Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real Strength Is In The Mind And Not The Fist You seem to have forgotten who you are here. This is my house. This is not your room, it is mine. When I want you to do something, you will do it. How quickly relationships can build you up and then, like a swift hurricane, tear you down and apart blinding you with helplessness. What began as an over seas journey to teach at a school in Haiti with her new found love Raffy, becomes an unexpected storm of the misunderstood and misaddressed throws of abuse and violence. In a country where she has no family or friends except for the children she hopes to inspire and protect, Miss Dana finds her life in danger and her entire reality blown apart within the bile of the exploitation and domination of herself and those she cares most for from communities, institutions and even her lover, Raffy. How can she both protect herself and stay with the children she has fallen so in love with? Through suspense and emotional uprise, Taylor Johnson pulls the reader into a world seldom understood by outsiders and those unwilling to open their eyes to oppression and violence. A story of empowerment and hope, The Awakening Of Miss Dana brings a dark truth about the exploitation, and physical and psychological abuse that occurs within families, institutions and entire communities, into the light. ~ Opeyemi Agbaje, CEO and Executive Director of OROL (Our Right, Our Life) initiative empowering the young with knowledge of sexual and reproductive health, rights, education and gender equality.

Book Almost There

Download or read book Almost There written by Curtis Gillespie and published by Dundurn.com. This book was released on 2012-04-16 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have memories of family vacations: the cross-country marathon drive, the camping trip, a couple lazy weeks at the lake, a helter-skelter month in Europe, four days in Disneyland. The variations may be endless, but the common denominator is that there are always stories to tell. The family vacation, with all its funny, sad, relaxing, stressful, frustrating, and exhilarating moments, shapes us, and helps us create an understanding of who we are and of those we travel with. In his humourous new book, Almost There, award-winning writer Curtis Gillespie explores the meaning of our family vacations, the memories created by them, and how we use these memories to define our relationship with our families and ourselves. Using his own history of family vacations as a backdrop, Gillespie explores how the meaning and symbolism of the family vacation has shifted throughout the decades. For years, families drove across the country or relaxed at a lakeside cottage. Now even the middle-class travel with their nannies or go on a Disney cruise ... or take their nannies with them on a Disney cruise. As he sifts through memories and explores family vacation history, Gillespie ultimately discovers that not only is how we choose to vacation an expression of who we are as individual families, but that the very nature of the family vacation reflects, and sometimes even predicts, societal change. The family vacation is something we all share; the laughter, the tears, the moments, the memories. In Almost There, Curtis Gillespie reminds us how important these moments in our lives are, and how important they will continue to be.

Book State Failure Underdevelopment and Foreign Intervention in Haiti

Download or read book State Failure Underdevelopment and Foreign Intervention in Haiti written by Jean-Germain Gros and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failed states are a huge problem in international relations, threatening world order in a number of ways. Conflicts in failed states often spill unto neighbouring states, failed states make for unreliable partners in the resolution of global social problems such as poverty and AIDS, and failed states magnify the effects of natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. In response to the multiple threats posed by failed states, working states, sometimes acting alone sometimes in concert with others, have undertaken military operations, often under the rubric of humanitarian intervention. This book is a historical study of state failure, underdevelopment and foreign intervention in light of the Haitian experience with all three. Its main thesis is that state failure has been a recurring feature of Haitian political life for much of the country’s history, and this inability of the Haitians to craft a viable political order is at the heart of Haitian poverty and underdevelopment. Haitian state-making failure is underwritten by a complex array of deleterious local and external institutions, as well as natural constraints, including class, lack of elite cohesion, geography, population growth, the social origins of the Haitian polity, imperialism, and technology.

Book Why Did God Seat Me Next to the Toilet

Download or read book Why Did God Seat Me Next to the Toilet written by Frank J. Nice and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our God is a God who is in total control of all that happens to the whole world and to each of us individually. God can allow or prevent bad things from happening. Of course, most of us desire that God would prevent bad things from happening. When we are seated next to the toilet on an airplane, we pretty much assume that God could care less whether we are seated next to the toilet or are seated in first class. Yet God controls every single action that occurs in the world, or He would not be God. When we are seated next to the toilet of life, we discover, as Job did, that God allowed this to happen for all things to work together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. God's plan for us, who trust in Him, are to prosper us and not to harm us but to give us hope and a future. The purpose of this book is to show that no matter how bad the evil and sin that confront us, God is in total control, and His words of promise to us will be fulfilled. On this earth, you may lose all that you have: family; friends, wealth, health, possessions, dignity, and told to curse God and die, as Job was. Through God's grace and mercy, you can endure as Job endured. Do not think that Job endured only because God knew him as a "blessed man who lives righteously." You and I are most certainly not of the character of Job, but God has seated us next to the same toilet of life where Job was seated. Because God is always nearby during our trials (He told Job that), we will discover God's specific plan for us when He does seat us next to the toilet, whether it be on the plane or on the earth.

Book Broken Planet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sharon Dirckx
  • Publisher : Inter-Varsity Press
  • Release : 2023-02-16
  • ISBN : 1789740932
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Broken Planet written by Sharon Dirckx and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2023-02-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Broken Planet, Dr Sharon Dirckx, scientist and apologist, offers a measured and thoughtful case for how there could be a God of love that allows natural disasters. The question of suffering is one of the greatest hurdles to Christian faith. When believers respond to the question of why there is suffering in the world, they often turn to the free-will defence. This states that humans make choices for good or ill that can bring about suffering in the lives of others. However, that doesn't explain why children die of cancer, or why the latest earthquakes, tsunamis or pandemics have been so destructive. These seem to happen not because of our choices, but in spite of them. So how do we make sense of these events? Dr. Sharon Dirckx blends argument, science and first-person narrative in this unique book, weaving answers to real questions with compassion and empathy, while also acknowledging the element of mystery we will always live with while on earth. Dr Dirckx addresses topics such as: If God exists, why would he make a world with earthquakes and tsunamis? Why is there so much suffering in a natural disaster? Are natural disasters God's judgement? Is my illness a punishment from God? What kind of God would allow natural disasters and diseases? If you have ever struggled to reconcile the idea of a loving God with all the pain in our world, this book will encourage you that belief in such a God is not as unreasonable as it may seem. In fact, it may be where God is revealed most profoundly.
