Book An Analytical and Experimental Study of the Plane Incompressible Turbulent Free Shear Layer with Arbitrary Velocity Ratio and Pressure Gradient

Download or read book An Analytical and Experimental Study of the Plane Incompressible Turbulent Free Shear Layer with Arbitrary Velocity Ratio and Pressure Gradient written by Cullen Milo Sabin and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first order approximation is derived in similarity coordinates for the velocity variation across a mixing zone between two streams of different velocities in an arbitrary pressure gradient. The velocity profiles obtained are functions of a single parameter, the ratio of the velocity of the slow stream to that of the fast stream. The first order velocity profiles are compared to those obtained from the complete solution to the zero pressure gradient case by Gortler and good agreement is found when the velocity ratio is greater than 0.5. The form of the eddy diffusivity appropriate to the first order theory is determined from analysis and experimental data. This form leads to an explicit transformation for the similarity coordinate requiring only a single empirical constant for all cases. This similarity coordinate is shown to reduce to Gortler's variable in the constant pressure case. Expressions for the shear and the mixing layer width for the general case are presented, and shown to check the data from several cases. A hot wire anemometer which was specially designed and constructed for taking the experimental data in a water channel is described. (Author).

Book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Flow Over Single and Double Backward Facing Steps

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Flow Over Single and Double Backward Facing Steps written by Stanford University. Thermosciences Division. Thermosciences Division and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A semi-empirical analysis is developed for the over-all flow pattern of subsonic turbulent flow over backward facing steps. Good agrement is found between theory and experiment for the prediction of two-dimensional reattachment length for small values of step height to throat width ratio; an asymptotic solution for large values of step height is also given and discussed. Mean velocity profiles calculated by the present analysis are shown; they require an empirical fit at one point. Good agreement with experiment is found in the region near the step face, but agreement is poor near the reattachment region. Experimental results are represented for flow patterns over backward facing steps covering a wide range of geometric variables. Velocity profile measurements are given for both single and double steps. The stall region is shown to consist of a complex pattern involving three distinct regions. The double step contains an asymmetry for large expansions, but approaches the single-step configuration with symmetric stall regions for small values of area ratio. No effect on flow pattern or reattachment length is found for a wide range of Reynolds numbers and turbulence intensities, provided the flow is fully turbulent before the step. (Author).

Download or read book Computational Hydraulics written by Ioana Popescu and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Hydraulics introduces the concept of modeling and the contribution of numerical methods and numerical analysis to modeling. It provides a concise and comprehensive description of the basic hydraulic principles, and the problems addressed by these principles in the aquatic environment. Flow equations, numerical and analytical solutions are included. The necessary steps for building and applying numerical methods in hydraulics comprise the core of the book and this is followed by a report of different example applications of computational hydraulics: river training effects on flood propagation, water quality modelling of lakes and coastal applications. The theory and exercises included in the book promote learning of concepts within academic environments. Sample codes are made available online for purchasers of the book. Computational Hydraulics is intended for under-graduate and graduate students, researchers, members of governmental and non-governmental agencies and professionals involved in management of the water related problems. Author: Ioana Popescu, Hydroinformatics group, UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft , The Netherlands.

Book Partial Differential Equations in Action

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations in Action written by Sandro Salsa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is intended as an advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate course for students from various disciplines, including applied mathematics, physics and engineering. It has evolved from courses offered on partial differential equations (PDEs) over the last several years at the Politecnico di Milano. These courses had a twofold purpose: on the one hand, to teach students to appreciate the interplay between theory and modeling in problems arising in the applied sciences, and on the other to provide them with a solid theoretical background in numerical methods, such as finite elements. Accordingly, this textbook is divided into two parts. The first part, chapters 2 to 5, is more elementary in nature and focuses on developing and studying basic problems from the macro-areas of diffusion, propagation and transport, waves and vibrations. In turn the second part, chapters 6 to 11, concentrates on the development of Hilbert spaces methods for the variational formulation and the analysis of (mainly) linear boundary and initial-boundary value problems.
