Book 8 Keys to End Emotional Eating 8 Keys to Mental Health

Download or read book 8 Keys to End Emotional Eating 8 Keys to Mental Health written by Howard Farkas and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bring an end to emotional eating by getting to the root of the problem. Most books about emotional eating tend to focus on how to strengthen self-restraint or how to identify what triggers it. The former can make the problem worse, while the latter may be different each time it occurs. Both approaches fail to help emotional eaters understand why they feel compelled to do something that they don’t want to do in the first place. This understanding is the key to changing this behavior. Howard Farkas, who has more than two decades of professional and teaching experience as a clinical psychologist specializing in emotional eating, explains the underlying motive that drives the behavior: emotional eating is not a passive failure of self-control, but an active impulse to reject the control of dieting. This defiant need “to be bad” usually leaves the person feeling guilty and anxious about their eating, and recommitting to their diet until the cycle repeats, and the compulsive eating recurs. 8 Keys to End Emotional Eating provides a detailed plan for breaking this pattern. By explaining the root cause that drives the desire to binge, Farkas offers practical skills to help you learn to change your mindset about dieting and end the impulse to binge. His road map for the future will help readers maintain healthy eating habits for years to come.

Book Defensive Shotgun Mastering the Versatility

Download or read book Defensive Shotgun Mastering the Versatility written by Mark James and published by . This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for anyone who understands that the lives of people we love can be irretrievably broken by a home invasion or other deadly force encounter. While many law abiding citizens insure their property, the protection of life against deadly force encounters is often ignored. The probability of becoming the victim of a home invasion or personal assault far outweighs the chances of becoming the victim of a fire. Yet, many people understand their options for protecting against fire better than they comprehend their alternatives for protecting life. As a professional who spends nearly every waking hour focused on protecting life or training others to protect life, I have written this book to present the modern shotgun as a viable defense option for personal safety. This book helps crack the code around the mystery, mystique and often miscommunication about the modern shotgun. It presents tactical applications written so the average citizen or trained operator can understand how to maximize the effectiveness of this incredible tool. The protection of one's life or the life of a loved one is a mindset. The mindset begins with awareness of how quickly one can become a victim of a deadly encounter, and how readily you can prepare to guard against the most dire outcome once awareness becomes part of your daily reality. The modern shotgun is a tool to help you accomplish your personal, team or agency's safety mission. After reading this book and practicing the recommended tactics, you will improve your situational awareness and, with training, you will significantly enhance your ability to protect life in the event of a deadly encounter. Please enjoy the reading and make time to master the techniques at the range. Stay aware, stay focused and stay safe; and may God continue to bless and watch over you and your families.

Book A Beginner s Guide to Japanese Haiku

Download or read book A Beginner s Guide to Japanese Haiku written by William Scott Wilson and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An old pond; a frog jumps in: the sound of water -- Basho This comprehensive introduction to Japan's best-loved haiku poets is the perfect book for anyone wanting to learn about haiku. Compiled and with commentary by renowned author and translator William Scott Wilson, the book features 26 poets and 550 haiku, exquisitely translated. Wilson takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the works of the major Japanese poets from the fifteenth century up to the present. The poets include Basho, Shiki, Buson and Issa (the "Great Four") along with other well-known practitioners of the genre such as Ryokan, Kikaku and Chora. Wilson gives his own brand-new renditions of poems that are already known as classics, and also shares with us the delightful work of a number of poets who are rarely found in English translation, such as six female poets including Chiyojo and Hisajo, as well as novelist Natsume Soseki, who, unbeknown to many, also wrote haiku. The book is divided into sections, each starting with a 2-4 page introduction to each poet, followed by a selection of that poet's haiku, in Japanese script and English translation. Online audio files are available with recordings of the poems in both English and Japanese.

Book Cherry Blossom Epiphany The Poetry and Philosophy of a Flowering Tree

Download or read book Cherry Blossom Epiphany The Poetry and Philosophy of a Flowering Tree written by Robin D. Gill and published by Paraverse Press. This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cherry Blossom Epiphany - the poetry and philosophy of a flowering tree - a selection, translation and lengthy explication of 3000 haiku, waka, senryû and kyôka about a major theme from I.P.O.O.H. (In Praise Of Olde Haiku)by robin d. gill 1. Haiku -Translation from Japanese to English 2. Japanese poetry - 8c-20c - waka, haiku and senryû 3. Natural History - flowering cherries 4. Japan - Culture - Edo Era 5. Nonfiction - Literature 6. Translation - applied 7. You tell me! If the solemn yet happy New Year's is the most important celebration of Japanese (Yamato) ethnic culture, and the quiet aesthetic practice of Moon-viewing in the fall the most elegant expression of Pan-Asian Buddhism=religion, the subject of this book, Blossom-viewing - which generally means sitting down together in vast crowds to drink, dance, sing and otherwise enjoy the flowering cherry in full-bloom - is less a rite than a riot (a word originally meaning an 'uproar'). The major carnival of the year, it is unusual for being held on a date that is not determined by astronomy, astrology or the accidents of history as most such events are in literate cultures. It takes place whenever the cherry trees are good and ready. Enjoyed in the flesh, the blossom-viewing, or hanami, is also of the mind, so much so, in fact, that poetry is often credited with the spread of the practice over the centuries from the Imperial courts to the maids of Edo. Nobles enjoyed link-verse contests presided over by famous poet-judges. Hermits hung poems feting this flower of flowers (to say the generic "flower" = hana in Japanese connotes "cherry!") on strips of paper from the branches of lone trees where only the wind would read them. In the Occident, too, flowers embody beauty and serve as reminders of mortality, but there is no flower that, like the cherry blossom, stands for all flowers. Even the rose, by any name, cannot compare with the sakura in depth and breadth of poetic trope or viewing practice. In Cherry Blossom Epiphany, Robin D. Gill hopes to help readers experience, metaphysically, some of this alternative world. Haiku is a hyper-short (17-syllabet or 7-beat) Japanese poem directly or indirectly touching upon seasonal phenomena, natural or cultural. Literally millions of these ku have been written, some, perhaps, many times, about the flowering cherry (sakura), and the human activity associated with it, blossom-viewing (hanami). As the most popular theme in traditional haiku (haikai), cherry-blossom ku tend to be overlooked by modern critics more interested in creativity expressed with fresh subjects; but this embarrassment of riches has much to offer the poet who is pushed to come up with something, anything, different from the rest and allows the editor to select from what is, for all practical purposes, an infinite number of ku. Literary critics, take note: Like Rise, Ye Sea Slugs! (2003) and Fly-ku! (2004), this book not only explores new ways to anthologize poetry but demonstrates the practice of multiple readings (an average of two per ku) as part of a composite translation turned into an object of art by innovative clustering. Book-collectors might further note that while Cherry Blossom Epiphany may not be hardback, it takes advantage of the many symbols included with Japanese font to introduce design ornamentation (the circle within the circle, the reverse (Buddhist) swastika, etc.) hitherto not found in English language print. It is a one-of-a-kind work of design by the author.
