Book excerpt: William Wordsworth is chiefly remembered as one of the 'Lake Poets'. Yet he was also one of the founders of English Romanticism, a writer whose early revolutionary fervor imbued his verse and his ideals. Much of Wordsworth's work was inspired by nature, but to a style rich in lyrical imagery he brought a deep interest in liberal humanitarianism and a profound concern for the lives, habits and speech of ordinary people, especially country people. This collection includes: 'I wandered lonely as a cloud' ('Daffodils'), 'Ode. Intimations of Immortality', 'Character of the Happy Warrior', 'The Solitary Reaper', 'To a Sky-Lark', 'Tintern Abbey', and extracts from 'The Prelude'.

Book Romantic Thoughts in Wordsworth s I wandered lonely as a cloud

Download or read book Romantic Thoughts in Wordsworth s I wandered lonely as a cloud written by Victoria Tutschka and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-12-09 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Erfurt (Sprachwissenschaft), course: Romanticism, language: English, abstract: William Wordsworth is known as one of the most influential English Romantic Poet. Born in the year 1770 in Cockermouth, a beautiful landscape of the English Lake District, his whole life and work was characterized by the love of nature. Yet in his early ages he and his beloved sister Dorothy were taught important poetry of Shakespeare and Milton by their rarely present father. William was treated harsh by his relatives, when he had to stay at his mother’s home in Penrith as a teenager, but as a result he found comfort, tranquility and happiness in exploring the beauty of the nature on his own. In the first years of the 1790s he visited France and was impressed by the revolutionary force of the Republican movement. During his stay he fell in love with Annett Vallon, a French woman and got a daughter with her. Due to the developing British-French war, he had to leave France soon and saw Anett and their daughter seldom again, but always stayed in contact with them. In 1793 Wordsworth wrote the first version of the so-called manifesto of English Romantic Criticism: the ‘Preface to Lyrical Ballads’ with “experimental“ poems. Together with his friend, the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, he produced the first of four editions of ‘Lyrical Ballads’ in the year 1798. In this central Romantic work, he defines poetry as " the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings from emotions recollected in tranquility.".

Book The Prelude and Other Poems

Download or read book The Prelude and Other Poems written by William Wordsworth and published by Alma Classics. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Though absent long, These forms of beauty have not been to me, As is a landscape to a blind man's eye: But oft, in lonely rooms, and mid the din Of towns in cities, I have owed to them, In hours of weariness, sensations sweet, Felt in the blood, and felt along the heart” William Wordsworth's verse was the embodiment of the Romantic age, with its evocation of a unifying spirit running through all things. This collection brings together a rich and diverse selection of his works, from the epic autobiographical masterpiece The Prelude to much-loved shorter poems such as 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud' and 'She Was a Phantom of Delight'. Alongside his more personal and introspective compositions, poems such as 'Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey', 'She Dwelt among the Untrodden Ways' and 'The Idiot Boy' demonstrate, in an era of political and social ferment, the manner in which Wordsworth, together with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, forged a revolutionary new poetic style through the publication of Lyrical Ballads – one that embraced the vernacular and subjects previously deemed unworthy of poetry – and thus changed the literary landscape of England for ever.

Book The Grasmere Journals

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780192831309
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book The Grasmere Journals written by Dorothy Wordsworth and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dorothy Wordsworth's The Grasmere Journals, begun in May 1800 while at Dove Cottage, and continued for nearly three years until January 1803, is perhaps the best-loved of all journals. Noting the walks and the weather, the friends, country neighbors and beggars on the roads, William Wordsworth's marriage, the composition of poetry, and their concern for Coleridge, her words bring those first years to vivid and intimate life. This edition has been prepared directly from the manuscripts with undeciphered words clarified, first thoughts, later insertions and deletions indicated, and Dorothy's hasty punctuation largely restored. It also offers rich explanatory notes, containing much new detail on friends and family, the scarcely-known people of the Grasmere valley, the books that were read, and the connections with William Wordsworth's poetry.
