Book excerpt: With rare maps, prints, and photographs, this unique volume explores the dramatic history of the Americas through the birth and development of the hemisphere's great cities. Written by award-winning author David F. Marley, Historic Cities of the Americas covers the hard-to-find information of these cities' earliest years, including the unique aspects of each region's economy and demography, such as the growth of local mining, trade, or industry. The chronological layout, aided by the numerous maps and photographs, reveals the exceptional changes, relocations, destruction, and transformations these cities endured to become the metropolises they are today. Historic Cities of the Americas provides over 70 extensively detailed entries covering the foundation and evolution of the most significant urban areas in the western hemisphere. Critically researched, this work offers a rare look into the times prior to Christopher Columbus' arrival in 1492 and explores the common difficulties overcome by these European-conquered or -founded cities as they flourished into some of the most influential locations in the world.

Book International Practice for Architects

Download or read book International Practice for Architects written by Perkins Eastman Architects and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-12-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to launch an international design practice and gain projects overseas A comprehensive overview of the rewards and perils of international practice for architects, this book draws on the experience of dozens of leading practitioners to present lessons for the profession. Written primarily for architects, the content is also relevant to any design professional considering working in a foreign country. Among the many questions it helps answer: * Should my firm consider pursuing work overseas? * Can a small or medium-sized firm successfully pursue international work? * How do we start and how do we get a first project in another country? * How is international practice different from working in the United States? * What contract provisions and other measures will help minimize the risks? * Should we have an overseas office and, if so, what type? * Should we consider outsourcing to overseas staff as a way to even out workload and increase profits? * What does the future look like for international practice? The largest section of the book expands on these issues with specific guidelines for working in more than 185 countries. Countries with little potential for North American architects are summarized briefly, while fuller descriptions are provided for more than 25 countries that have been or could be major markets for international design services.

Book Regenerating Cultural Religious Heritage

Download or read book Regenerating Cultural Religious Heritage written by Olimpia Niglio and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-03 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces important reflections on understanding the meaning of cultural-religious heritage in an international context and their relationship with issues of sustainability at the local community level. Through a holistic approach, the book charts new courses in analyzing different cultural policies and methods for preserving and enhancing cultural heritage. Stemming from an intercultural seminar promoted by the International Scientific Committee Places of Religion and Ritual (ICOMOS PRERICO) under the theme of “Reuse and regenerations of cultural-religious heritage in the world: Comparison among cultures,” the book examines the scientific diplomacy and cultural strategies promoted by countries in dialogue with the UN 2030 Agenda, as well as Agenda 21 for Culture. The book seeks to reinforce the value of local cultural policies for supporting and enhancing cultural-religious heritage through specific programs and collaborations in dialogue with government policies. This collection is relevant to scholars working in areas relating to cultural heritage, religious heritage, architectural restoration, protection of the local inheritances, law, and management of the cultural sites.

But, the villagers are prone to gossip about young Harry’s past, and one person in particular cannot forgive him for tearing down the old house. Will Miss Marple’s acumen be up to the task of solving the story?

Book Frank Lloyd Wright

  • Author : Anthony Alofsin
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2023-11-10

Download or read book Frank Lloyd Wright written by Anthony Alofsin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask Americans to think of a famous architect and the person they are most likely to name is Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright's work, his reputation, and his long and colorful career have made him an icon of modern American architecture. But despite his status as America's most celebrated architect, his influence throughout an active practice spanning the years 1896 to 1959 is so wide and complex that it has been difficult to grasp fully. The essays in this book look not at the United States, the context usually associated with Wright, but at countries around the globe. Anthony Alofsin has assembled a superb collection of scholars to examine Wright's importance from Japan to Great Britain, France to Chile, Mexico to Russia, and the Middle East. Interwoven in the essays are stories of champions and critics, rivals and acolytes, books and exhibitions, attitudes toward America and individualism, and the many ways Wright's ideas were brought to the world. Together the essays represent a first look at Wright's impact abroad, some from the perspective of natives of the countries discussed and others from that of informed outsiders. Of special note is Bruno Zevi's firsthand account of traveling with Wright in Italy. Zevi was instrumental in bringing Wright's ideas to Italy and in helping launch the movement for organic architecture. Of unusual interest in light of today's events in Iraq is Mina Marefat's essay on Wright's elaborate designs for a cultural center for the city of Baghdad. The Baghdad projects, which were never realized after the assassination of King Faisal II, were Wright's principal focus in his last decade. In searching out the little known rather than reexamining the well-established aspects of Frank Lloyd Wright's work, this collection is a rewarding exploration of his vision and influence.
