Book excerpt: A riveting story of a pivotal battle in the Seven Years’ War that changed Canadian history forever. Seventeen-year-old Sébastien de L’Espérance and his friend Guillaume have fought to keep the British from getting a foothold in Île Royale (now Cape Breton Island) ever since the young men came from France two years ago. Britain has blockaded Louisbourg, and supplies for the 4000 inhabitants are running short. Despite Louisbourg’s massive defences, if cut off from supplies provided by France, it cannot survive. Both young men are members of the Compagnies Franches de la Marine. They are sent out on scouting missions that provide valuable information about the British troops — troops which outnumber the French three to one. When British warships arrive in force, Sébastien vows to defend the town, his friend Guillaume, and the woman he loves.

Download or read book A Campaign of Amateurs written by Raymond F. Baker and published by Parks Canada. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the 1745 siege of the Louisbourg fortress on Cape Breton is based on research in the Louisbourg archives. It reviews the reasons for a New England expedition to capture the fortress, the recruitment of a force of essentially unexperienced militia, the state of the French forces and fortifications at Louisbourg, the various stages of the siege, the effects of the attacker's batteries and the French countermeasures, the relations between the various siege commanders, and the eventual surrender of the fortress. The study ends with a discussion of the possible reasons for the outcome. The appendix contains a chronology, a copy of the Massachusetts governor's scheme for attacking Louisbourg, the governor's instructions to the expedition commander, and terms of the surrender of June 1745.

Book excerpt: Louisiana has sixty-four parishes, and many of them are as individual and different as the state itself is different from others in the Union. St. James Parish, a small parish of 249 square miles, is not only one of the oldest settlements in the state, but it is different in its population make-up and is important historically. Cabanocey . . . is a splendid history of the Parish of St. James. . . . Lillian C. Bourgeois captured the spirit that animates the population, which is descended from French, Spanish, Acadian, German, and Creole peoples. Bourgeois writes of the population's customs, beliefs, language differences, and folklore. Cabanocey is not a collection of dry facts and dates; rather, it vividly describes how, more than one hundred years ago, the people of St. James Parish lived, who they were, and what they contributed to their parish and their state. Before the Civil War, St. James Parish was the educational center of Louisiana, and Jefferson College was the first important college in the state. Founded in 1830, it had fine buildings, a well-equipped laboratory, and an impressive library. The Convent of the Sacred Heart (1835) for girls was well-known by prominent families in Louisiana, Mexico, and Central America, who sent their daughters there. Cabanocey contains St. James genealogies and thousands of names of early settlers, including the soldiers, taxpayers, officials, prominent families, and the first settlers and their children. From the early censuses and church and court records, descent is traced for many names. The censuses of 1766, 1769, and 1777 are complete and were obtained from the archives in Seville, Spain.
