Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller! “Frank Hamer, last of the old breed of Texas Rangers, has not fared well in history or popular culture. John Boessenecker now restores this incredible Ranger to his proper place alongside such fabled lawmen as Wyatt Earp and Eliot Ness. Here is a grand adventure story, told with grace and authority by a master historian of American law enforcement. Frank Hamer can rest easy as readers will finally learn the truth behind his amazing career, spanning the end of the Wild West through the bloody days of the gangsters.” --Paul Andrew Hutton, author of The Apache Wars To most Americans, Frank Hamer is known only as the “villain” of the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde. Now, in Texas Ranger, historian John Boessenecker sets out to restore Hamer’s good name and prove that he was, in fact, a classic American hero. From the horseback days of the Old West through the gangster days of the 1930s, Hamer stood on the front lines of some of the most important and exciting periods in American history. He participated in the Bandit War of 1915, survived the climactic gunfight in the last blood feud of the Old West, battled the Mexican Revolution’s spillover across the border, protected African Americans from lynch mobs and the Ku Klux Klan, and ran down gangsters, bootleggers, and Communists. When at last his career came to an end, it was only when he ran up against another legendary Texan: Lyndon B. Johnson. Written by one of the most acclaimed historians of the Old West, Texas Ranger is the first biography to tell the full story of this near-mythic lawman.

Download or read book The New World of Jesus Parables written by Markus Locker and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not too many other texts in biblical studies received more attention than the parables of Jesus, in fact raising the question whether or not we need yet another book on this subject. The answer to this question will always remain an emphatic yes. For Jesus and the church, the parables are mysteries, i.e. not beyond understanding, but open to an infinite possibility of meaning. This perhaps explains why more than a century after Adolf Jülicher convincingly argued for a non-allegorical reading of the parables this quest is far from over. Notwithstanding their significant metaphorical force, this book will attempt to shed new light on the parables in understanding and reading these short stories as speech-events (J.G. Hamann) and language-games (L. Wittgenstein). Parables do not primarily signify abstract truths, but illustrate a world reminiscent of God’s kingdom. Engaging in the parables, therefore, does not simply evoke thought processes, but actively calls readers into participating in the unfolding events pictured by the text, hereby joining in actions that seek to establish the kingdom of God as envisioned through the words of Jesus. Reading and interpreting the parables as language-games renders these stories accessible to questions of faith that could not be asked previously: Why does a man without wedding garment face expulsion from the banquet? Why are wise virgins rewarded by not sharing their oil? Why is anxiety and caution severely punished and financial risk taking awarded? Understanding Jesus’ parables as pictures of a world reigned by God, yet in need of redemption and our collaboration will remove these texts from the pedestal of enigma and obscurity, placing them into the hands of the faithful reader.

Download or read book The Parables of Jesus written by Paul Winton Saunders and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-10-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parables of Jesus examines Jewish customs during biblical times to reveal lessons on life, living, and walking with the Lord. You’ll encounter the figures that Jesus used in his stories: the unjust judge who neither feared God or man, the self-righteous Pharisee and the humble publican in the temple, the fickle children in the marketplace, the unforgiving servant, and others exhibiting traits as compassion, jealousy, and greed. Pastor Paul Saunders makes the point that Jesus was appalled with the hypocritical nature of Jewish religious leadership. They made a great show of righteousness, but their behavior was corrupt—and Jesus was not afraid to call it out. The parables are brilliant, relevant, pithy, and personally challenging. Jesus uses everyday activities, with which we are all familiar, to illustrate a deeper truth. Although numerous scholars have written about the parables of Jesus, this book takes a fresh approach, looking at them in context and exploring the relevance they have today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible’s greatest value is its doctrinal and prophetic message: the Old Testament’s foretelling of a coming Messiah, and the New Testament’s fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy – the literal coming of Christ, the Son of God, and what bearing His life’s work has upon the human race. We must not overlook the Bible’s peculiar doctrinal stance in world history … and we should “thank the Jews” for that “Book of books,” which is the Bible. But where does the Bible stand in literary terms? Surely we must not overlook the Bible’s peculiar literary stance in world history. The Bible, with its prophetic imagery, poetic praises, and parabolic analogy is one of the world’s greatest literary works. Perhaps none of its writings show this more than does the Psalms, Proverbs, and parables. —From the Introduction With an insightful introduction on the literary gems of the Psalms, Proverbs and parables, this compilation is a fine contribution to any religious or inspirational library, sure to inspire a more careful and serious reading of one of the world’s greatest texts—the Holy Bible.
