Book excerpt: Therese Borchard may be one of the frankest, funniest people on the planet. That, combined with her keen writing abilities has made her Beliefnet blog, Beyond Blue, one of the most trafficked blogs on the site. BEYOND BLUE, the book, is part memoir/part self-help. It describes Borchard's experience of living with manic depression as well as providing cutting-edge research and information on dealing with mood disorders. By exposing her vulnerability, she endears herself immediately to the reader and then reduces even the most depressed to laughter as she provides a companion on the journey to recovery and the knowledge that the reader is not alone. Comprised of four sections and twenty-one chapters, BEYOND BLUE covers a wide range of topics from codependency to addiction, poor body image to postpartum depression, from alternative medicine to psychopharmacology, managing anxiety to applying lessons from therapy. Because of her laser wit and Erma Bombeck sense of humor, every chapter is entertaining as well as serious.

Book I Survived and Thrived

Download or read book I Survived and Thrived written by Joseph Sorge and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I want to share my experiences with you. I am eighty four years old, and I am not senile. Everything I wrote in this book is the truth. I am concerned about the way this country is heading. I have lived to see many administrations operate since nineteen thirty two. These politicians in DC ARE arrogant and power crazy. They want to dictate to us how we work, live and carry on. Many of them are guilty of tax evasion. They walk around as if they are immune to any penalty they should be given. WE tell them that majority of people are against their version of the health plan. They will use any trick to get their plan into the law. They forget that they are employed by the taxpayer. They want to run your life as they see fit. I and millions of veterans fought for our freedom, because we love this country We do not want these socialist thugs to ruin this. If you agree with me vote these politicians out of office, if they do not perform the American way. When you read this book you will thank me for enlightening everyone. Today you hear quite a bit about discrimination. In my early days there was always people being discriminated. To start with there were no laws to protect them. They took in stride, because they were too busy trying to survive the great depression. Today the so called depressed are always whining. They are lazy, do not want to work or get an education. All they want is handouts from the government. The only people should get money are the sick, handicap, elderly. Politicians cater to the lazy ones to get their votes. They are scheming to get illegals citizenship, to get more votes. They do not care about the future of this country. I do I want the younger generation to enjoy this great country, as I did. Especially my sons and grandchildren.

Download or read book Better to Live written by Alastair Campbell and published by John Murray. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last Christmas I almost killed myself. Almost. I've had a lot of almosts. Never gone from almost to deed. Don't think I ever will. But it was a bad almost. Bad. BETTER TO LIVE is Alastair Campbell's autobiographical, psychological and psychiatric study of his lifelong struggle with depression. He explores the childhood events and family relationships that have gone on to echo through his political career and private life. Every bit as direct and driven, clever and candid as he is, his quest to get to the bottom of his depression and its treatment animates an inspiring and uplifting book that really could save lives. We all know someone with depression. There is barely a family untouched by it. We may be talking about it more than we did, back in the era of 'boys don't cry' - they did you know - and when a brave face or a stiff upper lip or a best foot forward was seen as the only way to go. But we still don't talk about it enough. There is still stigma, and shame, and taboo. There is still the feeling that admitting to being sad or anxious makes us weak. It took me years, decades even to get to this point, but I passionately believe that the reverse is true and that speaking honestly about our feelings and experiences (whether as a depressive or as the friend or relative of a depressive) is the first and best step on the road to recovery. So that is what I have tried to do here.

Download or read book Surviving Depression written by Patricia A. Carlisle and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-12-04 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to lead a enjoyable and fulfilling life, helping you to become more aware of yourself and others around you. Have you ever felt really stuck? Like every day was a struggle to get through and you knew in your heart the next day would feel the same? After years of hard work and little to show for it, every day starts to feel like hard work. Facing daily discouragement and defeat weighs heavily on you. Have you lost your self-confidence and doubted everything you were doing? Are you frozen by the fear of failure? The irony of life can develop into many of our problems and become stumbling blocks that hold us back- They are often there because we get stuck in our own way of doing things. We can create a prison of continued, daily suffering for ourselves. And all we can do is agonize because we desperately want out. Each day you wake up in a fog hoping the cloud will lift. We simply can't see clearly enough to evaluate our problems and realize that each problem links back to an action or thought that created it. If only we could see this, we could untangle the threads and clear up our lives. Knowing the cause can make the problem much easier to fix if we can just get our minds in the right place. As you get older, it is all too easy to get in a rut-with fixed viewpoints, stuck emotions, ways that others can see clearly but you just think are 'right'. A life full of safe solutions, but if you start to shut out new experiences, or if you take less interest in new things, your capacity for enjoying life can diminish. You stay in your comfort zone, and as you get older, your comfort zone gets smaller and smaller. This is harmful because you stop doing things that give you pleasure. You need to stop worrying and start living, not just to be happy but for health reasons as well. Feeling good is not just a luxury; it is a vital necessity for good health and a long life. Being lonely is a normal part of our everyday lives. For example, we get sad when we fail in our exams, when we're rejected by the person we love, or when someone very close to us passes away. Depression, however, has consequences that could ruin your self-esteem, health, and well-being. Depression is a seriously hard thing to overcome. Many people get it only once in their lifetime. Other people get short periods of depression again and again, which makes life harder to live. However, there are certain steps you can take to overcome depression and alleviate the pain and suffering that stems from it. I hope this book will inspire you to live the kind of life you really want to live and you can overcome depression once and for all and live like a free bird without a cage.

Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Last Christmas I almost killed myself. Almost. I've had a lot of almosts. Never gone from almost to deed. Don't think I ever will. But it was a bad almost. Living Better is Alastair Campbell's honest, moving and life affirming account of his lifelong struggle with depression. It is an autobiographical, psychological and psychiatric study, which explores his own childhood, family and other relationships, and examines the impact of his professional and political life on himself and those around him. But it also lays bare his relentless quest to understand depression not just through his own life but through different treatments. Every bit as direct and driven, clever and candid as he is, this is a book filled with pain, but also hope -- he examines how his successes have been in part because of rather than despite his mental health problems -- and love. We all know someone with depression. There is barely a family untouched by it. We may be talking about it more than we did, back in the era of 'boys don't cry' - they did you know - and when a brave face or a stiff upper lip or a best foot forward was seen as the only way to go. Book Ten Lost Years 1929 1939

    Book Details:
  • Author : Barry Broadfoot
  • Publisher : McClelland & Stewart
  • Release : 2013-04-23
  • ISBN : 1551995042
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book Ten Lost Years 1929 1939 written by Barry Broadfoot and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of ordinary Canadians tell their own stories in this book. They tell them in their own words, and the impact is astonishing. As page after page of unforgettable stories rolls by, it is easy to see why this book sold 300,000 copies and why a successful stage play that ran for years was based on them. The stories, and the 52 accompanying photographs, tell of an extraordinary time. One tells how a greedy Maritime landlord ho tried to raise a widow's rent was tarred and gravelled; another how rape by the boss was part of a waitress's job. Other stories show Saskatchewan families watching their farms turn into deserts and walking away from them; or freight-trains black with hoboes clinging to them, criss-crossing the country in search of work; or a man stealing a wreath for his own wife's funeral. Throughout this portrait of the era before Canada had a social safety net, there are amazing stories of what Time magazine called "human tragedy and moral triumph during the hardest of times." In the end, this is an inspiring, uplifting book about bravery, one you will not forget.

Book excerpt: Note to Self: When you feel f&*ed up: Stop. Breathe. Talk to someone. Tell them stuff. Stop being an asshole and thinking you’re going to get through it alone. Problems are like broken pipes: they need a person to fix them. Oh, and clean your room, you filthy animal. Kevin Breel burst into the public's awareness when at 19 his TED talk became a worldwide phenomenon. Through the lens of his own near suicide, he shared his profoundly vulnerable story of being young, male and depressed in a culture that has no place for that. BOY MEETS DEPRESSION is a book that explores what it means to struggle and tells an honest, heartfelt story about how a meaningful life isn't found in perfection, it's found in our ability to heal and accept the dark parts of ourselves.

It proposes that grieving people do not necessarily need to be diagnosed with depression following the death of a loved one and guides them through exercises to express their depression in healthy ways. In a society where mourning and melancholia are often ignored, this book gives mourners the supported and reassurance necessary to understand and appreciate that their depression is a regular part of the grieving process.

Book Forever the Fat Kid

Download or read book Forever the Fat Kid written by Michael Boyd and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Boyd grew up in 1960s New Jersey-an overweight, shy kid who couldn't seem to find his place. He wasn't interested in the same things as the other kids in the neighborhood. He had a hard time making friends, and he was considered unpopular at best. He felt different because he was different. It just took a long time to figure it out. Forever the Fat Kid is not a harrowing journey from fat to fantastic. It is the difficult story of a black youth wrestling with his sexual identity, while struggling to develop in the turbulent American 1960s. Boyd's story takes him from Jersey to the Broadway stage, to major European cities, and even into the depths of depression ... but in the end, he finds hope. He finds who he was meant to be. It took years for Michael Boyd to find his way from fat to thin, shy to outgoing, and unpopular to admired. But he did eventually find his way, with the help of his art. It would be hard to picture the fat kid of the 1960s ruling the stage at the Apollo Theater years later, but it did happen. Through these experiences, Boyd discovered that coming of age, coming out, and coming to terms with one's life is a never-ending process.

Book Surviving the Great Depression

Download or read book Surviving the Great Depression written by Joaquin Bowman and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Depression, characterized by bread lines, general unemployment, bank and business failures, hit swiftly and unexpectantly. It challenged the inner and outer resources of the millions of bewildered people, coping with their responsibilities. And the Depression persisted, starting with the stock market crash in October, 1929, through various phases until the U.S. entered into World War II in December, 1941 and unemployment dropped below ten per cent. Prior to the financial collapse in 2008 most Americans had no idea what it was like to do without. Since WW II the economy has been, for the most part, on the upswing. As mortgages collapsed, however, and unemployment soared, Americans got a taste, just a taste, of the fear and hopelessness that gripped the nation during the Great Depression. This story is a record of how two people, Bill and Annie Hickey, with their three children, grew into and weathered through the long, hard period of that “Great Depression.”
