    Book Details:

Book excerpt: The world's most powerful man, Qi nl ng, emperor of China, invites the famous eighteenth-century clockmaker Alister Cox to his court in Beijing. There, in the heart of the Forbidden City, the Englishman and his assistants are to build machines that mark the passing of time as a child or a condemned man might experience it and that capture the many shades of happiness, suffering, love, and loss that come with that passing. Mystified by the rituals of a rigidly hierarchical society dominated by an unimaginably wealthy, god-like ruler, Cox musters all his expertise and ingenuity to satisfy the emperor's desires. Finally, Qi nl ng, also known by the moniker Lord of Time, requests the construction of a clock capable of measuring eternity--a perpetuum mobile. Seizing this chance to realize a long-held dream and honor the memory of his late beloved daughter, yet conscious of the impossibility of his task, Cox sets to work. As the court is suspended in a never-ending summer, festering with evil gossip about the monster these foreigners are creating, the Englishmen wonder if they will ever escape from their gilded cage. Richly imagined and recounted in vivid prose of extraordinary beauty, Cox, or The Course of Time is a stunning illustration of Christoph Ransmayr's talent for imbuing a captivating tale with intense metaphorical, indeed metaphysical force. More than a meeting of two men, one isolated by power, the other by grief, this is an exploration of mortality and a virtuoso demonstration that storytelling alone can truly conquer time.

Book Forbidden Religion

Download or read book Forbidden Religion written by J. Douglas Kenyon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-09-22 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals the thread that unites the spiritual paths that have opposed orthodox religion over the centuries and the challenge they provide to the status quo • Contains 40 essays by 18 key investigators of heresies and suppressed spiritual traditions, including Steven Sora, Ian Lawton, Jeff Nisbet, P.M.H. Atwater, John Chambers, and Vincent Bridges • Edited by Atlantis Rising publisher, J. Douglas Kenyon Following the model of his bestselling Forbidden History, J. Douglas Kenyon has assembled from his bi-monthly journal Atlantis Rising material that explores the hidden path of the religions banned by the orthodox Church--from the time before Christ when the foundations of Christianity were being laid to the tumultuous times of the Cathars and Templars and the Masons of the New World. Revealed in this investigation of the roots of Western faith are the intimate ties of ancient Egyptian religion to Christianity, the true identities of the three magi, the link forged by the Templars between early Christianity and the Masons, and how these hidden religious currents still influence the modern world. This book serves as a compelling introduction to the true history of the heretical religious traditions that played as vital a role in society as the established faiths that continuously tried to suppress them. Born in the same religious ferment that gave birth to Christianity, these spiritual paths survived in the “heresies” of the Middle Ages, and in the theories of the great Renaissance thinkers and their successors, such as Isaac Newton and Giordano Bruno. Brought to the New World by the Masons who inspired the American Revolution, the influence of these forbidden religions can be still found today in “The Star Spangled Banner” and in such Masonic symbols as the pyramid on the back of the dollar bill.

Book excerpt: Poetry. LGBT Studies. "Michael Broder's moving and lucid poems have heart, music, audacity and they give a quiet, lasting pleasure, like an ancient Greek torso reshaped for the space age. THIS LIFE NOW is full of salt, sex, TV, and other riveting varieties of poised explosiveness, to which his lucky reader blissfully surrenders." Wayne Koestenbaum "Dare I confess that this wise and sassy and heartbreaking collection made me scour YouTube for past episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Such are the subtle, ethereal, and playful gifts of Michael Broder's poems that a reader won't want to miss any allusion. No matter how bittersweet or fleeting, these poems, which span more than thirty years of an emerging queer consciousness, chart an unflinching poetics for the missing and unaccounted for. The book makes so many foundational moments and episodes of a thriving culture reappear and cohere, with such grim acceptance and celebration, that it takes our breath away." Peter Covino"

Book excerpt: There are no miracles. There are only phenomena that we might not be able to explain and scientifically confirm at this stage, so some people call them "miracles". On the quest to understand miracles, this book reveals new knowledge. The answers are found in pioneering scientific research, and also in ancient wisdom. There are some unique phenomena connected to Tesla Metamorphosis(r), the healing modality which attracts great interest because of the amazing healing results, and the effect of Tesla Waves on the evolution of human consciousness. The subject of this book is expanded to understanding the healing phenomena in general, merging science and spirituality. Personal experiences are presented with childlike honesty and a genuine sense of humour. Anya Petrovic explains: "This story is real. I live this story, and it awakened a curious child in me again. It all started like a fairy tale, the fairly tale which was later scientifically confirmed."The spirit of Nikola Tesla is imbued throughout this book, giving it a new dimension. Tesla's ingenuity is in his spirituality. This man who made discoveries all modern technology is base on, said: "The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade, then in all previous centuries of its existence."* Also available the version of this book with full colour images that confirm the new phenomena related to Tesla Metamorphosis. Book Turbo folk Music and Cultural Representations of National Identity in Former Yugoslavia

Download or read book Turbo folk Music and Cultural Representations of National Identity in Former Yugoslavia written by Uroš Čvoro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbo-folk music is the most controversial form of popular culture in the new states of former Yugoslavia. Theoretically ambitious and innovative, this book is a new account of popular music that has been at the centre of national, political and cultural debates for over two decades. Beginning with 1970s Socialist Yugoslavia, Uroš Čvoro explores the cultural and political paradoxes of turbo-folk: described as ’backward’ music, whose misogynist and Serb nationalist iconography represents a threat to cosmopolitanism, turbo-folk’s iconography is also perceived as a ’genuinely Balkan’ form of resistance to the threat of neo-liberalism. Taking as its starting point turbo-folk’s popularity across national borders, Čvoro analyses key songs and performers in Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia. The book also examines the effects of turbo on the broader cultural sphere - including art, film, sculpture and architecture - twenty years after its inception and popularization. What is proposed is a new way of reading the relationship of contemporary popular music to processes of cultural, political and social change - and a new understanding of how fundamental turbo-folk is to the recent history of former Yugoslavia and its successor states.
