Avery Willard, a divorced commercial real estate broker at the peak of his career keeps his awareness of others, and himself, locked down. When the consequences of his adolescent behavior snap the lock he is forced to confront his contradictions and awakening consciousness. This fast moving yet character driven novel centers on relationships among men: personal, professional, and most poignantly, between four generations of fathers and sons. It is also about men and women, power and sex, and money. As Avery struggles with his demons the mood is dark, but humor and insight never fail to illuminate this story about men’s humanity, and the empathy and compassion they cloak from others, and themselves.

Book excerpt: Captain Bunn founded SOAR to develop effective methods for dealing with flight anxiety. Therapists who have found this phobia difficult to treat will find everything they need to give their clients success. Anxious flyers who have “tried everything” to no avail can look forward to joining the nearly 10,000 graduates of the SOAR program who now have the whole world open to them as they fly anxiety free wherever they want. This approach begins by explaining how anxiety, claustrophobia, and panic are caused when noises, motions—or even the thought of flying—trigger excessive stress hormones. Then, to stop this problem, Captain Bunn takes the reader step-by-step through exercises that permanently and automatically control these feelings. He also explains how flying works, why it is safe, and teaches flyers how to strategically plan their flight, choose the right airlines, meet the captain, and so on. Through this program, Captain Bunn has helped thousands overcome their fear of flying. Now his book arms readers with the information they need to control their anxiety and fly comfortably.

Book Planned Change

Download or read book Planned Change written by Gilmore Crosby and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gil Crosby has accomplished what most of us in the world of applied behavioral science, in general, and OD and T-Group training, in particular, have not—making the theoretical father of our work accessible. Thus, this book is a gift and with it we can understand more deeply and teach others more accurately what Lewin actually stated and meant. Moreover, the book is reader-friendly, visually appealing, and humorous rather than academically boring. Thank you, Gil!" Dr. W. Warner Burke E.L. Thorndike Professor of Psychology and Education Teachers College, Columbia University Kurt Lewin (1890-1947) was a visionary psychologist and social scientist who used rigorous research methods to establish an approach to planned change that is both practical and reliable. He mentored and inspired most of the early professionals who came to identify themselves as practitioners of organization development (OD). He also fostered the emergence of the experiential learning method known as the T-group, which uniquely structures group dynamics into a laboratory for dramatic individual and team development. In the early days, most OD professionals learned much about themselves and about group dynamics through T-group experiences. Lewin’s methods, though little known, yield consistent business results such as increased performance and improved morale. His approaches have the rare impact of not just changing behavior, but changing the beliefs that underlie behavior. Sadly, most OD professionals today— business and organizational leaders, community organizers, and people, in general—have never read any of Lewin’s actual writing beyond a quote or two. Indeed, some in the OD profession have rejected or distanced themselves from what they think Lewin taught, even though they and many others seem to know very little about his methods or history. Because Lewin was a prolific writer, one of the author’s main goals is to organize his immense body of published work so that readers can easily explore the source material and form their own opinions. Essentially, this book is aimed at introducing Lewin in a new way, both simplified yet substantial enough to guide anyone who is trying to plan change, whether at the individual, group/team, organizational, or societal levels. Lewin was not trying to create methods for OD professionals alone (or for social scientists as he regarded himself). In his interventions, he taught those how to do their own version of planned change. He believed social science might be the light that helps create a brighter future for humanity. This text transfers this knowledge to a broad audience so that each reader can more successfully implement organizational and social change.

Book excerpt: Nobody would believe Dennis Leeper was a hero. He was the kind of kid you hid from when he pedaled his rickety bike down the road. But Jamie couldn’t say no when his father asked him to include Dennis in the raft project. And someone needed to hold the line when Jamie and his cousin Jerry finally got the raft in the river. But they should have known that Dennis couldn’t be trusted to hold onto it. Without paddles and out of people’s sight, the three boys are swept downstream—toward the dams, the steep falls, and three separate destinies. One swims to shore. One is rescued. And one never returns alive. Overcome by guilt and the fear that Dennis’s father will take revenge for his son’s death, Jamie tells everyone how he survived: Dennis was a hero. The question is: Will anyone believe it?

Book excerpt: This is a portrayal of two plebian families that lived far into the Appalachian Mountains. The fiery Jasper Burnine family, Caucasian, and The Moon Clan, Cherokee, were across from the other on Clear Creek. Surprisingly, they became close. The hot-tempered Burnines became bitter over the ill treatment of the Moon clan. The Moon, the ex-Cherokee warrior, became an enraged madman. Privately he declared war on those that came to molest his family. The intruders that couldnt escape his wrath were left as food for the buzzards and foxes. This book has a powerful story. It is fast paced, violent, romantic, bawdy, hard bitten, comical, and haunting. Life was hard in the mountains. Half the children died young. In the new nation there was little law enforcement, so each family stayed on guard. The time, 1790 to 1840 was a time of crisis for the new nation called the United States of America. Would it remain a nation? The British were lurking, waiting for an opening. The Cherokees, beaten in war, saw their land taken as white people came to settle the new continent. The Indians worried over this for years. Would they have to move across the big river to the new country?

Whilst he was at university, Muir was a frequent caller at Carr’s house. She was a botanist and lover of nature whom Muir would come to consider his spiritual mother - he felt that Carr thoroughly understood and sympathised with him. His letters, mostly written from the Yosemite Valley, give a good indication to his sensitive spirit and the life he lived sheep-herding, guilding, and tending a sawmill. This volume is highly recommended for those with an interest in the life and mind of this great author, and it would make for a worthy addition to any personal library. John Muir (1838 - 1914) was a Scottish-American writer, naturalist, and pioneering advocate of American wilderness preservation.
