Book Sexual Identity and Lesbian Family Life

Download or read book Sexual Identity and Lesbian Family Life written by Iris Erh-Ya Pai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book illustrates how Taiwanese lesbians negotiate their lives outside patriarchal families, while seeking varying ways to maintain working relationships with their families of origin, as their notion of family distinguishes them from same sex couples in other countries. This ambivalence has a strong influence on their relational decisions as they deal with contradictions between family ties, filial piety and lesbianism. Based on individual and couple interviews with self-identified lesbian couples in stable relationships, the book offers vivid narratives of different ways in which Taiwanese lesbians have been able to make sense of their families without recognition by legislation or their families of origin. Specific issues in Taiwan raised in the book challenge the taken-for-granted understandings of same-sex relationships and review the dramatic transformations that have profoundly changed womens' position. It also offers a sensitive analysis of GLBT issues and heteronormativity, arguing that Chinese familialism can cohabite with lesbianism in the context of contemporary Taiwan.

He’s gone straight, and he’s happy with that…sort of. When he runs into an old pal, Jess finds himself taking money (and pride) from a well-heeled drug dealer. But things get twisted. On the journey that follows, Jess discovers you can’t escape what you are, especially when there’s cash for the taking. There are three kinds of fool in this life—the lost, the guilty, and the dead. But who the heck is who? Praise for THREE KINDS OF FOOL: “Reminiscent of Irvine Welsh’s Crime but with that Southern Californian feel that only sex, guns, drugs, murder and surfboards can bring to the party…” —Grant Nicol, author of A Place To Bury Strangers “Three Kinds of Fool starts off with a bang and never lets up.” —Craig Faustus Buck, author of Go Down Hard “Jess has gotten himself neck deep in some serious sh*t...I quite enjoyed Three Kinds of Fool.” —David Nemeth at UnlawfulActs.net “[Phillips] paints sharp, cutting scenes...He peppers the action with tight quips, imagining a very true world through a very discerning set of eyes.” —Tim Learn, author of the Chewy Noh series

Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Biography. Middle Eastern Studies. In this memoir, Nancy Agabian tells stories of growing pains, family tensions, and buried pasts. In a narrative that braids together different times and places and shifts between comic and dramatic registers, Agabian tells us how, as a child, she learns to juggle roles in response to competing pressures to fit in as an American while maintaining her Armenian heritage. At home, she struggles with her grandmother's old ideologies, arguments between her parents, and heated discussions about race and sexuality. In her twenties, Agabian moves to Hollywood and becomes a performance artist and begins to discover herself sexually, dating both men and women. After hiding her autobiographical shows from her relatives, she finally decides to confront her family history and takes a trip to Armenia with her artist aunt, during which she finds she must reckon with painful family histories involving displacement and genocide.
