Book Sports Afield s Deer Hunter s Almanac

Download or read book Sports Afield s Deer Hunter s Almanac written by Sid Evans and published by Atlantic Monthly Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: "There is not a successful deer hunter in the world who has not come up with his own peculiar methods -- some of them secret, some not -- for beating the long odds of killing a deer. The Ojibwa Indians of the Great Lakes figured out they could attract deer by smoking wild aster in a pipe, the smell of which was like the scent of a deer's hooves. Other tribes -- such as the Choctaws and Cherokees in the Southeast -- would carry skinned-out deer heads on their belts, which they could wear over their heads whenever they needed to make a stalk (this is no longer an advisable, or legal, technique). They used decoys and calls, and they knew that banging a pair of antlers together could summon a buck during the rut. In this book we have tried to compile some of the best information and most interesting pieces written about deer in Sports Afield since the magazine was founded in 1887. There were not as many deer to hunt back then, but over the last quarter century deer populations have boomed in nearly every state but Alaska and Hawaii, and so have the articles written about them. Many of these pieces originally appeared in the Sports Afield Almanac, which was introduced by Editor Ted Kesting in 1972; others appeared as departments or short features. All told, more than 250 deer hunters contributed, making this, we hope, a very unique look at what is now America's favorite game animal. Some of the contributors-like Dwight Schuh and Peter Fiduccia, Tom McIntyre and Ted Kerasote-are what we would call pros. They have hunted, studied and written about deer all their lives. Others are just guys who wanted to share a couple of their best deer-hunting secrets. Do not be surprised if you turn up some contradictory views. There's more than one way to shoot, skin, and cook a deer; but it may be that the best way of all is the one you have to figure out on your own." "This is the finest book on whitetail hunting that I have seen." -- Larry Myhre, Sioux City Journal

I started hunting forty two years ago and been there and done that. The stories in this book will help you in many ways, because there is a little bit about all the aspects of hunting deer. Most of these stories are about my mistakes and not of my good hunts that I went on, only to show you some of the stuff I did when very green.I could have added many more deer hunting stories, but thought that the ones I did add would be beneficial for there are many lessons to be learned. Everyone is different in every thing we do as individuals. The stories here are just to show the mistakes I made and the things I learned during my hunting trips, over a period of 20 plus years.I had many successful hunting trips, but wanted to tell the stories of most of my mistakes. I hope in some way, the reader can take some of my tips in this book to be a much better hunter, or at least, if you're a knew hunter, to learn the ropes much quicker then I did. Lots of luck on your next hunt.

Book The American Deer Hunter

Download or read book The American Deer Hunter written by Francis E. Sell and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Deer Hunter is the result of a great amount of experience in hunting with an extraordinary degree of success. The content represents the determination to set down the hard facts and the effective equipment and means for stalking and shooting the white-tail and his cousins. The book is highly original in its presentation. It is in no sense a rehash of previous discussions or formulae. The author deals at all times with actual problems of locating, maneuvering, and shooting and with the guns employed. The discussions are based on circumstances of reality in the relationships of deer, environment, hunter and gun, not on preconceived or synthetic situations. Here are interesting and important data on deer habits and on speeds and gaits. Here also is an extensive treatment of selection and care of weapons for deer hunting; the killing and dressing of game; and even on clothing for the deer hunter. All told, it has a wealth of material useful to both the veteran hunter and the novice.

Book Tales of Whitetails

Download or read book Tales of Whitetails written by Archibald Rutledge and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-five stirring, contemplative stories of deer hunting from a winner of the John Burroughs Medal. Archibald Rutledge—renowned outdoor writer, poet laureate, and authority on whitetails—lived a rich life at Hampton Plantation in South Carolina, and had a mystical attachment to deer that found fulfillment in hunting and writing. No American sporting writer has been more persuasive in capturing the myriad, and often elusive, meanings of the hunt. According to editor Jim Casada, Rutledge has an unrivaled knack for capturing the thrill of the chase, and his ability to set a scene is such that it places the reader squarely amidst the deep swamps, ridges of mixed pines and hardwoods, and dense thickets of palmetto and greenbrier. Rutledge considered deer, “that noble, elusive, crafty, wonderful denizen of the wilds,” to be the wisest of the game animals. His firm belief was that there was “much more to hunting than hunting.” He praised whitetails in poetry, found in them a basis for a sophisticated philosophy, and, most of all, immortalized the world of the hunter and the hunted in prose. Tales of Whitetails is the only book ever published devoted exclusively to Rutledge’s deer tales.

Book Whitetail Widow

Download or read book Whitetail Widow written by Woody Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As great writing lays bare the author's soul, "Whitetail Widow" bears the heart and soul of deer hunters, forbidden areas even to the women they love. The hunter's code of silence demands protection of his emotions and the location of his favorite deer stand with equal secrecy. The quest is to understand the mystical male bonding ritual that has captured the hearts and minds of hunters for generations. Deer Hunter Syndrome explains the compulsive behavior of an avid deer hunter when the hunt for white-tailed deer becomes the priority of his life. The Hunter and The Law investigates the intense rivalry between hunters and game wardens, a sport within a sport. Deer hunting is by far the most regulated sport in the world with a confounding maze of laws, regulations, and ordinances. Coping with Deer Hunter Syndrome offers different strategies to survive (and hopefully share) a lifetime of deer seasons. One size does not fit every hunter. A successful strategy employed by another may fail miserably with your husband. White-tailed Deer Management unravels many of the mysteries (and rumors) surrounding deer management. A foundation of knowledge is provided to allow engagement on the provocative issues of the day, including carrying capacity, maximum sustained yield, and antler restrictions. The deer managers are often between the well-known rock and a hard place. The best outcome usually leaves everybody a little angry. As only one in three hunters harvest a deer in a particular year, the odds are stacked against the deer manager. Even success does not guarantee satisfaction with management policies. Most hunters are inclined to attribute success to the skill of the hunter while failure is ascribed to the lack of deer, a bittersweet outcome for a deer manager. Avid deer hunters may also benefit from a fresh prospective. The hunting concepts and techniques presented are particularly helpful for young hunters. With unrelenting hope, the authors capture the true love for the joys of life, family struggles, successes, failures, and the life experiences of a deer hunter - and resolves the mystery of whether deer hunting is really better than sex.

Book Whitetail Nation

Download or read book Whitetail Nation written by Pete Bodo and published by HMH. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dedicated deer hunter “writes with humor and insight” about his adventures—and misadventures—in the wild (Orlando Sentinel). Every autumn, millions of men and women across the country don their camo, stock up on doe urine, and undertake a quintessential American tradition—deer hunting. The pinnacle of a hunter’s quest is killing a buck with antlers that “score” highly enough to qualify for the Boone and Crockett record book. But in all his seasons on the trail, Pete Bodo, an avid outdoorsman and student of the hunt, had never reached that milestone. Sadly, he had to admit it: He was a nimrod. Whitetail Nation is the uproarious story of the season Pete Bodo set out to kill the big buck. From the rolling hills of upstate New York to the vast and unforgiving land of the Big Sky to the Texas ranches that feature high fences, deer feeders, and money-back guarantees, Bodo traverses deep into the heart of a lively, growing subculture that draws powerfully on durable American values: the love of the frontier, the importance of self-reliance, the camaraderie of men in adventure, the quest for sustained youth, and yes, the capitalist’s right to amass every high tech hunting gadget this industry’s exploding commerce has to offer. Gradually, Bodo closes in on his target—that elusive monster buck—and with each day spent perched in a deer stand or crawling stealthily in high grass (praying the rattlesnakes are gone), or shivering through the night in a drafty cabin (flannel, polar fleece, and whiskey be damned), readers are treated to an unforgettable tour through a landscape that ranges from the exalted to the absurd. Along the way Bodo deftly captures the spirit and passion of this rich American pursuit, tracing its history back to the days of Lewis and Clark and examining that age old question: “Why do men hunt?”
