cancer immunotherapy are also included in this book. Provides tactics on how to improve cancer immunotherapy and viral vaccine immunogenicity Includes discussions on therapies that accelerate the healing of normal and chronic wounds, and of burns Covers the regeneration of bio-implants

Book The Antigens

  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2014-05-10
  • ISBN : 1483269663
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book The Antigens written by Michael Sela and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antigens, Volume VII is a comprehensive treatise covering all aspects of antigens, including their chemistry and biology as well as their immunologic role and expression. Different aspects of the genetic control of the immune response are explored, along with the link between infection and autoimmunity. Comprised of four chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the determinant-specific genetic regulation of the immune response and the genes that control it. The next chapter deals with the molecular genetics and polymorphism of of class II (Ia) antigens, as well as the correlation between immunogenetic and molecular genetic maps. The antigen-specific T cell clones and the specific factors derived from them are then examined. The last chapter considers the relationship between infection and autoimmunity; the role of infection in the expression of class II antigens; and processes responsible for the induction of autoimmune diseases. A specific therapy for these diseases is described. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners and researchers in immunology, experimental and clinical medicine, biochemistry, and other disciplines.
