Download or read book The 34 Ton Bat written by Steve Rushin and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unorthodox history of baseball told through the enthralling stories of the game's objects, equipment, and characters. No sport embraces its wild history quite like baseball, especially in memorabilia and objects. Sure, there are baseball cards and team pennants. But there are also huge balls, giant bats, peanuts, cracker jacks, eyeblack, and more, each with a backstory you have to read to believe. In The 34-Ton Bat, Sports Illustrated writer Steve Rushin tells the real, unvarnished story of baseball through the lens of all the things that make it the game that it is. Rushin weaves these rich stories -- from ballpark pipe organs played by malevolent organists to backed up toilets at Ebbets Field -- together in their order of importance (from most to least) for an entertaining and compulsive read, glowing with a deep passion for America's Pastime. The perfect holiday gift for casual fans and serious collectors alike, The 34-Ton Bat is a true heavy hitter.

Download or read book Let s Talk about Sleep written by Daniel A. Barone and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News about sleep is everywhere we turn, and the statistics are numbing: Some 50-70 million Americans are affected by chronic sleep disorders and intermittent sleep problems; an estimated 30-35% of adults complain of insomnia; one in every 25 Americans takes a prescription sleep medication; more than a third of American adults don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis; sleep disorders account for an estimated $16 billion in medical costs each year, plus indirect costs due to missed days of work, decreased productivity and related factors. And questions abound: why do we need to sleep at all? What happens when we sleep? What happens to the brain? We know the brain is active when we sleep, but what about the mind? And what are dreams? An accessible and lively take on sleep, this book provides answers to those and other key questions. Along the way, it highlights the lessons a well-known neurologist has learned and what he shares with his patients on a daily basis. It discusses — in terms everyone can understand — what we know about sleep, what can go wrong with it, and what we can do to fix it. It also delves into what some of the great scientists and spiritual teachers have told us about sleep. The book is packed with useful information and suggestions that will improve all aspects of readers’ lives.

Download or read book Bob Marley written by Chris Salewicz and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was it about Bob Marley that made him so popular in a world dominated by rock 'n' roll? How is it that he not only has remained the single most successful reggae artist ever, but also has become a shining beacon of radicalism and peace to generation after generation of fans? The man who introduced reggae to a worldwide audience, Marley was a hero figure in the classic, mythological sense. From immensely humble beginnings, with talent and religious belief his only weapons, the Jamaican recording artist applied himself with unstinting perseverance to spreading his prophetic musical message across the globe. In 1980, on tour, Bob Marley and the Wailers played to the largest audiences a musical act had ever experienced in Europe. Less than a year later, Marley would die, only thirty-six years old. Sales of Marley's albums before his death were spectacular; in the years since he died, they have been phenomenal. Chris Salewicz, the bestselling author of Redemption Song, the classic biography of Joe Strummer, interviewed Bob Marley in Jamaica in 1979. Now, for the first time, in this thorough, detailed account of Marley's life and the world in which he grew up and which he came to dominate, Salewicz brings to life not only the Rastafari religion and the musical scene in Jamaica, but also the spirit of the man himself. Interviews with dozens of people who knew Marley and have never spoken before are woven through the narrative as Salewicz seeks to explain why Marley has become such an enigmatic and heroic figure, loved by millions all over the world.
Download or read book Lyrics by Adonai written by J. Steven Murry and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever written someone a love song? Or has someone ever written you a love song? Imagine the songwriter saying, "Listen very carefully to the words and you will know what is in my heart." Would you hang on to every word and every note? Would you strive to understand a deeper meaning to the lover's message, or would you just hear the noise? Paying close attention is the idea behind maskil psalms. Maskil means contemplation. Out of the one hundred and fifty psalms, there are thirteen psalms which are given this instruction by the psalmist. As God often does, these psalms teach lessons on several different levels: as poetry, as history, as moral lessons, as instruction for psychological health, as testimonies of loving-kindness. Lyrics by Adonai is a study of the maskil psalms attributable to King David, the sweet psalmist of Israel. In order to carefully listen to the words, these psalms have been arranged in chronological order and placed in the historical settings according to the events in David's life. The reader can better understand the history by viewing the events through the lens of the psalm. It is also the psalm which is clarified when the story is viewed through the eyes of history. However, the words of the contemplation psalms also speak to us across the span of years and are not limited to the history of ancient Israel. Through inspiration, God shows us how to handle betrayal, grief, persecution, and forgiveness. Through the words of David's pen, God sings to us a song of wisdom, grace, faith, love, and duty. With a blend of poetic insight, history, contemporary application, counseling, and spiritual shepherding, Lyrics by Adonai brings these lyrics to life.

Download or read book Easy Out On Third Raising A Child With Special Needs written by Mary Beth Czubay and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about children with special needs, and the joys and challenges that come along with raising them. It's about making them fit in and feel like they belong in the world. It offers hope and inspiration. This is my story. I will walk you through the journey I have taken raising my thirteen-year-old son, Bobby. It's a journey many have taken, but few have chosen. He was born with a club foot, mild cerebral palsy, and has developed other delays and disabilities. If you met Bobby, you might not even realize he's disabled, at first. If you spent a few minutes with him, you would realize he was a little slow or delayed. It's as if he is a ten- or eleven-year-old, in a thirteen-year-old's body. His brain is always a couple of years behind his body. Bobby is also very tall for his age, so he appears even older than he is, which only makes it harder. I have raised three typical children. They are now young adults and are well on their way to independence. They rely on me mostly for financial help or occasional guidance. Eventually, they will be on their own and live their lives as they choose. I fear Bobby will never be able to live on his own. I worry about his fate after my husband and I are gone. What will become of him? Friends and family, including his older brothers, assure me they will care for him, but I don't think any of them realize the enormous responsibility he is.
