Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From early mountain men searching for routes through the Rockies to West Point soldier-engineers conducting topographical expeditions, the exploration of the American West mirrored the development of a fledgling nation. In his Pulitzer Prize-winning Exploration and Empire, William H. Goetzmann analyzes the special role the explorer played in shaping the vast region once called "the Great American Desert." According to Goetzmann, the exploration of the West was not a haphazard series of discoveries, but a planned - even programmed - activity in which explorers, often armed with instructions from the federal government, gathered information that would support national goals for the new lands. As national needs and the frontier's image changed, the West itself was rediscovered by successive generations of explorers, a process that in turn helped shape its culture. Nineteenth-century western exploration, Goetzmann writes, can be divided into three stages. The first, beginning with the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804, was marked by the need to collect practical information, such as the locations of the best transportation routes through the wilderness. Then came the era of settlement and investment - the drive to fulfill the Manifest Destiny of a nation beginning to realize what immense riches lay beyond the Mississippi. The final stage involved a search for knowledge of a different kind, as botanists and paleontologists, ethnographers and engineers hunted intensively for scientific information in the "frontier laboratory." This last phase also saw a rethinking of the West's place in the national scheme; it was a time of nascent conservation movements and public policy discussions aboutthe region's future. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, Goetzmann offers a masterful overview of the opening of the West, as well as a fascinating study of the nature of exploration and its consequences for civilization.

Book Seek Adapt Endure

Download or read book Seek Adapt Endure written by Michael S. Sanders and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-07-25 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today I will do the following: Go forth—I am a disciple. Be useful—I am a servant. Live with purpose—I am a warrior. Discover new lands—I am an explorer. Create joyfully—I am a craftsman. Challenge intentionally—I am a scholar. Be an inspiration—I am a leader. Man was created on purpose and for a purpose. Therefore, all men are at some level searching for purpose and meaning, and yet so many are struggling to find them. If we look deep in our hearts, we all hunger for growth and mastery of ourselves, our strength, and our skill. Unfortunately, many times, our searching leads us to popular movies, media, and society as reliable sources for why and how we should live as men. Could it be that many of the models we look to are creating simple, selfish, empty, small men who don’t really know who they are and are at a terrible risk of missing the robustness of life? The truth is we cannot know who we are until we understand whose we are. We cannot understand our purpose unless we understand our Creator’s purpose. We cannot understand true authentic manhood unless we understand that we carry the image of the only truly authentic man to ever live, Jesus Christ. Man is a special creation that has been blessed with an amazing ability to grow and adapt. Seek. Adapt. Endure. will inspire men to get out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves spiritually, mentally, and physically. The seven archetypes discussed in these pages will help men discover themselves at a deeper level in Jesus, find fulfillment in life, realize their full potential, and discover ways to go forth into the world in order to pay that forward to their families, communities, and workplaces. 2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DescriptionComplimenting the narrative of his Chipmunka debut "Victim of Dreams," his memoir of his childhood in Canada and adult descent into bipolar illness, and eventual exploration of and recovery from it, "Bipolar Reflections: Light on Water" is by turns mystical, spiritual - even cynical - but never mediocre or passive. Some of it is indeed the voice of dreams but more of it is the authentic expression of a gifted writer determined to express himself because of and in spite of an illness that has colonised but never conquered him. "Bipolar Reflections: Light on Water" is, in the end, about life, and the ways some of us live it, aware of death, feeling close to God, but mostly true to its impulse to create. About the AuthorJeremy Gluck, born late 1958, is an expatriate Canadian who, with a parallel, successful life in the arts, is now involved in the voluntary mental health sector. "Bipolar Reflections: Light on Water" compiles poetry and prose written before, during and after the diagnosis that introduced him to the reality of his mental illness and the journey since that has taken him through and beyond many ideas and experiences comprising a recovery the discoveries of which form the backbone of his Chipmunka book, "A Definitive Guide to Mental Health Recovery."

These topics are discussed in this entertaining, informative novel filled with action and adventure as well as glamour, romance and international intrigue. When the renowned young oceanographer Cordelia Stapleton receives an invitation to accept an award on behalf of her great-great-grandfather, a famous Victorian polar explorer, she has no idea her life is about to change dramatically. John Sinclair—a dashing, wealthy archaeologist and philanthropist—presents Cordelia with the award at the glamorous Oceanographic Institute Ball in Monaco. He also gives her a journal that her greatgreat- grandfather wrote in 1908. An orphan with very few family belongings, Cordelia is amazingly touched to have this precious heirloom. Once the journal is in her possession, Cordelia learns that she is heir to the land on which the Global Seed Vault in Norway sits. The valuable deed for this land, or at least a clue to its whereabouts, may be hidden in the journal. When the journal disappears from Cordelia’s stateroom on the Queen Victoria and Cordelia receives threatening e-mails, it becomes clear that she is in danger. John Sinclair comes to Cordelia’s aid, helping her search for the missing journal and land deed, and capturing her heart. As they race to find the deed, Cordelia and Sinclair encounter a team of British virologists trying to decode the genome of the 1918 influenza pandemic, but unearthing infected tissue samples may prove more lethal than curative. Cordelia and Sinclair sail through the Mediterranean from Monaco to an archaeological site in Ephesus, Turkey. They travel to a beautiful old Parisian home and a lavish estate in the British countryside. Their search culminates in the high Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, not far from the North Pole. Behind them every step of the way are a consortium of Russian underworld criminals, religious fanatics from Texas, a sinister botanist, and a sexy American spy, all hunting for the deed, all pursuing Cordelia. The Explorer’s Code is a satisfying blend of historical detail, fast-paced action, scientific discovery, and the thrill of exploration that informs as well as entertains. The breathtaking ending in the high Arctic is as chilling as a polar breeze.
