Book The Comparative Reception of Relativity

Download or read book The Comparative Reception of Relativity written by T.F Glick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume grew out of a double session of the Boston Collo quium for the Philosophy of Science held in Boston on March 25, 1983. The papers presented there (by Biezunski, Glick, Goldberg, and Judith Goodstein!) offered both sufficient comparability to establish regulari ties in the reception of relativity and Einstein's impact in France, Spain, the United States and Italy, and sufficient contrast to suggest the salience of national inflections in the process. The interaction among the participants and the added perspectives offered by members of the audience suggested the interest of commissioning articles for a more inclusive volume which would cover as many national cases as we could muster. Only general guidelines were given to the authors: to treat the special or general theories, or both, hopefully in a multidisciplinary setting, to examine the popular reception of relativity, or Einstein's personal impact, or to survey all these topics. In a previous volume, on the 2 comparative reception of Darwinism, one of us devised a detailed set of guidelines which in general were not followed. In our opinion, the studies in this collection offer greater comparability, no doubt because relativity by its nature and its complexity offers a sharper, more easily bounded target. As in the Darwinism volume, this book concludes with an essay intended to draw together in comparative perspective some of many themes addressed by the participants.

Book I fondamenti della Relativit

Download or read book I fondamenti della Relativit written by Rocco Vittorio Macri and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Reality of Time and Einstein s Spider Web

Download or read book The Reality of Time and Einstein s Spider Web written by Rocco Vittorio Macri and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest mystery of all, the enigma of Time, shone like a blinding quasar upon the eyes of the creator of the Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein. Indeed there has been no significant thinker, from antiquity down to the present day, who has not confronted the mystery of Time and made it an essential part of his own philosophy. Even in Plotinus’ days the problem of Time was considered to be “ancient” and “continually revived”. Thinking about Time is much like ploughing the ocean. Despite this, the Twentieth Century saw an unprecedented and new operational definition set forth by Einstein, who stripped the notion of Time of all metaphysical content, and made it ontologically eliminable. The verdict in our days is, "Time does not exist." Yet there have not been wanting thinkers who have attempted to swim against the current, to throw down the gauntlet to “the Murderer of Time”, to the Demolisher of the Absolute, showing that the Time is not an illusion, Time is real. These stirring moments in the history of intellectual endeavour are collected here, revivifying the philosophical face of every dissident. The subject is interesting not only to experts in the field, but also to every inquiring mind thirsting for historical truth. The reader who is fascinated by the fundamental ideas of physics and philosophy will find great satisfaction here. In addition he will find here the ultimate roots of our contemporary Weltanschaaung.

Book Science Worldviews and Education

Download or read book Science Worldviews and Education written by Michael Matthews and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has its origins in a special issue of the journal Science & Education (Volume 18 Numbers 6–7, 2009). The essay by Costas Skordoulis – ‘Science and Worldviews in the Marxist Tradition’ – did not appear in that special issue due to a mistake in production scheduling. It was published in an earlier issue of the journal (Volume 17 Number 6, 2008), but has been included in this book version of the special issue. As explained in the Introduction, the catalyst for the journal special issue was the essay on ‘Science, Worldviews and Education’ submitted to the journal by Hugh G. Gauch Jr. This was circulated to the other contributors who were asked to write their own contribution in the light of the arguments and literature contained in the paper. Hugh made brief ‘Responses and Clari?cations’ after the papers were written. However the Tanis Edis article on Islam and my own article on Priestley were processed too late to bene?t from Hugh’s appraisal. The journal is associated with the International History, Philosophy, and Science Teaching Group which was formed in 1987. The group stages biennial international conferences and occasional regional conferences (details can be found at www. ihpst. org). The group, though the journal, conferences, and its electronic newsletter (at www. ihpst.

Book The Nature of Quantum Paradoxes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three days in April of 1985, Cesena (Italy) was the scene of a national conference which was convened, by the Assessorato alia Cultura of this town under the auspices of the Societa Italiana di Logica e Filosofia delle Scienze (SILFS), in order to celebrate two historical milestones: the centenary of the birth of Niels Bohr, who was to become the leader of the orthodox, or Copenhagen, interpretation of quantum theory, and the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the most influential challenge to this interpretation which was contained in the well-known paper coauthored by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen. The proceedings of the Cesena meeting, which are collected in the present volume, are intended to provide an exhaustive and panoramic view of the most recent investigations carried out by Italian scientists and philo sophers engaged in research on the foundations of quantum physics. What emerges is a critical review of, and alternative approaches to, the orthodox interpretation of the Copenhagen school.
