Book Where Night Is Day

Download or read book Where Night Is Day written by James Kelly and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is no night in the ICU. There is day, lesser day, then day again. There are rhythms. Every twelve hours: shift change. Report: first all together in the big room, then at the bedside, nurse to nurse. Morning rounds. A group of doctors moves slowly through the unit like a harrow through a field. At each room, like a game, a different one rotates into the center. They leave behind a trail of new orders. Wean, extubate, titrate, start this, stop that, scan, film, scope. The steep hill the patient is asked to climb. Can you breathe on your own? Can you wake up? Can you live?"—Where Night Is Day Where Night Is Day is a nonfiction narrative grounded in the day-by-day, hour-by-hour rhythms of an ICU in a teaching hospital in the heart of New Mexico. It takes place over a thirteen-week period, the time of the average rotation of residents through the ICU. It begins in September and ends at Christmas. It is the story of patients and families, suddenly faced with critical illness, who find themselves in the ICU. It describes how they navigate through it and find their way. James Kelly is a sensitive witness to the quiet courage and resourcefulness of ordinary people. Kelly leads the reader into a parallel world: the world of illness. This world, invisible but not hidden, not articulated by but known by the ill, does not readily offer itself to our understanding. In this context, Kelly reflects on the nature of medicine and nursing, on how doctors and nurses see themselves and how they see each other. Drawing on the words of medical historians, doctor-writers, and nursing scholars, Kelly examines the relationship of professional and lay observers to the meaning of illness, empathy, caring, and the silence of suffering. Kelly offers up an intimate portrait of the ICU and its inhabitants.

Download or read book The Art of the Peeve written by Bruce H. Weik and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of the Peeve has been in the making for twenty years. For sixteen of those years, they appeared as a column in The Zephyr, a paper located in Galesburg, Illinois. The last four years, they have appeared in the blog site thepeever.com. These are the best of the thousands that were written. The book lists the peeves as they appeared each year over that twenty-year span. In addition, each year starts off with a creative nonfiction story that is primarily memoir, personal, meditative, or lyrical. The peeves cover a lot of territory. They are provocative, stimulating, and full of spiritual, psychological, and political commentary using satire, humor, and often laced with a good bit of baloney. They are designed to encourage discussion and challenge the belief system most of us inherit from our parents. They are not meant to demean any person, although at times the author skirts right on the edge of making fun of a particular person. Sorry, but the whole purpose is to peeve you. A lot of the peeves express feelings about things that many people have a hard time talking about. The author has no such problems. Straightforward, unapologetic, and with no remorse, the peeves drive home the other side of most stories. This is not a book for those favoring the status quo or for the faint of heart.

Book excerpt: A Texas Ranger teams up with a beautiful DEA agent deal to take down a deadly drug lord in this romantic suspense novella by a New York Times bestseller. Out of danger and . . . into his arms Undercover DEA agent Kelly Sloan was tasked with taking down Mexican druglord Dominic Ortega, but when her cover was blown, she barely escaped with her life. After being taken out on his yacht and tortured for information, she literally leapt at the chance to escape overboard, figuring death at sea was better than death at the hands of her vicious captor. But fate had something other than death in mind for her. Texas Ranger Quinn McCord was dealing with problems of his own, so the last thing he needed was a gorgeous, nearly naked woman with a shady past. And before the unconscious beauty on the beach even came to, he knew she was either trouble or in trouble—maybe both—because the men patrolling the shallows with a speedboat and binoculars weren’t tourists out for a day’s fishing. His finely honed instincts told him that she was their quarry, and that he had to protect her and find out what was really going on. If Kelly was shocked to find herself waking up in the arms of a handsome stranger, Quinn was no less surprised to discover that his damsel-in-distress was a very capable agent who’d quite possibly killed the infamous Dominic Ortega before getting away. Unfortunately for them both, Ortega hadn’t died. Instead he’d put a two-million-dollar bounty on her head and sent his army of killers-for-hire in pursuit. Now Kelly and Quinn are both the pursued and the pursuers as they try to stay alive long enough for Kelly to testify against Ortega—and for the two of them to follow up on the once-in-a-lifetime attraction neither one of them wants to fight. Book Critical Care

Download or read book Critical Care written by Theresa Brown and published by HarperOne. This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Doctors heal, or try to, but as nurses we step into the breach, figure out what needs to be done for any given patient today, on this shift, and then, with love and exasperation, do it as best as we can."—from Critical Care "At my job, people die," writes Theresa Brown, capturing both the burden and the singular importance of her profession. Brown, a former English professor at Tufts University, chronicles here her first year as an R.N. in medical oncology. As she does so, Brown illuminates the unique role of nurses in health care, giving us a deeply moving portrait of the day-to-day work nurses do: caring for the person who is ill, not just the illness itself. Critical Care takes us with Brown as she struggles to tend to her patients' needs, both physical (the rigors of chemotherapy) and emotional (their late-night fears). Along the way, we see the work nurses do to fight for their patients' dignity, in spite of punishing treatments and an often uncaring hospital bureaucracy. We also see how a twelve-hour day of caring for the seriously ill gives Brown herself a deeper appreciation of what it means to be alive. Ultimately, this is a book about embracing life, whether in times of sickness or health. As she takes us into the place where patients and nurses meet, Brown shows us the power of human connection in the face of mortality. She does so with a keen sense of humor and remarkable powers of observation, making Critical Care a powerful contribution to the literature of medicine.

We have partners, we don’t have partners. We’re an eclectic bunch. In this collection of essays gathered from seven years of commissioning, AoAers share their thoughts on life, love, sex, death, adventures on their terms, lockdown and everything in between. ‘We hope we’re doing our bit to re-define and re-frame what getting old means.’
