Book excerpt: WORDS FROM THE AUTHOR: There is a saying that we recite at the end of every A.A. meeting: "It works if you work it." When Nugi Nichols, "Tahli," was Senior Facilitator in the Greentree program, he wrote an anthem for his "C- Tier Cougars." Within that anthem was a saying: "Information is just information without application." Both sayings led me to understand that if we don't apply action to the things we believe in, then our belief is in vain. As scripture tells us, Faith without works is dead" (James 2:20). There are many people who want results but are not willing to put in the work to achieve them. Anything worth having is worth working for! Within that work comes much struggle, many sacrifices, disappointments and hardships. I've come to learn that when you work hard to attain something, that something is now viewed as having even greater value. Therefore, you will work even harder to maintain and keep it.Right now, at the age of 62, I view everything about me as valuable. During all of my sufferings, my hardships, my failures, and my trials, God brought me through, and everything I was able to bring with me is valuable - a gift from my creator. There was a time in my life when I didn't understand my value, so I sold myself out to a $5.00 bottle of alcohol, a $10.00 bag of heroin, a $20.00 around the world prostitute. I sold my freedom to ignorance, and my soul belonged to the god of this world" (Cor. 4:4). Incarceration became my place of refuge, because God was here and my final words are just like the first: "A LIFE CAN'T CHANGE UNLESS THE HEART CHANGES FIRST, AND THE ONLY ONE I KNOW WHO CAN CHANGE A HEART IS GOD." OPENING STATEMENTS: When I decided to write this book. I thought about all those involved. We all have our own perception of a thing; and, just because I feel, see, or believe a certain way about a thing does not mean that someone else feels, sees, or believes the same. I give to you my understanding of how My Brother's Keeper Mentorship Program came about. I express my state of mind, and who and where I was before My Brother's Keeper was conceived in thought, We never know what treasures may be found in the midst of our experiences; but, I can tell you, my experiences left me filled with jewels. As I traveled on my journey toward the establishment of the My Brother's Keeper Program, I noticed that many of the people picked up along the way came with their own agendas that were contrary to the design and vision already established for the program. Even in the midst of all this, I learned many important lessons. I even learned that the things I began to hate were only "tests" that made me stronger, and all the crazy, defiant, and undermining things being done only showed me who I used to be. I want to take this opportunity to thank every man and woman who appeared in my life throughout this journey, "the good, the bad, and the ugly," because you all have prepared me for the things I am yet to face as I go continue my journey of being My Brother's Keeper. I pray that anyone who reads this book will know that "No Disrespect" is intended to any of the names written herein. This is simply My Brother's Keeper through the eyes and from the heart of Gerald "Honcho" Collins, Co-Founder of a wonderful program and lifestyle.

Book excerpt: When it comes to professional team sports in America, the NFL is king. And where there are NFL players there are NFL agents. Sports agents have been labeled as vultures for their willingness to resort to slimy, underhanded tactics to recruit clients and make deals. Enter NFL agent Eugene Lee, whose ethics are beyond reproach. In My Brother's Keeper, we'll meet players in various stages of their NFL career--from college, to the pros, to life after the game. Eugene takes us into the homes of potential clients, the locker rooms of current clients, and anywhere else an agent must go to keep the dreams of players alive. Above all, we'll get insight into why Eugene has chosen to walk a path of righteousness, conducting business with the same integrity and faith by which he lives. Some say he's a true "Jerry Maguire," but Eugene Lee is an original, a one-of-a-kind personality whose life is just as exciting as the games played by his clients.

Book A Stone of Hope

Download or read book A Stone of Hope written by Jim St. Germain and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of The Other Wes Moore and Just Mercy, a searing memoir and clarion call to save our at-risk youth by a young black man who himself was a lost cause—until he landed in a rehabilitation program that saved his life and gave him purpose. Born into abject poverty in Haiti, young Jim St. Germain moved to Brooklyn’s Crown Heights, into an overcrowded apartment with his family. He quickly adapted to street life and began stealing, dealing drugs, and growing increasingly indifferent to despair and violence. By the time he was arrested for dealing crack cocaine, he had been handcuffed more than a dozen times. At the age of fifteen the walls of the system were closing around him. But instead of prison, St. Germain was placed in "Boys Town," a nonsecure detention facility designed for rehabilitation. Surrounded by mentors and positive male authority who enforced a system based on structure and privileges rather than intimidation and punishment, St. Germain slowly found his way, eventually getting his GED and graduating from college. Then he made the bravest decision of his life: to live, as an adult, in the projects where he had lost himself, and to work to reform the way the criminal justice system treats at-risk youth. A Stone of Hope is more than an incredible coming-of-age story; told with a degree of candor that requires the deepest courage, it is also a rallying cry. No one is who they are going to be—or capable of being—at sixteen. St. Germain is living proof of this. He contends that we must work to build a world in which we do not give up on a swath of the next generation. Passionate, eloquent, and timely, illustrated with photographs throughout, A Stone of Hope is an inspiring challenge for every American, and is certain to spark debate nationwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if your brother was the most controversial figure in the history of the world and your job was to protect him? That's the challenge faced by Rabbi James of Jerusalem, whose kinsman, the Nazarene prophet, Jesus, is stirring debate and anxiety. James' only hope of fulfilling a deathbed promise to his father, Joseph, is his relationship with Pilate, the Roman governor, who turns to James for guidance in matters of Jewish law. Protecting Jesus becomes the focus of James' life as his brother runs afoul of temple authorities, and Zealot rebels attempt to exploit his growing popularity--their goal to foment a revolution against the hated Romans. But even such a widely admired man of honor and learning as James can't calm the fears of change aroused by Jesus and his movement, or counteract the forces of greed, corruption and violence that loom over a nation ready to explode.

Book Finding Silver Lining Through My Brother s Keeper Squad System in the Philippine National Police

This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was anchored on the idea of implementing the "My Brother's Keeper" Squad system in the Philippine National Police as an Internal Cleansing Strategy that aims to prevent police abuses and to identify and weed out defiant PNP personnel, particularly those who are engaged in illegal activities, and impose corrective and punitive measures. It also aims to instill in all PNP personnel a strong sense of commitment, dedication, and responsibility to police work geared towards a Godcentered, service oriented and family-based life. This study attempted to know the effects of implementing the "My Brother's Keeper" squad system to the PNP Personnel of the Hagonoy Municipal Police Station as a corrective strategy for erring PNP personnel. The study adopted an action research and also used descriptive qualitative research designs to picture the effects and challenges of the PNP Personnel in the implementation of such internal cleansing strategy of the PNP. Upon the analysis of this study, there are two themes developed in the implementation of "My Brother's Keeper" squad system in the Philippine National Police: (1) God-centered; and (2) Service-Oriented. The result of the study implied a clear indication that the Squad system emphasizes values formation, spiritual development and strengthening its commitment of its personnel to their profession, however, for every system implemented, it also have challenges to face on. This study also identified some challenges to improve: there are no sufficient time to internalize, no proper venue to conduct the session and hesitations to share that may lead to misunderstanding or conflict of belief/faith.
