Download or read book Attachment and Immigrants written by Yolanda Van Ecke and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yolanda van Ecke's work on attachment and immigrants helps us to understand the common psychological characteristics that are shared by those who live life abroad. In Attachment and Immigrants she frames the experience of immigration in the context of the increasingly popular theory of attachment. In a series of well constructed academic, yet highly readable studies done with Dutch and Belgian immigrants in California, U.S.A. that follow, she outlines for the reader the specific psychological attachment issues that affect immigrants. Immigrants have unresolved attachment more often than nonimmigrants, and are more sensitive to experiences of isolation and separation, whereas nonimmigrants are more vulnerable in the face of illness. She also discusses career and personality aspects as they relate to immigrants with insecure attachment and provides suggestions for career counseling. This book should help professionals such as psychologists, therapist, social workers and educators to gain a deeper understanding of the psychology of immigrants.

Download or read book Qualitative Quantitative Analyses of Dutch and Afrikaans Grammar and Lexicon written by Robert S. Kirsner and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharing certain assumptions but differing in theory and practice, both Columbia School linguistics (CS) and Cognitive Grammar (CG) have increasingly supported their analyses with quantitative evidence. Citation of individual sentences, in isolation or in context, has been supplemented with counts of linguistic forms in texts, informant questionnaires, and perception tests. The present volume, continuing a dialogue between CS and CG, offers six such qualitative-quantitative studies, one on Afrikaans and five on Dutch. Topics include (a) demonstratives, (b) pragmatic particles and imperatives, (c) a puzzling “dismissive” idiom, (d) progressive aspect, and (e) indirect objects. While CS is better suited for analyzing relatively closed systems (e.g. tense, pronouns), CG provides more insight into the vagaries of the amorphous lexicon. The author also offers personal remarks on “linguistics as a path” and discusses how in one case a wrong prediction reflects his dual role as both linguist and student of Dutch as a foreign language.

Download or read book Spirituality in the Writings of Etty Hillesum written by Klaas Smelik and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the previous scholarship on Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) was done by individual scholars within the analyses of their fields. After the proceedings of the international Etty Hillesum Congress at Ghent University in November 2008, this Congress volume is the first joined effort by more than twenty Hillesum experts worldwide. It is an absorbing account of international scholarship on the life, works, and vision of the Dutch Jewish writer Etty Hillesum, whose life was shaped by the totalitarian Nazi regime. Hillesum’s diaries and letters illustrate her heroic struggle to come to terms with her personal life in the context of World War II. Building on new interest in theology, philosophy, and psychology, this book revives Hillesum research with a comprehensive rereading of both her published works and lesser-known secondary discourses on her life. The result is fascinating. With the current explosion of interest in inter-religious dialogue, peace studies, Judaism, the holocaust, gender studies, and mysticism, it is clear that this Congress volume will be invaluable to students and scholars in various disciplines.
