Book excerpt: In the early months of the Spanish Civil War, Canadian-American archaeologist Dr. Grace “Shale” Clifden and her inexperienced field crew of well-met Canadians—Dorothy Livesay, P. K. Page, and Sheila Doherty—are documenting a rare discovery of prehistoric cave art in Galicia when they are kidnapped. A local Spanish commander, a Nationalists, loyal to Franco and the Fascists, believes they are foreign spies and takes them to his ancestral home, locking them in underground cells. There, he enlists his brother, Dr. Alexandre Castro, a psychology professor at the University of Madrid, to interrogate the women, but instead, he secretly forms a bond with them. Unlike the commander, Alexandre is a loyalist, supporting the Republicans, nevertheless, he is eager to escape the clutches of the State Intelligence Service—who plan to force him to devise forms of psychological torture. Alexandre convinces his brother to let him chaperone the women while they finish their research, as the Smithsonian will pay the commander a hefty sum for it. After Shale and the women have compiled their findings, Alexandre helps them escape Spain to London with him. But while in London, they learn of other Canadians who have bravely volunteered to help fight for democracy in Spain despite the dangers, and now, they, too, want to help the cause. Knowing the war is escalating, Alexandre, Shale and the women are determined to rescue archives and artifacts from the University of Madrid and help the National Junta for Protection of Artistic Treasure transfer Spain’s great art collection to Geneva. As they do so, they must be braver than ever, as the devastating Battle of Madrid is upon them.

Book The Italian American Heritage

Download or read book The Italian American Heritage written by Pellegrino A D'Acierno and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-12 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. The many available scholarly works on Italian-Americans are perhaps of little practical help to the undergraduate or high school student who needs background information when reading contemporary fiction with Italian characters, watching films that require a familiarity with Italian Americans, or looking at works of art that can be fully appreciated only if one understands Italian culture. This basic reference work for non-specialists and students offers quick insights and essential, easy-to-grasp information on Italian-American contributions to American art, music, literature, motion pictures and cultural life. This rich legacy is examined in a collection of original essays that include portrayals of Italian characters in the films of Francis Coppola, Italian American poetry, the art of Frank Stella, the music of Frank Zappa, a survey of Italian folk customs and an analysis of the evolution of Italian-American biography. Comprising 22 lengthy essays written specifically for this volume, the book identifies what is uniquely Italian in American life and examines how Italian customs, traditions, social mores and cultural antecedents have wrought their influence on the American character. Filled with insights, observations and ethnic facts and fictions, this volume should prove to be a valuable source of information for scholars, researchers and students interested in pinpointing and examining the cultural, intellectual and social influence of Italian immigrants and their successors.

Starting with the early days in New York circa 1833, this fabled story comes to life in the long-awaited revision of the seminal Martin History book. Originally published in 1975, this new edition is completely updated and re-designed by well-known industry experts. Part of a two-book set, The History: Book 1 covers the people, the places, and the stories of an American icon. Richly illustrated, this bookcovers the story right up to the fifth-generation president Chris Martin IV. Because the original and revision authors had complete access to authorized archives, this version is the most accurate and detailed reference on the topic. Download or read book Show Tunes written by Steven Suskin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-09 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Show Tunes fully chronicles the shows, songs, and careers of the major composers of the American musical theatre, from Jerome Kern's earliest interpolations to the latest hits on Broadway. Legendary composers like Gershwin, Rodgers, Porter, Berlin, Bernstein, and Sondheim have been joined by more recent songwriters like Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Flaherty, Michael John LaChiusa, and Adam Guettel. This majestic reference book covers their work, their innovations, their successes, and their failures. Show Tunes is simply the most comprehensive volume of its kind ever produced, and this newly revised and updated edition discusses almost 1,000 shows and 9,000 show tunes. The book has been called "a concise skeleton key to the Broadway musical" (Variety) and "a ground-breaking reference work with a difference" (Show Music)-or, as the Washington Post observed, "It makes you sing and dance all over your memory." The eagerly anticipated Fourth Edition, updated through May, 2009, features the entire theatrical output of forty of Broadway's leading composers, in addition to a wide selection of work by other songwriters. The listings include essential production data and statistics, the most extensive information available on published and recorded songs, and lively commentary on the shows, songs, and diverse careers. Based on meticulous research, the book also uncovers dozens of lost musicals-including shows that either closed out of town or were never headed for Broadway-and catalogs hundreds of previously unknown songs, including a number of musical gems that have been misplaced, cut, or forgotten. Informative, insightful, and provocative, Show Tunes is an essential guide for anyone interested in the American musical.
