Book excerpt: What does it take to love your life more fully, to feel more focused and productive, and to have deeper, more satisfying relationships with everyone in your life? All it takes is being more mindful and more attuned to your life and what is happening in the moment, whether youre sipping your morning latte, helping your kid with homework, or stuck in traffic on the way to work. Thats what Marriage and Family Therapist and mindfulness practitioner Laurie Goldey discovered more than a decade ago, when, skeptically, she began taking baby steps toward living a more mindful life. What she found was, making tiny changes are all it takes to incorporate noticing into your daily routine, whatever you happen to be doing. Focusing on the task at hand (whether mundane or exceptional) can help you find joy in the most routine or habitual tasks and can bring out your best self, impacting your family, your job, and all of your relationships (especially the one with yourself). If you follow the week-by-week suggestions in this book, you will feel less overwhelmed, less anxious, less likely to spend early-morning hours in bed wide awake, ticking off your to-do list. And thats just the start of the new life ahead of you. Before you know it, youll be sitting pretty.

Book The Measure of Life

Download or read book The Measure of Life written by Herbert Marder and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elegantly written and richly detailed biography tells the story of Virginia Woolf's last ten years, from the creation of her great visionary novel, The Waves, to her suicide in 1941. Herbert Marder looks closely at Woolf's views on totalitarianism and her depictions of Britain under siege to create a remarkable portrait of a mature and renowned writer during a time of rising fascist violence. An awareness of personal danger, Marder says, colored Woolf's actions and consciousness in the years leading up to World War II. She practiced her art with intense dedication and was much admired for her wit and vivacity. But she had previously tried to kill herself, and she asserted her right to die if her manic-depressive illness became intolerable. Waves and water haunted her imagination; visions of drowning recurred in her work. The Measure of Life suggests that Woolf anticipated her suicide, and indeed enacted it symbolically many times before the event. Marder's account of her death emphasizes the importance of her relationship with her doctor and distant cousin, Octavia Wilberforce. Wilberforce's letters about Woolf's last months, including some previously unpublished passages, appear in the appendix.Staying close to the spirit of Woolf's own writing, Marder traces her evolving social consciousness in the 1930s, connecting her growing concern with politics and social history with the facts of her daily life. He stresses her endurance as a working writer, and explores her friendships, her complex relations with servants, and her activities at the Hogarth Press. The Measure of Life illuminates the unspoken quarrels and obscure acts of courage that provide a key, as Woolf herself believed, to the hidden roots of our existence. By letting the reader see events as Virginia Woolf saw them, Marder's compelling narrative captures both her unique comic spirit and her profound seriousness.

Download or read book Catkiller 3 2 written by Raymond Caryl and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catkiller 3-2 provides unique insights into the role of the tactical air controller, airborne (TACA) in I Corps as seen through the eyes of one of the pilots who flew low-flying, unarmed, single-engine aircraft in support of Marine ground units during the Vietnam War. When Gen. William Westmoreland changed the Marines' role in I Corps into a combat one, the Marines found themselves in need of more fixed-wing aircraft to handle the TACA missions. The advance party of the Army's 220th Reconnaissance Aircraft Company (RAC) arrived in Vietnam in late June 1965 thinking they were going to be assigned to III Corps Tactical Zone. However, because of the shortage of existing Marine Birddogs, the 220th was immediately reassigned to I Corps and came under the operational control of the Marines. No other work details the tactics, restrictions, aerial maneuvers, and dangers experienced by the Army pilots and Marine aerial observers flying these missions. As young lieutenants and captains, they had at their beck and call as much authority to request and control artillery and air strikes as ground commanders of much higher rank. Raymond G. Caryl provides unrivaled examples of the cultural mores, attitudes, and recreational activity of these young pilots and observers supporting the ground forces.
