With first-hand accounts of the pandemic as it unfolded, it explores the social and the political through the lens of the outbreak. Featuring contributors located in India, the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Bulgaria, the book presents us with simultaneous multiple histories of our time. The volume documents the beginning of social distancing and lockdown measures adopted by countries around the world and analyses how these bore upon prevailing social conditions in specific locations. It presents the authors’ personal observations in a lucid conversational style as they reflect on themes such as the reorganization of political debates and issues, the experience of the marginalized, theodicy, government policy responses, and shifts into digital space under lockdown, all of these under an overarching narrative of the healthcare and economic crisis facing the world. Download or read book Viral World written by Long T. Bui and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the catastrophe of COVID-19 provided a momentous time for groups, institutions, and states to reassess their worldviews and relationship to the entire world. Following multiple case studies across dozens of countries throughout the course of the pandemic, this book is a timely contribution to cultural knowledge about the pandemic and the viral politics at the heart of it. Mapping the various forms of global consciousness and connectivity engendered by the crisis, the book offers the framework of "viral worlding," defined as viral forms of relationality, becoming, and communication. It demonstrates how worlding or world-making processes accelerated with the novel coronavirus. New emergent forms of being global "went viral" to address conditions of inequality as well as forge possibilities for societal transformation. Considering the tumult wrought by the pandemic, Bui analyzes progressive movements for democracy, abolition, feminism, environmentalism, and socialism against the world-shattering forces of capitalism, authoritarianism, racism, and militarism. Focusing on ways the pandemic disproportionately impacted marginalized communities, particularly in the Global South, this book juxtaposes the closing of their lifeworlds and social worlds by hegemonic global actors with increased collective demands for freedom, mobility, and justice by vulnerable people. The breadth and depth of the book thus provides students, scholars, and general readers with critical insights to understanding the world(s) of COVID-19 and collective efforts to build better new ones.

Book The Covid Consensus Updated

Download or read book The Covid Consensus Updated written by Toby Green and published by Hurst Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first years of the pandemic, the political mainstream agreed that ‘following the science’ with hard lockdowns and vaccine mandates was the best way to preserve life. But social science reveals the true human cost of this policy. The Covid Consensus provides an internationalist-left perspective on the world’s Covid-19 response, which has had devastating consequences for democratic rights and the poor worldwide. As the fortunes of the richest soared, nationwide shutdowns devastated small businesses, the working classes and the Global South’s informal economies. Gender-based violence surged, and the mental health of young people was severely compromised. Meanwhile, unprecedented health restrictions prevented participation in daily life without proof of vaccination. Toby Green and Thomas Fazi argue that these policies grossly exacerbated existing trends of inequality, mediatisation and surveillance, with grave implications for the future. Rich in human detail, The Covid Consensus tackles head-on the refusal of the global political class and mainstream media to report the true extent of the erosion of democratic processes and the socioeconomic assault on the poor. As the world emerges from the pandemic to confront new modes of monitoring and control, this left-wing reappraisal of global Covid policies exposes the injustices and political failings that have produced the biggest crisis since the Second World War.

Book The Grace Filled Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. Stephen R. Button
  • Publisher : Covenant Books, Inc.
  • Release : 2023-04-03

  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book The Grace Filled Life written by Dr. Stephen R. Button and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jesus said, "My grace is sufficient," Christians often forget that grace is the predominant characteristic of their Christian experience and therefore tend to overlook how grace permeates every aspect of their life. Were it not for grace, we would still be lost in our sin, unwilling to or incapable of enjoying the benefits of a relationship with Jesus. I chose the word panoply to describe God's grace because grace is so overwhelmingly abundant and impressively available to the believer. God's grace is more than sufficient. It is abundantly available to all that belong to Him. There is a reservoir of grace that will never empty. Christ was saying there is nothing else that will compare with it, nothing else that will replace it, and nothing else that will embody it. Grace is sufficient because there is nothing that can be added to it, supplement it, or enhance it. Well written, interesting and easy to read. It presents a practical understanding and comprehensive application of grace to Christian believers' daily lives, written, at times, out of the crucible of personal experience. It serves as a wonderful tribute to your Dad, Dr. Lloyd Button's life and ministry. It also represents an incredible amount of careful thought and work. I found it to be both clear and captivating!
