Download or read book All of Us in Our Own Lives written by Manjushree Thapa and published by Freehand Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautiful story of strangers who shape each other’s lives in fateful ways, All of Us in Our Own Lives delves deeply into the lives of women and men in Nepal and into the world of international aid. Ava Berriden, a Canadian lawyer, quits her corporate job in Toronto to move to Nepal, from where she was adopted as a baby. There she struggles to adapt to her new career in international aid and forge a connection with the country of her birth. Ava’s work brings her into contact with Indira Sharma, who has ambitions of becoming the first Nepali woman director of a NGO; Sapana Karki, a bright young teenager living a small village; and Gyanu, Sapana’s brother, who has returned home from Dubai to settle his sister’s future after their father’s death. Their journeys collide in unexpected ways. All of Us in Our Own Lives is a stunning, keenly observant novel about human interconnectedness, about privilege, and about the ethics of international aid (the earnestness and idealism and yet its cynical, moneyed nature).

Book On the Existence of the Self

Download or read book On the Existence of the Self written by Chittaranjan Naik and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-08-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today most scientists and philosophers have come to regard the notion of the self as a kind of illusion, as a theoretical construct similar to the notion we have of the center of gravity. There are two reasons for this phenomenon: the first is due to the view propagated by the empirical sciences that all things in the universe, including the presence of consciousness, can be explained solely from physical causes; and the second is due to the philosophical arguments marshaled against substance ontology by David Hume and Emmanuel Kant and the consequent discarding of the idea of self as substance. This book confronts both these views – in two separate parts of the book - and shows them to be untenable. It provides a fresh proof of the self’s existence by demonstrating that the goal-oriented actions of living beings cannot be explained solely through the laws of physics and that these actions point to a unique power possessed by the self, known in Indian philosophy as kriya-shakti. This proof, along with the Direct Perception Theory presented by the author in his ground-breaking first book ‘Natural Realism and Contact Theory of Perception’, effectively dismantles the idea that the physical universe forms a causal closure and open the doors to a domain of knowledge beyond empirical science.

Book excerpt: Elegant, perceptive, and startlingly prophetic, Nehru: A Contemporary’s Estimate is one of the finest accounts of Nehru ever written. Walter Crocker, the Australian high commissioner to India, admired Nehru the man—his grace, style, intelligence and energy—and was deeply critical of many of his political decisions—the invasion of Goa, India’s Kashmir policy, the Five Year Plans. This book, written shortly after Nehru’s death, is full of invaluable first hand observations about the man and his politics. Many of Crocker’s points, too—especially the implications of the Five Year Plans and of the introduction of democracy to India—are particularly relevant today. Out of print for many years, this classic biography has been reissued with an authoritative foreword by Ramachandra Guha.

Book Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa

Download or read book Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa written by Hans Reihling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa explores how different masculinities modulate substance use, interpersonal violence, suicidality, and AIDS as well as recovery cross-culturally. With a focus on three male protagonists living in very distinct urban areas of Cape Town, this comparative ethnography shows that men's struggles to become invulnerable increase vulnerability. Through an analysis of masculinities as social assemblages, the study shows how affective health problems are tied to modern individualism rather than African 'tradition' that has become a cliché in Eurocentric gender studies. Affective health is conceptualized as a balancing act between autonomy and connectivity that after colonialism and apartheid has become compromised through the imperative of self-reliance. This book provides a rare perspective on young men's vulnerability in everyday life that may affect the reader and spark discussion about how masculinities in relationships shape physical and psychological health. Moreover, it shows how men change in the face of distress in ways that may look different than global health and gender-transformative approaches envision. Thick descriptions of actual events over the life course make the study accessible to both graduate and undergraduate students in the social sciences. Contributing to current debates on mental health and masculinity, this volume will be of interest to scholars from various disciplines including anthropology, gender studies, African studies, psychology, and global health.
