Book excerpt: This is a true story of growing up, before, during, and after the Holocaust. It tells about his struggle, not only to survive, but also to keep his true identity throughout those difficult years. This is also an inspirational story that needs to be told. The story narrated through the eyes of a young boy, fascinated by the all the happenings yet unaware of the dangers that surround him. Despite all the fear, humiliation, difficulties of constant movement, changes of identity, separation from his parents, Lubo remains upbeat and positive. The German bombing of Belgrade, and the brutal prosecution of the Jews in Croatia that followed, shatter Lubo's pre-war idyllic life in Zagreb, Croatia. To save their lives Lubo's parents flee to Italy. Not knowing what awaits them, they leave seven year old Lubo with his aunt, married to his Catholic uncle. Two years later, at the age of eight someone informs the Nazis and he is arrested and ready to be sent to the concentration camp in Germany. Through intervention of friends and relatives he is released six hours before the scheduled convoy departure and smuggled to his parents in Italy. The family's relative safety in Treviso, Italy is broken by the German invasion that forces them to flee again to Rome, where the Allies eventually liberate them. After the liberation, Lubo returns to Communist Yugoslavia, emigrates to Israel, and finally arrives to the United States.

Book Running Naked Through the Streets

Download or read book Running Naked Through the Streets written by Caramine White and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008-12-24 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running Naked Through the Streets is an account of the year Dr. Caramine White lived in the former Communist country Slovakia, from August 2004 - May 2005. When Dr. White received a Fulbright Scholarship, she and an American literature professor from a Slovak university 'exchanged' jobs. Dr. White lived in Banska Bystrica, a city of about 84,000 in central Slovakia. Although her students spoke English, very few of the townspeople did, and the living conditions were much different from those enjoyed in America. Running Naked Through the Streets, which refers to the utter helplessness and vulnerability she often felt, is neither an autobiography nor a travel book. Although Dr. White does include some interesting information for tourists, the crux of the book is how being so alone and dependent can encourage and even accelerate personal growth. It is told with a great deal of humor and honesty. Interwoven throughout the text are humorous essays recounting some of her bizarre adventures during the year, which range from belly dancing to marathon running, from inadvertently taking part in a Polish Confirmation ceremony to becoming the object of affection for a mentally challenged homeless man.

Book excerpt: What would it be like to be trapped deep underground for six long years with no hope of rescue or escape? This is a profound question explored deeply in Entombed. And the key point here is that Entombed is inspired by an astonishing true story and real events. Six German soldiers led by Captain Hans von Roth are accidentally buried alive in a vast subterranean stores bunker at the port of Gdynia, Poland, in 1945. At first they believe they will soon be rescued, but as the weeks drag into years it becomes appallingly clear that the men will almost certainly face a terrifying death in the grim darkness that surrounds them. Meanwhile, in Berlin, Hans von Roth’s wife, Erika, is desperately attempting to survive the fall of the city and the Russian hordes destined shortly to occupy it. Facing starvation, massive aerial bombing, Soviet shelling and a host of other dangers, she is also attempting to discover what has become of her lost husband. In Entombed, the author has woven a tale of great love and a desperate struggle for survival like no other. The story literally pushes all the frontiers of human frailty and courage to their very edges.
