Download or read book I M Pei written by Carter Wiseman and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2001 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1990, I. M. Pei: A Profile in American Architecture was published as the first full-length study of the life and work of this extraordinary artist. The revised edition includes a chapter on Pei's work since 1990, when he established a new relationship with his firm that enabled him to pursue more small scale, personal commissions. Illustrated from the rich archives of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, the book charts Pei's progress from his birth in China in 1917 through every milestone in his career to his preeminent position today. The author, noted architecture critic Carter Wiseman, has supplemented extensive and meticulous research with many hours of conversation with Pei, his family, his associates, and his clients. Wiseman focuses his text on the buildings of special relevance to Pei's career, and, whether discussing the Kennedy Library, the Meyerson Symphony Center, or the Louvre, he carefully considers the project's architectural, sociological, and personal dimensions. One sees how Pei's artistic vision has emerged, how he has deftly met the demands of each new situation and client, and how his charismatic personality has affected events." "Scores of color photographs present Pei's buildings in all their splendid variety - from the urban grandeur of the Dallas City Hall to the daring innovation of the Bank of China skyscraper. Dozens of revealing drawings, plans, and models as well as personal and documentary photographs make this volume the only comprehensive visual record of Pei's work."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: When I. M. Pei was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1983, the jury said he had "given this century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms." I. M. Pei: Complete Works, the first and definitive survey of the master architect, attests to this statement by showcasing Pei’s transcendent, sculptural forms in over fifty projects and more than 300 illustrations, culminating in the last works he is currently completing. Often working in a spare geometry with a palette of stone, concrete, glass, and steel, Pei—who began his career pioneering public housing projects in New York City—has taken his vision of modern architecture across the globe with commissions in locations as diverse as Quatar, China, Luxembourg, Japan, and Germany. Meanwhile, major projects such as the JFK Library in Boston and the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., have made him a household name in the United States.
Download or read book Henry N Cobb Words Works 1948 2018 written by HENRY N. COBB and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book dedicated to the career of the preeminent American architect, Henry N. Cobb. As a builder, teacher, and mentor, Henry N. Cobb has been one of the most eloquent voices in architecture for well over half a century. A founding partner of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, where he has worked actively and continuously since its inception in 1955, his practice encompasses a wide variety of building types, with projects across the world that resound in the public imagination. Cobb's sensitivity to place and use generate surprising and unparalleled forms in educational and civic buildings--such as the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, the John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse in Boston, and Palazzo Lombardia in Milan--or in corporate and commercial projects, such as the John Hancock Tower in Boston, Fountain Place Tower in Dallas, Tour EDF at La Défense in Paris, and Four Seasons Hotel and Residences at One Dalton, now under construction in Boston. Henry N. Cobb: Words & Works 1948-2018 is his first book, uniquely combining poetic analyses of his distinguished works with essays and lectures that cover topics about architecture's past, present, and future. His voice is complemented by interviews and discussions with Michael Graves, Robert A.M. Stern, Hal Foster, Charles Gwathmey, Paolo Conrad Bercah, Cynthia Davidson, Peter Eisenman, Mark Pasnik, and John Hejduk. Handsomely designed by OverUnder, this book is packaged in a portable size evocative of the Library of America series. A longtime educator--and chair of the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1980 to 1985--Cobb takes up his extensive subject matter in a thoughtful and engaging manner. To anyone interested in the development of American architecture in its transition from modernism to postmodernism and into the era of high-tech starchitecture, there are a number of treasures here to discover. Henry N. Cobb is a landmark survey--in words and works--of one of the great architects of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The firm of Denis Valode and Jean Pistre, which has been practicing for 25 years, entered upon a new phase of its career in 1992, when the architects — in cooperation with the landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson — received the Equerre d’argent prize of the journal Le Moniteur for the L’Oréal corporate headquarters outside Paris. Their predominantly large-scale projects are distinguished by their high degree of diversity. For some years, Valode & Pistre have not only been practicing in France, their native country, but also maintain offices in Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, Mexico, China, and elsewhere. This book contains detailed presentations of 18 projects by Valode & Pistre, with documentation focusing on the specific working and design methods of the architects. Projects presented include the Renault Technocentre in Guyancourt, France; the Las Mercedes business park in Madrid, Spain; a group of office and hotel towers in Beijing, China; and the Hyatt Hotel in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph by New York–based architecture and interior design firm Janson Goldstein. Janson Goldstein’s diverse practice ranges from artisan-crafted custom furnishings, to highly personalized homes and apartments, to large-scale urban retail, hospitality, and condominium projects. The firm’s founding principles were to bring the disciplines of architecture and interior design together under one roof, and to embrace a diversity of project typologies. The result is a richness of unique ideas, from conceptual development through to the materiality of the executed work, that is evident in every project. With this richly photographed monograph, we illustrate how these principles have been implemented in more than 400 projects world-wide.

Download or read book Heroic written by Mark Pasnik and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often problematically labeled as “Brutalist” architecture, the concrete buildings that transformed Boston during 1960s and 1970s were conceived with progressive-minded intentions by some of the world’s most influential designers, including Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, I. M. Pei, Henry Cobb, Araldo Cossutta, Gerhard Kallmann and Michael McKinnell, Paul Rudolph, Josep Lluís Sert, and The Architects Collaborative. As a worldwide phenomenon, building with concrete represents one of the major architectural movements of the postwar years, but in Boston it was deployed in more numerous and diverse civic, cultural, and academic projects than in any other major U.S. city. After decades of stagnation and corrupt leadership, public investment in Boston in the 1960s catalyzed enormous growth, resulting in a generation of bold buildings that shared a vocabulary of concrete modernism. The period from the 1960 arrival of Edward J. Logue as the powerful and often controversial director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority to the reopening of Quincy Market in 1976 saw Boston as an urban laboratory for the exploration of concrete’s structural and sculptural qualities. What emerged was a vision for the city’s widespread revitalization often referred to as the “New Boston.” Today, when concrete buildings across the nation are in danger of insensitive renovation or demolition, Heroic presents the concrete structures that defined Boston during this remarkable period—from the well-known (Boston City Hall, New England Aquarium, and cornerstones of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University) to the already lost (Mary Otis Stevens and Thomas F. McNulty’s concrete Lincoln House and Studio; Sert, Jackson & Associates’ Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School)—with hundreds of images; essays by architectural historians Joan Ockman, Lizabeth Cohen, Keith N. Morgan, and Douglass Shand-Tucci; and interviews with a number of the architects themselves. The product of 8 years of research and advocacy, Heroic surveys the intentions and aspirations of this period and considers anew its legacies—both troubled and inspired.
