Download or read book My Dead Parents written by Anya Yurchyshyn and published by Crown. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of Esquire's "Best Nonfiction Books of 2018" "Sharp and searching...a potent look at the fraught, painful, and complicated relationship between parents and children, and the mysteries — revelatory, difficult — that can and cannot be solved." — Boston Globe Anya Yurchyshyn grew up in a narrow townhouse in Boston, every corner filled with the souvenirs of her parents’ adventurous international travels. On their trips to Egypt, Italy, and Saudi Arabia, her mother, Anita, and her father, George, lived an entirely separate life from the one they led as the parents of Anya and her sister – one that Anya never saw. The parents she knew were a brittle, manipulative alcoholic and a short-tempered disciplinarian: people she imagined had never been in love. When she was sixteen, Anya’s father was killed in a car accident in Ukraine. At thirty-two, she became an orphan when her mother drank herself to death. As she was cleaning out her childhood home, she suddenly discovered a trove of old letters, photographs, and journals hidden in the debris of her mother’s life. These lost documents told a very different story than the one she’d believed to be true – of a forbidden romance; of a loving marriage, and the loss of a child. With these revelations in hand, Anya undertook an investigation, interviewing relatives and family friends, traveling to Wales and Ukraine, and delving deeply into her own difficult history in search of the truth, even uncovering the real circumstances of her father’s death – not an accident, perhaps, but something more sinister. In this inspiring and unflinchingly honest debut memoir, Anya interrogates her memories of her family and examines what it means to be our parents’ children. What do we inherit, and what can we choose to leave behind? How do we escape the ghosts of someone else’s past? And can we learn to love our parents not as our parents, but simply as people? Universal and personal; heartbreaking and redemptive, My Dead Parents helps us to see why sometimes those who love us best hurt us most.

Download or read book Those Miraculous Sunflower Seeds written by Katja Kowalec and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories told and untold about the Second World War must be infinite and will only ebb (not end) when the last old soldier leaves this world for the next. Katjas story remained dormant for many years after the seed to write about her wartime experiences was planted unwittingly by her father. Mr. Mrzyglod was an extraordinary raconteur, and during our teatime breaks at her first dress factory in Mooimark House, he would entertain us with stories about his family in Poland particularly when he was a boy. Tales that were humorous and appealing. Accounts regarding the war were only touched on briefly, but there was no doubt about their sorrowful misery. I listened, enthralled, while Katja nodded thoughtfully. We must write about all this we promised one another. That was forty-eight years ago! It proves that it is never too late to realize a dream. And so this is Katjas story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James tells the story of how a once prosperous neighborhood became gang-ridden, drugged out, and violent-prone. He speaks through the lips of Benjamin Luther Slokum and how Ben related to ghosts of his grandma, his brother Ivy, and his cousin Roy. These people were all murdered on the corner of Fifth and Dice Streets in the heart of Fifeville in Ben’s presence. Ben hid while his cousin was gunned down by Jamie Charles, a notorious member of the Jamaican posse. A stray bullet killed Ben’s grandma. Ben held a gun but did not open fire. Ben had been a tagalong with the Fifeville Crew but was never a hardcore gangster. After the untimely death of his beloved ones, he decided that he would have nothing to more to do with gangs of the gangster lifestyle. He found out that a life outside the gang was every bit as trying as one within it. He met Moisha (Mo), at a party one night, and he and she got married, brought two children into the world (twins, Esau [Saw] and Jacob [Jay]), and tried to make a good life for them all in the same house that Ben had grown up in, in the same neighborhood where his relatives had been murdered—on the Corner of Fifth and Dice Streets in Charlottesville, Virginia. Ben decided that he would elicit change in Fifeville from gangs, dope, and violence by being a living example showing that anyone could have a good life without succumbing to criminal activities. But the crime around Ben and his family became a ravenous beast that consumed Ben and Mo’s firstborn son, Saw. That murder turned Ben’s life upside down. Mo left him and took his remaining son with her. He ultimately lost the house he tried to cling to. He lost his job, and he temporarily lost his mind. Mo’s love was the balm that healed his soul. He came to himself after talking to his friend Harry, an ex-con and ex-gang member. The narrative ends with Mo, Ben, and Jay, clinging to one another vowing to pick up the pieces and start over. This novel brings to life many of the hidden facts about drug dealing and gangbanging and how these helped ruin and destroy Fifeville.
