Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hysteria and Certain Allied Conditions: Their Nature and Treatment, With Special Reference to the Application of the Rest Cure, Massage, Electrotherapy, Hypnotism, Etc At this day, when the fecundity of the medical press is so great, it behooves an author to offer a reason, an excuse, or an apology for bringing forth a new book. In regard to this volume there are two reasons that may, perhaps, be deemed sufficiently weighty to warrant its appearance. The first of these reasons is too obvious to require elaboration; namely, the importance of the subject. Every day in his rounds the physician meets with some phase of hysteria. Sometimes the diagnosis can be made at the threshold of the door, but at other times it is difficult in the extreme - a common disease, often a puzzling disease, always difficult to manage. The second reason is that, while there exists an immense amount of literature on hysteria, there is no recent book in English on the subject. Of course, it is treated of in works on general medicine, but rarely with the minuteness that the importance of the subject warrants. Book The Nature of Hysteria

Download or read book The Nature of Hysteria written by Niel Micklem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hysteria was a frequently diagnosed illness in the West through the nineteenth and much of the twentieth century. Today the medical profession has virtually abandoned the diagnosis altogether. However, this does not mean that hysteria has ceased to exist. In The Nature of Hysteria, Niel Micklem argues that the disease has merely shifted into other personal and collective forms. He traces the history of hysteria from ancient Egyptian times to the present and examines its mythic background. He also describes the involvement of sexuality in the clinical manifestations of hysteria to witchcraft, and various collective manifestations of hysteria in the form of sexual permissiveness and unisexual behaviour. Arguing that hysteria is much more than an illness, Niel Micklem suggests that the denial of hysteria in individual patients has coincided with the creation of an increasingly hysterical society.

Book Approaching Hysteria

Download or read book Approaching Hysteria written by Mark S. Micale and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does this burgeoning corpus of writing tell us? Why, in recent years, has the history of hysterical disorders carried such resonance for commentators in the sciences and humanities? What can we learn from the textual traditions of hysteria about writing the history of disease in general? What is the broader cultural meaning of the new hysteria studies? In the second half of the book, Micale discusses the many historical "cultures of hysteria." He reconstructs in detail the past usages of the hysteria concept as a powerful, descriptive trope in various nonmedical domains, including poetry, fiction, theater, social thought, political criticism, and the arts. His book is a pioneering attempt to write the historical phenomenology of disease in an age preoccupied with health, and a prescriptive remedy for writing histories of disease in the future.

The book also ponders on the use of magnetism in Paris hospitals and lucid somnambule. The text takes a look at the developments in hypnotism, epilepsy, and hysteria in Germany, including the influence of magnetism on the intellectual life of the country, the Odylic Force, and the use of magnetism on Friedericke Hauffe. The book also expounds on the transition from magnetism to hypnotism. Discussions focus on phrenomagnetism, animal experiments, famous somnambulists, occultism and spiritualism, increasing use of fraud, and decline of magnetism. Speech and command automatism and artificial hallucinations are also discussed. The publication is a valuable source of data for readers interested in the relationships of hypnotism, hysteria, and epilepsy.

Download or read book Hysteria Beyond Freud written by Sander L. Gilman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "She's hysterical." For centuries, the term "hysteria" has been used by physicians and laymen to diagnose and dismiss the extreme emotionality and mysterious physical disorders presumed to bedevil others—especially women. How did this medical concept assume its power? What cultural purposes does it serve? Why do different centuries and different circumstances produce different kinds of hysteria? These are among the questions pursued in this absorbing, erudite reevaluation of the history of hysteria. The widely respected authors draw upon the insights of social and cultural history, rather than Freudian psychoanalysis, to examine the ways in which hysteria has been conceived by doctors and patients, writers and artists, in Europe and North America, from antiquity to the early years of the twentieth century. In so doing, they show that a history of hysteria is a history of how we understand the mind. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology.
