Also, America's ignoble past, and her own regrets. She is surrounded by dead lakes, fake facts, Open Carry maniacs, and oodles of online advice about survivalism, veil toss duties, and how to be more like Jane Fonda. But what do you do when you keep stepping on your son's toy tractors, your life depends on stolen land and broken treaties, and nobody helps you when you get a flat tire on the interstate, not even the Abominable Snowman? When are you allowed to start swearing? With a torrent of consciousness and an intoxicating coziness, Ducks, Newburyport lays out a whole world for you to tramp around in, by turns frightening and funny. Book Letters from Mississippi

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Martínez
  • Publisher : Zephyr Press
  • Release : 2024-07-16
  • ISBN : 1938890329
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Letters from Mississippi written by Elizabeth Martínez and published by Zephyr Press. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters from Mississippi offers a riveting, personal and multi-faceted narrative of the dramatic events that took place during the summer of 1964, "Freedom Summer," when hundreds of people came to Mississippi to volunteer with the Mississippi Summer Voting Project. The book covers the disappearance and murder of James Cheney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, the Freedom Schools, the violence and tensions at voting registration centers, and the political struggles in the halls of power. The original publication of Letters from Mississippi in 1965 was an immediate record of the mostly white volunteers in the Mississippi Summer Voting Project of 1964 ("Freedom Summer"). It went out of print in 1970. Zephyr Press' 2002 edition took the original text and placed it in a context of the history of the civil rights movement, of the broader scene in Mississippi during that summer, and of the subsequent lives of the volunteers. That edition has become a staple in studies of the civil rights movement, but it still focuses mostly on the "outsiders" in their Mississippi communities. This fiftieth anniversary edition includes: expanded biographical notes from previous editions, additional biographies of contributors to the original book, expanded notes, a filmography, and 40 pages of poetry written in the Freedom Schools by Mississippi students in 1964. The result is a wider resource for scholarship as well as for a general understanding of this critical moment in civil rights history. Elizabeth Martínez (1925-2021), edited and wrote the preface for Letters from Mississippi. She published six books and numerous articles on popular struggles in the Americas including De Colores Means All of Us: Latina Views for a Multi-Colored Century. Julian Bond (1940-2015) wrote the introduction to the book. He served four terms on the NAACP National Board and was chairman from 1998 to 2010. He was president of the Atlanta NAACP from 1978 until 1989.

Book Without Reserve

Download or read book Without Reserve written by Dorinda Vollmer and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dorinda Vollmer has lived a life full of music, art, and poetry, which have sustained her in the happiest and the darkest of times. Her abiding passion has always been to live a life of purpose. With determination and courage, Dorinda often chose the more difficult path in life in favour of being true to herself. She answered the call to ministry in the United Church and chose to raise her son alone. The most difficult part of Dorinda’s journey was through her work as a minister, witnessing the struggle to survive faced by the people of the Roseau River Indian Reserve in Manitoba. Without Reserve offers a special perspective on the legacy of destructive historical and on-going government policies regarding First Nations people in Canada. It also unveils a lesson Dorinda learned along her journey: When the sky darkens, people search for light. In Without Reserve, the first part of Dorinda’s memoirs, those who find themselves at a crossroads will see that anything is possible. Her stories reflect a faith in the goodness of humanity and the ability of individuals to rise above personal suffering. Each person Dorinda has met throughout her life has deeply touched her heart and remains imbedded in her soul. In sharing her memoirs, Dorinda hopes the stories will touch people and empower them to empathize with those who struggle.
