Book Existential Hypnotherapy

Download or read book Existential Hypnotherapy written by Mark King and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1993-09-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existential philosophy provides a useful theoretical foundation for sucessful hynotherapy because it stresses the importance of the client's experience over any preconceived notions or diagnoses. By using the client's reality as the basis of clinical work, the therapist can help the client break self-destructive habits and maintain healthy patterns of behavior without relying solely on behavioral techniques. Presenting an innovative approach to psychotherapy that is firmly rooted in philosophy, Existential Hypnotherapy bridges the gap between technique and theory. Addressing theoretical themes, the book's initial chapters discuss significant issues for psychotherapy in general, and hypnotherapy in particular, with special attention paid to the nature of diagnosis and concepts of addiction. Chapters introduce the reader to the work of various existential philosophers, including Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Sartre. Bound to stir controversy, the authors persuasively argue that hypnosis should not be considered a "state" or "altered consciousness," and that there is no such thing as self-hypnosis. Instead, they demonstrate that all clinical hypnosis belongs to the therapist-patient dialogue. The book then focuses on specific hypnotherapy techniques that may be linked to desired therapeutic outcomes. These strategies include ways to help patients manage anxiety, and empower them to make needed life changes; methods for illuminating the existential meaning of symptoms to help patients break bad habits; and the utilizization of patients' metaphors in treatment. Also discussed is the inadequacy of measurement scales that are supposed to determine a patient's ability to be hypnotized. Unique and thought-provoking, Existential Hypnotherapy is an important guide for any practitioner in the mental health field who uses clinical hynosis as a tool, regardless of his or her training or orientation. Providing an accessible review of the basic principles of existential thought, it is also useful for instructors and students using philosophy to ground their psychological work.

A major focus of the book is that the therapist does not necessarily need to be familiar with the sport or activity to serve as a "mental coach" to the athlete. The athlete is instructed that the goal is not to improve the mechanics of their performance (that is left up to their coaches) but, rather, to help them to relax, concentrate and focus so that they fulfill their maximum potential. They learn not to let the mental side of their game trip up the physical side, but rather to enhance it.

Book Addiction and the Vulnerable Self

Download or read book Addiction and the Vulnerable Self written by Edward J. Khantzian and published by Scholastic. This book was released on 1990-08-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harvard Cocaine Recovery Project, a National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded randomized clinical trial, was initiated in 1986 to compare different approaches for treating cocaine abusers. Modified Dynamic Group Therapy (MDGT), one of the models used in the study, is a short-term supportive-expressive psychodynamic group approach specifically adapted for cocaine addicts. While many previous studies of substance abuse treatment were compromised by extraordinarily high dropout rates, this approach retained nearly 70% of group members for the entire length of treatment. This book describes MDGT and provides a practical guide to implementation. Based on an understanding of the psychological vulnerabilities of addicts, the MDGT model addresses the modifications in psychodynamic technique that are necessary for addicts' needs. It focuses on four main areas of difficulty involving self-regulation; affect, self-esteem, relationship, and self-care problems. Both supportive and expressive, the approach helps group members identify, process, and modify the characterological traits that mask addict's vulnerabilities. With this approach, a well-led group can heighten self-esteem, improve self-care, combat feelings of isolation and shame, and strengthen the individual's capacity for positive change. Concomitant involvement with an individual therapist/counselor is encouraged as a means to support and facilitate the group therapy, especially early in group treatment, and to maintain a flexible individual and group treatment context for self-exploration and understanding. Bringing the model to life are detailed vignettes and transcripts of groups in different phases of recovery. These cases demonstrate techniques, illustrate technical issues, and illuminate major themes that unfold during treatment.
