The eight rooms of the museum set up inside the friary host a series of sections devoted to its origins and history as well as the life of those who joined the order and drew inspiration from the example of extraordinary Capuchin saints like Felix of Cantalice, Crispin of Viterbo and Joseph of Leonessa but also contemporary figures known to the public on a vast scale, such as St Pio of Pietrelcina, who bore the stigmata for fifty years, and Father Mariano of Turin, the first multimedia preacher.The museum is also a new repository for the artistic and historical legacy of the Capuchins of Rome and the region of Lazio, as its rooms are in fact designed not only to house and exhibit the various items but also to ensure their preservation. To this end, the opening of the museum was preceded by major work to restore the original splendour not only of various kinds of artworks, books and documents but also and above all Capuchin liturgical vessels and articles of everyday use epitomizing the spirit of humble self-sufficiency that is the hallmark of the order. Encapsulating the extraordinarily rich experience of nearly 500 years of Capuchin life, this museum is concerned not only with preserving the past but also with projecting itself into the future as a sort of ongoing laboratory of initiatives, a venue for exhibitions, cultural events and spiritual experiences aimed at establishing dialogue and asserting the continuing primacy of the human dimension today.

Beyond its influence in the Middle Ages, its importance is also borne out by the fact that it became the subject of commentary. During the sixteenth century it was gradually adopted as the official text for the teaching of scholastic theology in most European Catholic universities. As a result, university professors throughout Europe and the colonial Americas started lecturing and producing commentaries on the Summa and using it as a starting point for many theological and philosophical discussions. Some of the works of major authors such as Vitoria, Soto, Molina, Suárez and Arriaga are nothing more than commentaries on the Summa. This book is the first scholarly endeavour to investigate this commentary tradition. These new saints were near-contemporary citizens who were venerated by their compatriots without official sanction from the papacy. In doing so, the book uncovers a sub-culture of religious expression that has been overlooked in previous scholarship. The study highlights a myriad of hagiographical materials, both visual and textual, created to honour these new saints by members of four different Venetian communities: The Republican government; the monastic orders, mostly Benedictine; the mendicant orders; and local parishes. By scrutinising the hagiographic portraits described in painted vita panels, written vitae, passiones, votive images, sermons and sepulchre monuments, as well as archival and historical resources, the book identifies a specifically Venetian typology of sanctity tied to the idiosyncrasies of the city’s site and history. By focusing explicitly on local typological traits, the book produces an intimate and complex portrait of Venetian society and offers a framework for exploring the lived religious experience of late-mediaeval societies beyond the lagoon. As a result, it will be of keen interest to scholars of Venice, lived religion, hagiography, mediaeval history and visual culture.
