Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a starter, let's face it; I made it to 94 years and frankly, that is an achievement that dwarf s anything else I can say about my long life so far, (and I ain't through yet.) If I were to point to the most significant event of my life I would have to say that I was a witness to a critical event in American history and perhaps in world history, the devastating attack on our Navy at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The rest of my life was somewhat nondescript in the overall scheme of things in this world. I was born (just like everyone else) in Holland Michigan, way back, a good 200 years ago. I was a musician from the start, playing the harmonica at 10 years old. (Also, later the ukulele, mandolin, Hawaiian guitar, orchestral guitar, and marimba.) My first performance was with the harmonica before my 8th grade class! Later on as a teenager I played in an orchestra and performed at dances, night clubs and church events. Currently, I duo on the classical guitar with my flute player playing occasional concerts. Now that I think of it, I was pretty good. Being a small 109 pound guy I joined the Navy in 1940 so as to not get drafted. WW2 was already raging in Europe. I had to enlist for 6 years. That put me in WW2 from the beginning to the end and then some. Hey, I also performed on the guitar in the Navy aboard ship (between naval battles!) Upon discharge in 1946 I joined with my high school buddy to get the first printed circuit patent. I am really proud of that because printed circuits are in everything that's electronic. And we started it! It was particularly smart of me because 40 years later I needed the printed circuit in my pacemaker! Such foresight! At the same time I entered college at MIT. Our patent royalties helped pay for tuition. As long as I am being proud, I may as well include graduating from that top technical school in the country, which is pretty good for a son of an immigrant from Italy. From thereon my engineering career included teaching at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo lecturing at USC and work in computers and programming. But of course, most of my work was in the Defense industry. Now in retirement I am doing things I like to do: play music and write. Looking back I think that getting an engineering degree was a big mistake. I should have been a gigolo. Look at what I missed! Alas, it is too late!

A lot can be said about the experiences we go through and the changes we observe. This book is a collection of short articles and essays about some aspects of life in general and old age in particular. Its goal is to delight readers and help them to see the positive aspects of the senior life. Topics included cover both serious and funny sides of growing old. Some topics are general, and others are basic lessons I learned while living in the Middle East, Europe, and North America. For the ease of reading, the articles are presented independently from one another whenever possible. Sources utilized are cited in the end of each article. Few related topics are also included for stimulation of worked-out minds.

I’m sure it will come back to me. Aging gets old after a while. Pun intended. When you need to find humor in the not-so marvelous life changes, pick up Best Old Folks Jokes Ever and chuckle along with everyone else who is growing older. That’s literally everyone. A little laughter can go a long way in accepting the inevitable with gratitude and grace.

Book The Way I Saw It

Download or read book The Way I Saw It written by Harold A Stein M D Msc (Oph) Frcsc and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My walk through life in words and pictures." HS Dr. Harold Stein grew up in the small border town of Niagara Falls, Canada and went on to become a world authority in ophthalmology. Not all the things he learned along the way came from a text book or lecture as he illustrates in his memoirs. Follow along as he traces his early years, dodging across moving trains to get to school, trading a rifle for bugle in high school and the life changing encounter which inspired him to choose medicine as a career. While ophthalmology is a serious specialty, Dr. Stein never loses sight of his sense of humor, sharing his own faux pas in investments, family life and medicine. His stories are also a journey through history: the pre war years in Canada, of the post-war years at university as Toronto grew to become a world class city. In those years society, culture and technology changes and Dr. Stein gives us a front row seat through the 1950s and 1960s as he pursues his studies at the world famous Mayo Clinic and later Oxford University before starting at a suburban hospital built on a dirt road and surrounded by farms. Join him as he travels the world, sometimes for pleasure, sometimes to give back by using his skills to treat patients in the third world who would otherwise be blind or go blind. It's an adventure of a lifetime with lots of laughs along the way. HAROLD A. Book excerpt: In 2009 after publication of my last book - National Service, Elvis & Me! - I planned to write another book. But fate intervened and after self-publishing my previous books demand grew from others who wanted help to get their own books into print.Whilst we were busy publishing books for others, I appealed for anecdotes and stories to include in Why Should England Tremble. Over 60 people generously submitted contributions, but it was only in March 2012, on a tranquil island, near Luxor in Egypt, that I was able to start shuffling the entries and putting the book together. Why Should England Tremble? is the result - a Miscellany of Anecdotes, Facts, Humour & Memories which have come from many individuals and sources.I do hope you enjoy reading this book which I feel it is the sort of light hearted book you can pick up and laugh at and put down in between reading the more serious stuff.

Deep in the tobacco land of North Carolina, nothing's been the same since the boys shipped off to war and worry took their place. Thirteen-year-old Lucy Brown is precocious and itching for adventure. Then Allie Bert Tucker wanders into town, an outcast with a puzzling past, and Lucy figures the two of them can solve any curious crime they find—just like her hero, Nancy Drew. Their chance comes when a man goes missing, a woman stops speaking, and an eccentric gives the girls a mystery to solve that takes them beyond the ordinary. Their quiet town, seasoned with honeybees and sweet tea, becomes home to a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp. More men go missing. And together, the girls embark on a journey to discover if we ever really know who the enemy is.
