Both types of knee-jerk reactions can have lasting and unintended consequences, affecting our friendships, careers, families, and romantic relationships. The truth is, overreacting hurts us as much as it hurts the people around us. You may see overreacting as an unchangeable part of your personality, but in reality, this tendency, like any other, can be unlearned. What does it mean when these patients report the sudden disappearance of afflictions such as cancers, AIDS-related diseases, and cerebral palsy? And what does it mean when people who interact with Dr. Pearl report a sudden ability to access this healing energy not just for themselves, but for others, too? What is this phenomenon? Book Project Everlasting

Download or read book Project Everlasting written by Mathew Boggs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-06-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartwarming and revealing look at the wisdom drawn from successful marriages and the secrets to making love last, not from Ph.D.s or therapists but from more than 200 real couples who have walked the walk to more than forty years of marriage. Jaded by his parents' divorce, Mathew Boggs was a young man who'd lost all belief in lifelong love. After observing his grandparents who were madly in love after sixty-three years of marriage, Mat talked his best friend Jason into joining him on a cross-country search for America's greatest marriages. The two bumbling bachelors jumped in an RV and embarked on "Project Everlasting," a 12,000-mile cross-country adventure to discover what it takes to make love last. Each chapter of Project Everlasting is dedicated to one of the pressing questions the bachelors asked the couples, such as: —"How do you know you've found The One?" —"What's missing from today's marriages?" —"How do you keep the romance alive?" —"What's the most important ingredient for a solid marriage?" As the traveled the country, meeting happy couples from all walks of life, Mat and Jason began to understand why their own relationships hadn't worked out quite as planned. They also realized that what they were learning from their wise new friends could change everything for them and—through Project Everlasting—show their generation and generations to come how to build a marriage to last.

Book Stop Being Niggardly

Download or read book Stop Being Niggardly written by Karen Hunter and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: nig·gard·ly (adj.) [nig´erd-le] 1. stingy, miserly; not generous 2. begrudging about spending or granting 3. provided in a meanly limited supply If you don’t know the definition of the word, you might assume it to be a derogatory insult, a racial slur. You might be personally offended and deeply outraged. You might write an angry editorial or organize a march. You might even find yourself making national headlines In other words, you’d better know what the word means before you pour your energy into overreacting to it. That’s the jumping-off point for this powerful directive from Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and bestselling author Karen Hunter. It’s time for the black community to stop marching, quit complaining, roll up their collective sleeves, channel their anger constructively, and start fixing their own problems, she boldly asserts. And while her straight-talking, often politically incorrect narrative is electrifyingly fresh and utterly relevant to today’s hot-button issues surrounding race, Hunter harks back to the wisdom of a respected elder—Nannie Helen Burroughs, who was ahead of her time penning Twelve Things the Negro Must Do for Himself more than a century ago. Burroughs’s guidelines for successful living—from making education, employment, and home ownership one’s priorities to dressing appropriately to practicing faith in everyday life—teach empowerment through self-responsibility, disallowing excuses for one’s standing in life but rather galvanizing blacks to look to themselves for strength, motivation, support, and encouragement. From our urban communities to small-town America, the issues Hunter is bold enough to tackle in Stop Being Niggardly affect us all. Refreshingly candid and challenging, certain to get people everywhere talking, this is the book that takes on race in a new—yet also historically revered and simply stated—way that can change lives, both personally and collectively.

Book The Art of Abduction

Download or read book The Art of Abduction written by Igor Douven and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel defense of abduction, one of the main forms of nondeductive reasoning. With this book, Igor Douven offers the first comprehensive defense of abduction, a form of nondeductive reasoning. Abductive reasoning, which is guided by explanatory considerations, has been under normative pressure since the advent of Bayesian approaches to rationality. Douven argues that, although it deviates from Bayesian tenets, abduction is nonetheless rational. Drawing on scientific results, in particular those from reasoning research, and using computer simulations, Douven addresses the main critiques of abduction. He shows that versions of abduction can perform better than the currently popular Bayesian approaches—and can even do the sort of heavy lifting that philosophers have hoped it would do. Douven examines abduction in detail, comparing it to other modes of inference, explaining its historical roots, discussing various definitions of abduction given in the philosophical literature, and addressing the problem of underdetermination. He looks at reasoning research that investigates how judgments of explanation quality affect people’s beliefs and especially their changes of belief. He considers the two main objections to abduction, the dynamic Dutch book argument, and the inaccuracy-minimization argument, and then gives abduction a positive grounding, using agent-based models to show the superiority of abduction in some contexts. Finally, he puts abduction to work in a well-known underdetermination argument, the argument for skepticism regarding the external world.

Book excerpt: It was a terrible crossing. The worst yet. There weren't enough boats. I had to stab my way up the gangplank. It was pitch black and the ferryman hadn't an eye in his head. In a house, a young mother watches over her sleeping baby. But in this dark and dangerously funny play, nothing is as it seems. Audrey or Sorrow is a shape-shifting, time-bending deep dive into a world of unimaginable loss. It exemplifies Marina Carr's work: storytelling that pushes the boundaries of love, power and desire. Draw coal. Coal is a beautiful thing. Someday we'll all be coal. A Landmark Productions and Abbey Theatre co-production, it opened at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in February 2024.

Book Purple Hearts and Silver Stars

Download or read book Purple Hearts and Silver Stars written by Janice Josephine Carney and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 I celebrated a year of sobriety and began a journey of rebirth. That year I developed confidence in myself that previously I never experienced. I took my personal collection of notes, diaries, and tapes from my year in Vietnam and begin to organize them into a book. In 1997 I completed the manuscript and titled it One Heart One Mind: one man's memoir of a tour of Vietnam. The book not only dealt with my year in Vietnam but with the emotional cost of the war on my soul and psyche. With assistance from Jonathan Shay M.D., Ph.D., the author of Achilles in Vietnam (a book about combat trauma and the undoing of character), I tried unsuccessfully to get my book published. In 1998 I legally changed my name from John Joseph to Janice Josephine and my writing now included transgender issues. I felt that I had come to terms with my trauma from the Vietnam War, and I was ready to move on. In 1999-2000 I wrote and performed a play "I Was Always Me." The two-act play is a monologue of my transition from John to Janice. In the fall of 2000 I had my first article published in the Transgender Tapestry Magazine. In 2001 I was the subject of a documentary: "TransJan" produced and directed by Katherine Cronin. Its premiere at the Provincetown International Film Festival opened the door for me and after each screening; I conducted a Q&A about transgender issues. The latest screening of "TransJan" was in 2002, when it was selected to be one of the films for the Tampa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. In 2001, in Boston, while performing readings of my poems and rants at Slams, I met the writer Toni Amato. Shortly after that meeting I begin attending Toni's creative writing workshops at Women's Words and later attended one of her weekend writer retreats. That year I presented "TransJan" and sat on panels at the Transcending Boundaries Conference at Yale University and at Speak Out, a conference at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston. My most challenging event that year was the L/B/T/Allies Strategy Summit in Vermont, sponsored by the National Organization for Women. In 2002 I continued to do workshops using creative writing as a means of getting people to open up about transgender issues. I also put together a course of study on transgender issues called "Transsexuals are Human Also." I conducted creative writing workshops at the Midwest L/G/B/T/Allies College Conference. Out of this conference came my transgender monologue,' and, as "My Vagina Monologue," I performed this at the St Petersburg Metropolitan Community Churcher's Talent Show, and it was published in the summer issue of the Transgender Tapestry Magazine. This year I have presented creative writing workshops at the International Foundation for Gender Education in Philadelphia, the New Hampshire Transgender Resources for Education and Empowerment at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, and at Silver Threads, a weekend retreat on St Pete Beach. I have put together a collection of my poems, rants and essays that are directly from a transwoman's heart called "Purple Hearts and Silver Stars." One of my short stories was published as part of Mary Boenke's Trans Forming Families, real stories about transgender loved ones. Later this year two short stories will published in anthologies, Pinned down by Pronouns (http://www.convictionbooks.com) and Trans-lating Faith, Pilgrim Press, 700 Prospect Ave., Cleveland, Ohio. I am an active member of a local group of women artists called "Women Artist Rising" with whom I share my poems, rants and stories at various WAR events (http://www.womenartistsrising.com). My new column "Perspectives from a Trans-woman" that started in a local newsletter is now in syndication.
