Book Crushed but Not Broken

Download or read book Crushed but Not Broken written by Melissa Bosch and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crushed, But Not Broken is about unyielding faith, determination, and a desire for truth. After breaking her arm playing on the monkey bars, Emmy began behaving strangely over the next three months. Not fully understanding what was happening, Missy continued to homeschool her four kids and take them out, including to the local pool in Smithfield, Virginia. What started as one of those normal days at the pool, however, ended with Emmy on a ventilator. Ten days and dozens of tests later, she woke up from a medically induced coma—physically disabled and with an inflamed brain. Emmy’s doctors put her through multiple medical procedures, some almost killing her. As Emmy’s brain continued to deteriorate, her parents finally got the doctors in Virginia to send her to Boston Children’s Hospital to search for a diagnosis and cure. Despite all the hardships—as well as the hardships yet to come—it was the promise of God’s goodness that kept Missy seeking answers to get the help and healing her daughter needed.

Book Ask a Manager

Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have always been known in school and in colleges and in the medical field and every town. Why? I talked a lot and wanted to ask why for everything, or I wanted to know why. The two weeks I spent in grade 1, my teacher told me over and over that if I ask her one more time why, she would jump out the window. I was always an honor student, and I believed one should ask if you didn't know. For some reason, I was transferred to the second grade because I was bored. I didn't worry. I changed my mind, and though schooling was going to be a piece of cake, I think I woke up in the seventh grade. From that grade, I had to study, but I enjoyed it. I never thought I'd become a writer, but today it is good therapy for so many outlets, and I thank my mom for this. When I talked too much, I had to sit in the corner with a pen and a piece of paper. I learned to write, draw, and write poems. My life was to become a nurse or doctor and work for the poor and study criminal justice. Here I am today, writing only true events. Suck It Up, Buttercup, my second book, was hard to write because I had much respect for the medical field, but I realize that all fields of interest had hush-hush things, so my true love became nursing. All the roses I received during my life with others has been a blessing from God. If you care to become a nurse, take God's hand, and he will carry you to others with love. You have to be devoted. Don't enter the medical field for a paycheck, enter it because you love others and want to make a difference in this world, and you will be blessed. Don't ever be harsh or unruly to your patient.

  • Author : Travis Rieder

Download or read book In Pain written by Travis Rieder and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NPR Best Book of 2019 A bioethicist’s eloquent and riveting memoir of opioid dependence and withdrawal—a harrowing personal reckoning and clarion call for change not only for government but medicine itself, revealing the lack of crucial resources and structures to handle this insidious nationwide epidemic. Travis Rieder’s terrifying journey down the rabbit hole of opioid dependence began with a motorcycle accident in 2015. Enduring half a dozen surgeries, the drugs he received were both miraculous and essential to his recovery. But his most profound suffering came several months later when he went into acute opioid withdrawal while following his physician’s orders. Over the course of four excruciating weeks, Rieder learned what it means to be “dope sick”—the physical and mental agony caused by opioid dependence. Clueless how to manage his opioid taper, Travis’s doctors suggested he go back on the drugs and try again later. Yet returning to pills out of fear of withdrawal is one route to full-blown addiction. Instead, Rieder continued the painful process of weaning himself. Rieder’s experience exposes a dark secret of American pain management: a healthcare system so conflicted about opioids, and so inept at managing them, that the crisis currently facing us is both unsurprising and inevitable. As he recounts his story, Rieder provides a fascinating look at the history of these drugs first invented in the 1800s, changing attitudes about pain management over the following decades, and the implementation of the pain scale at the beginning of the twenty-first century. He explores both the science of addiction and the systemic and cultural barriers we must overcome if we are to address the problem effectively in the contemporary American healthcare system. In Pain is not only a gripping personal account of dependence, but a groundbreaking exploration of the intractable causes of America’s opioid problem and their implications for resolving the crisis. Rieder makes clear that the opioid crisis exists against a backdrop of real, debilitating pain—and that anyone can fall victim to this epidemic.
