Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • “Colonel Roosevelt is compelling reading, and [Edmund] Morris is a brilliant biographer who practices his art at the highest level. . . . A moving, beautifully rendered account.”—Fred Kaplan, The Washington Post This biography by Edmund Morris, the Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winning author of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex, marks the completion of a trilogy sure to stand as definitive. Of all our great presidents, Theodore Roosevelt is the only one whose greatness increased out of office. What other president has written forty books, hunted lions, founded a third political party, survived an assassin’s bullet, and explored an unknown river longer than the Rhine? Packed with more adventure, variety, drama, humor, and tragedy than a big novel, yet documented down to the smallest fact, this masterwork recounts the last decade of perhaps the most amazing life in American history. “Hair-raising . . . awe-inspiring . . . a worthy close to a trilogy sure to be regarded as one of the best studies not just of any president, but of any American.”—San Francisco Chronicle

Download or read book A Hell for Heroes written by Theo Knell and published by Coronet. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore Knell went through hell in the SAS - but his biggest battle began when he left. A Hell for Heroes is a searingly honest autobiography about what life in the military service is really like. This is my life story and the story of my time in the SAS. I hope that any soldier who reads it will find some sort of connection with their own. I have tried to share my experiences honestly, and as such all of the incidents portrayed within this book are true, some so dark and painful that I often questioned whether I wanted to remain part of the human race.I hope it will provide you an insight into the life and mind of a soldier - what makes us the way we are, what drives us on when other men would fold, what binds us together like no other brotherhood on earth, what makes us laugh and what scares us shitless.Watching men die violently for the first time is not something I would wish on any young man. Yes, many who have not served will say 'It will make a man out of you son'. but what do they know? In reality it will destroy far more men than it makes, leaving many dead or crippled for life, some with wounds you can see, but far more with wounds which you cannot.

Download or read book Heaven in the Orchard written by Ted Auble and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncovering the deeper spiritual meaning underlying everyday events, Heaven in the Orchard, by Father Ted Auble, presents a collection of stories and recollections. He draws on reflections from a wealth of personal experiences with his faith as a theology student at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium; as a Peace Corps volunteer in South Korea; and as a priest ordained to minister in the diocese of Rochester, New York. Each reflection, a standalone piece, uses personal anecdotes to illustrate how God works in the lives of Christians. The vignettes, introduced with quotes from scripture, address an array of topics that are on the minds of many in todays world, such as hunger, change, identity, sibling rivalry, gratitude, leadership, gluttony, parenting, and more. Auble uses these stories to provide direction on living a faith-filled life. Insightful and inspiring, Heaven in the Orchard helps Christians find comfort and guidance in the Bible. Each selection is an invitation to examine the seeds of ones own experiences to discover the rich life that lies hidden beneath the surface.

Download or read book Modernism and the Aesthetics of Violence written by Paul Sheehan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-24 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion that violence can give rise to art - and that art can serve as an agent of violence - is a dominant feature of modernist literature. In this study Paul Sheehan traces the modernist fascination with violence to the middle decades of the nineteenth century, when certain French and English writers sought to celebrate dissident sexualities and stylized criminality. Sheehan presents a panoramic view of how the aesthetics of transgression gradually mutates into an infatuation with destruction and upheaval, identifying the First World War as the event through which the modernist aesthetic of violence crystallizes. By engaging with exemplary modernists such as Joyce, Conrad, Eliot and Pound, as well as lesser-known writers including Gautier, Sacher-Masoch, Wyndham Lewis and others, Sheehan shows how artworks, so often associated with creative well-being and communicative self-expression, can be reoriented toward violent and bellicose ends.
