Download or read book A World in a Shell written by Thom van Dooren and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the trails of Hawai‘i’s snails to explore the simultaneously biological and cultural significance of extinction. In this time of extinctions, the humble snail rarely gets a mention. And yet snails are disappearing faster than any other species. In A World in a Shell, Thom van Dooren offers a collection of snail stories from Hawai‘i—once home to more than 750 species of land snails, almost two-thirds of which are now gone. Following snail trails through forests, laboratories, museums, and even a military training facility, and meeting with scientists and Native Hawaiians, van Dooren explores ongoing processes of ecological and cultural loss as they are woven through with possibilities for hope, care, mourning, and resilience. Van Dooren recounts the fascinating history of snail decline in the Hawaiian Islands: from deforestation for agriculture, timber, and more, through the nineteenth century shell collecting mania of missionary settlers, and on to the contemporary impacts of introduced predators. Along the way he asks how both snail loss and conservation efforts have been tangled up with larger processes of colonization, militarization, and globalization. These snail stories provide a potent window into ongoing global process of environmental and cultural change, including the largely unnoticed disappearance of countless snails, insects, and other less charismatic species. Ultimately, van Dooren seeks to cultivate a sense of wonder and appreciation for our damaged planet, revealing the world of possibilities and relationships that lies coiled within a snail’s shell.

Download or read book To Explain It All written by Chris Edwards and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World history is not a subject; it is all the subjects. Because of this, world history as a discipline has never fit well with the traditional definition of historical research. H.G. Wells wrote the first true book of world history in 1920 and only a few authors have made the attempt to “explain it all” since Wells. In that time, world history has become the chosen subject of polymaths and the field possesses the most potential to unite all of the disciplines of knowledge. The subject of world history has developed several approaches, with “Big History” being the most modern, and flawed, of its variants.

Book Social Development as Preference Management

Download or read book Social Development as Preference Management written by Rachel Karniol and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karniol engagingly presents social development in children through the language of preference management. Conversational excerpts garnered from around the world trace how parents talk about preferences, how infants' and children's emergent language conveys their preferences, how children themselves are impacted by others' preferences, and how they in turn influence the preferences of adults and peers. The language of preferences is used to crack into altruism, aggression, and morality, which are ways of coming to terms with other people's preferences. Behind the scenes is a cognitive engine that uses transformational thought – conducting temporal, imaginal, and mental transformations – to figure out other people's preferences and to find more sophisticated means of outmanoeuvring others by persuading them and playing with one's own mind and other people's minds when preferences are blocked. This book is a unique and sometimes amusing must-read for anyone interested in child development, language acquisition, socialisation, and communication.

Book You Made Me Love You

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Edgar Wideman
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2022-02-15
  • ISBN : 1982148926
  • Pages : 496 pages

Download or read book You Made Me Love You written by John Edgar Wideman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful and “stunning” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) selection of the best of John Edgar Wideman’s short stories over his fifty-year career, representing the wide range of his intellectual and artistic pursuits. When John Edgar Wideman won the PEN Malamud Award in 2019, he joined a list of esteemed writers—from Eudora Welty to George Saunders—all of whom are acknowledged masters of the short story. Wideman’s commitment to short fiction has been lifelong, and here he gathers a representative selection from throughout his career, stories that “have a wary, brooding spirit, a lonely intelligence…[and] air the problem of consciousness, including the fragile contingency of our existence” (The New York Times). Wideman’s stories are grounded in the streets and the people of Homewood, the Pittsburgh neighborhood of his childhood, but they range far beyond there, to the small western towns of Wyoming and historic Philadelphia, the contemporary world and the ancient past. He explores the interior lives of his characters, and the external pressures that shape them. These stories are as intellectually intricate as they are rich with the language and character. “Wideman has been compared to William Faulkner and James Baldwin…[these] prove that he is every bit as masterful a cartographer of the American spirit as his forebears" (Esquire). Comprised of thirty-five stories drawn from past collections (American Histories, Briefs, God’s Gym, All Stories Are True, Fever, and Damballah), and an introductory essay by the National Book Critics Circle board member and scholar Walton Muyumba, this volume of Wideman’s selected stories celebrates the lifelong significance of this major American writer’s essential contribution to a form—illuminating the ways that he has made it his own. “If there were any doubts Wideman belongs to the American canon, this puts them to bed” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wacky humor. Happily ever afters. Lots of laughs. All the feels. If hilarious romantic comedies are your jam, you’ll want to check out this collection. Three women traveling the world who find love when they least expect it. BOOK 1 – SMITTEN WITH RAVIOLI Love is on the menu in this sweet romantic comedy set in Italy. Ginny's Italian cooking course was supposed to be a peaceful escape from her troubles. But when she meets Preston, an infuriating know-it-all history professor, she quickly realizes her past has come back to haunt her. The last thing Ginny needs is for Preston to find out who she really is. Her plan seems foolproof—assume a fake identity and keep her distance from the pretentious jerk. But when they’re forced to work together, Ginny starts to see a different side of Preston. She’s torn between her desire to reveal who she really is and her fear that she’ll lose everything in the process. Will Ginny be able to trust Preston with her heart, or will love turn out to be the ultimate recipe for disaster? BOOK 2 – SMITTEN WITH CROISSANTS Opposites attract in this geeky and sweet romantic comedy set in France. When Mia first met Pierre, she thought he was just a hot French waiter. Turns out he’s a smooth-talking billionaire. Mia learned the hard way not to trust rich guys. But when she finds herself in Paris, unemployed and homeless, Pierre comes to her rescue, and she’s forced to overlook the fact that he’s loaded. Mia tries to resist Pierre’s charms, but when she discovers they have a shared love of all things science fiction, her defenses start to crumble. Mia begins to wonder if a relationship with Pierre can work, despite their vastly different backgrounds. Can a small-town American girl from the wrong side of the tracks and a cosmopolitan French guy with a geeky sense of humor find happiness together, or will the dark forces in the universe tear them apart? BOOK 3 – SMITTEN WITH STRUDEL Cloak-and-dagger shenanigans are on the agenda in this sweet romantic comedy set in Germany. When Isabelle took a job working on a European riverboat, the last thing she expected was to be recruited by a covert spy organization. Enter Erich—a devastatingly handsome German guy who reminds her of James Bond, though the organization he works for is more along the lines of Get Smart. Their IT department is the worst, their intel is rarely right, and the woman who’s in charge . . . well, let’s just say she’s scarier than the bad guys. If Isabelle’s past has taught her anything, it’s that you should never trust a man who trades in secrets for a living. But how can she say no to saving the world, even if she’s in danger of losing her heart?
