Book Forward

Download or read book Forward written by Abby Wambach and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Lucid and wrenching...Forward puts [Wambach's] achievement in context with painful and beautiful candor." —NPR "Forward is the powerful story of an athlete who has inspired girls all over the world to believe in themselves." —Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, New York Times Bestselling author of Lean In “This is the best memoir I’ve read by an athlete since Andre Agassi’s Open.” —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take Abby Wambach has always pushed the limits of what is possible. At age seven she was put on the boys’ soccer team. At age thirty-five she would become the highest goal scorer—male or female—in the history of soccer, capturing the nation’s heart with her team’s 2015 World Cup Championship. Called an inspiration and “badass” by President Obama, Abby has become a fierce advocate for women’s rights and equal opportunity, pushing to translate the success of her team to the real world. As she reveals in this searching memoir, Abby’s professional success often masked her inner struggle to reconcile the various parts of herself: ferocious competitor, daughter, leader, wife. With stunning candor, Abby shares her inspiring and often brutal journey from girl in Rochester, New York, to world-class athlete. Far more than a sports memoir, Forward is gripping tale of resilience and redemption—and a reminder that heroism is, above all, about embracing life’s challenges with fearlessness and heart.

Book The Ugly Wife Is a Treasure at Home

Download or read book The Ugly Wife Is a Treasure at Home written by Melissa Margaret Schneider and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ugly wife is a treasure at home" is not just an idle expression in China. For centuries, Chinese marriage involved matchmakers, child brides, dowries, and concubines, until the People's Republic of China was established by Mao Zedong and his Communist Party in 1949. Initially encouraging citizens to reject traditional arranged marriages and instead wed for love, the party soon spurned "the sin of putting love first," fearful that romantic love would distract good Communists from selflessly carrying out the State's agenda. Under Mao the party established the power to approve or reject proposed marriages, dictate where couples would live, and even determine if spouses would live together. By the 1960s and 1970s romantic love became a counterrevolutionary act punishable by "struggle sessions" or even imprisonment. The importance of Chinese sons, however, did not wane during Mao's thirty-year regime. As such, in a world where nobody spoke of love, 99 percent of young women still married. The Ugly Wife Is a Treasure at Home draws the reader into the world of love in Communist China through the personal memories of those who endured the Cultural Revolution and the generations that followed. This collection of intimate and remarkable stories gives readers a rare view of Chinese history, social customs, and Communism from the perspective of today's ordinary citizens.

Book Mari n Hossa

Download or read book Mari n Hossa written by Marian Hossa and published by Triumph Books. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Stanley Cup champion and modern legend of the game, in his own words MariÁn Hossa's life is a lesson in the value of determination and perseverance. Born into a hockey family that included his father, a former player and coach of the Slovakian national team, MariÁn and his brother, Marcel, quickly fell in love with the sport. Before long, they began to display the level of skill that could lead to a professional career. But the odds of reaching the NHL from Tren&čÍn, a town of 50,000 people nestled among the mountains of Slovakia, remained long. Determined to follow their dreams, the Hossas persevered and were each eventually drafted in the first round. After some outstanding years in Ottawa and Atlanta, MariÁn moved on to Pittsburgh in 2008, where he helped lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup Final against Detroit, a series his team lost. Prioritizing winning over dollars, Hossa signed with the Red Wings the following season, where he again reached the Final only to find heartbreak again, improbably against the team he had just left, the Penguins. It seemed that perhaps he would never raise Lord Stanley's Cup above his head. But Hossa persevered, refusing to give in. In 2009, he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks, and played a key role in the team's dynastic run the following decade, winning championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Then, yet another obstacle appeared in his path: an unusual and debilitating skin condition that compelled him to retire years before he'd planned. In this inspiring and entertaining autobiography, Hossa brings readers inside the dressing room, onto the celebratory team plane, and alongside one of hockey's greatest stars as he makes the biggest decisions of his career. Also featuring photos from Hossa's personal collection, this is an essential read for all hockey fans.

Book I Wish He Was Dead

Download or read book I Wish He Was Dead written by Jan Jencomb and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Emma Kay was born almost nine years ago, I have kept pictorial records (both still and video) of her life, growth, and activities. We soon began to lose confidence in our judicial system, especially as it relates to the male spouse in divorce proceedings. The Internet had a site for a local attorney which gave instructions on getting the male spouse out of the housecorner him so he will be forced to touch the female spouse to get past her. She played her cards to the limit after that, signing papers for a restraining order. The separation agreement was already written, but the dates in the agreement were all wrong. My son was set up and trapped. He lost his home businesses and didnt see his daughter for five weeks. The hatred, anger, and emotional abuse she continued to show exceeded any behavior I had ever witnessed. Her emotional abuse to her daughter, and to me, was inconceivable, incomprehensible, and inexcusable. I started keeping written documentation more than six months prior to her actual drama. I started my documentation as a therapeutic value for me. It was much later that I decided to document everything I could in a book. I hope it will be of some help to other unsuspecting husbands.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING ABOUT IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD(R) -- TRANSCENDING BOUNDARIES? HERE ARE A FEW REVIEWS: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ATTORNEYS FOR CHILDRENS RIGHTS J. STEVEN SVOBODA, ESQUIRE RENDERS FAVORABLE VERDICT FOR FATHERHOOD BOOK BERKELEY, CA. 19 September 2004 He is the Executive Director and Founder of Attorneys for the Rights of the Child, a Board Member and Public Relations Director of the National Coalition of Free Men and a member of The Mens Center Advisory Council. Mr. Svoboda had the following things to say about In Search Of Fatherhood -- Transcending Boundaries which is authored by Diane A. Sears, a member of the University Council for Akamai Universitys Fatherhood and Mens Studies Program and the Managing Editor of a quarterly international male parenting journal IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD FORUM FOR AND ABOUT THE FATHERS OF THE WORLD: BSI International, still a relatively new player in pro-male publishing, has been putting out its IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD Forum For and About the Fathers of the World for well over half a decade. Now BSI has released this fascinating and wide-ranging volume collecting 17 pieces by 16 contributors, all focused in one way or other on the ever-important issue of fatherhood. I personally read it cover to cover on a recent plane flight. Svoboda stated. BSIs publicationsboth its journal and this book--have a unique flavor. For one thing, substantial representation is given to men of color. Its authors vary in literary skill though everything it publishes is engaging and easy to follow. Some of its articles tend to have a somewhat politically reactionary flavor though despite my own personal largely progressive background, I dont view this as a negative factor, Svoboda continued. At the same time, BSIs style is very male in its sensibility: stories are put out there as the authors see them, with no apologies and no punches pulled. Many of BS

Book Practical Dreamers

Download or read book Practical Dreamers written by Mike Hoolboom and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2004-04-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The streets are full of admirable craftsmen, but so few practical dreamers.' – Man Ray What if there were movies made the same way as suits, custom fitted, each one tailored for one person? Not broadcast, but narrowcast? Not theatres around the world showing the same globalized pictures, but instead a local circumstance, a movie so particular, so peculiar, it could cure night blindness or vertigo? Welcome to the world of fringe movies, where artists have been busy putting queer shoulders to the wheels, or bending light to talk about First Nations rights (and making it funny at the same time), or demonstrating how a personality can be taken apart and put together again, all in the course of a ten-minute movie which might take years to make. Practical Dreamers takes us to this other side of the media plantation. In it, twenty-seven Canadian artists dish about how they get it done and why it matters. The conversations are personal, up close and jargon free, smart without smarting. The stellar cast includes smartbomb Steve Reinke; visionary Peter Mettler; Middle East specialist Jayce Salloum; queer Asian avatars Richard Fung, Midi Onodera, Ho Tam, and Wayne Yung; footage recyclers Aleesa Cohene and Jubal Brown; overhead projector king Daniel Barrow; First Nations vets Kent Monkman and Shelley Niro; international art presence Paulette Philips; and documentarian Donigan Cumming. These in-depth talks come lavishly illustrated in an oversized volume.
