Book Hymns of the Church Universal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hymns of the Church Universal Classic Reprint written by Henry Wilder Foote and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Church Universal Besides the many well-known tunes by Barnby, there are about twenty by him that have been reprinted very little, if at all, and that are associated with no especial names; these have been numbered for convenience, and have been also given names, for the purpose of easier identification. No alterations have been made in either melody or harmony; but it often was found out of the question to obtain the origi nal form in which tunes were written, as so many of them have been tampered with in the course of time. In such cases the attempt was made to get as near to the original as possible, and at any rate to have the harmonization correct. Three tunes had to be changed (though not in melody or harmony) to fit the hymns; they are Peace, by Elvey, Amsterdam (hymns 315 and and Mary Magdalene, by Dykes. One thing, however, has been done, which it is hoped will be justified by the result, - the transposition of a large number of tunes to a lower key, to fit them better for congregational singing. There are many in common use that lie too high for average voices, at least for unison singing. To take two instances, Amsterdam and Bethany become comfortable, instead of almost impossible for congregational use, by lowering their pitch a tone. Many organists habitually transpose such tunes in prac tice, and it seemed better to print them in that manner. Book Hymns of the Church Universal

Download or read book Hymns of the Church Universal written by John Rylands and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-22 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Church Universal: In Two Parts: I. The Spirit of the Psalms, II. General Hymns As a contribution to a study which in our days has become of in creasing interest both on literary and on devotional grounds, Mr. And Mrs. Rylands now offer the volume to their friends. They have no intention of publishing it; but, at the same time, would make grateful acknowledgment to those authors and holders of copyrights who have permitted the free use of their works. In the prosecution of the task of selection, it has been very interesting to note the way in which common consent has fixed upon certain Hymns as specially adapted for congregational praise. It is not always easy to say on what special quality in the Hymns chosen this unanimity is based; and, instead of criticism, it may be useful to indicate the Hymns themselves, as among the best known, the most commonly employed, and the clearest treasures Of the Christian Church. This is in accord with the ancient custom of the Church and the habit of an increasing number of Churches which find great spiritual helpfulness in the observance of the different seasons of the Church year. Whenever it is genuine, it is the natural and spontaneous utterance of a mind possessed by the conception of the infinite relations in which we stand, and aspiring towards a point of new worthy of their solemnity. And though it breathes forth the deepest and greatest of desires, it is essentially an end, and not a means and, like the embrace of friendship, or the kiss of domestic affection, loses all its meaning, when adopted from conviction of its reasonableness, or 'with a view to personal advantage. Book Methodist Free Church Hymns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Methodist Free Church Hymns Classic Reprint written by United Methodist Free Churches and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Free Church Hymns Not less earnestly has the Committee endeavoured, in the inclusion of new hymns, to provide for the glad and grateful expression of praise. It is still, it will always be 'a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.' In all ages praise has been the universal lan guage of the children of God, and He reveals Himself in response, when they draw nigh to Him with songs of thanksgiving. Thus, at the dedication of the temple, when they lifted up their voices, the glory of the Lord filled the House of God and the great multitude which no man can number, ' with 'the voice of many waters, ' sing the new song unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and to the Lamb for ever and ever.' The compilers have also striven, by the choice of suitable hymns, and through the classification and arrangement of the whole book, to stimulate the manifestation of practical Christianity, and to supply a medium for the devout utterance of the varied emotions and experiences of the Christian life. Many hymns are comprised, that, to those who are afflicted, and to those in suffering and sorrow, will be full of consolation, and will be welcome as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.' Book Hymns Historically Famous Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hymns Historically Famous Classic Reprint written by Nicholas Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns Historically Famous The purpose of this volume is twofold: To in epire a warmer love of Church song; and to make the reader better acquainted with that class of hymns which are noted for the history they have made. The special aim has been to take the more popular and useful of our familiar compositions and give a fuller and more connected story of the lives of the authors, the origin of the hymns, with incidents of interest and value illustrating their influence, than have yet appeared in any annotated hymnal either in America or Great Britain. Twenty-three chapters are devoted to Church hymns and gospel songs which have two common characteristics universal popularity, and the power to make spiritual history. Many hymns are historic solely because their origin is closely related to some striking event, or associated with some hallowed experience; and the rule governing the scope of the book has been re laxed that a few of those having particular merit, might be annotated. The chapter - Five Lay Hymn Writers - was inserted for two important reasons First, the position those consecrated laymen occupy in Church hymnody in all English-speaking coun tries, is unique; and, second, the hymns selected from their writings and printed in these pages, are of great poetic beauty, and add much to the pleasure and profitof public worship. There are many favorite hymns which are perfect in form, exquisite in thought and expression, and which no doubt interpret charming Christian experiences, but not being connected with noteworthy historical facts, they could not properly find a place in this volume. Book The Best Church Hymns Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Best Church Hymns Classic Reprint written by Louis Fitzgerald Benson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Best Church Hymns This little book had its origin in two papers prepared at the request of the editor of The Sunday School Times, and printed in that journal in the autumn of 1897. They are now, by his courteous permission, substantially reproduced here. As there recorded, the collation covered ninety-eight hymn-books, and is now brought down to cover nine more not then at hand or since published. It is interesting to note that this enlargement of the material effected no change in the list of the best hymns, except in some cases a change in their relative order, and the addition of one more hymn to their fellowship. But the better part of the book is the hymns themselves. As far as practicable they are printed as their authors wrote them; such accepted alterations as it seemed necessary to adopt being referred to in the notes. Book Hymns for the Church and Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hymns for the Church and Home Classic Reprint written by William Fleming Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns for the Church and Home Editor has been guided not only by the merits of the hymn, but by its subject. Many hymns have been excluded, not because they are inferior to those that were adopted, but because the subject was already sufficiently illustrated, and some, be cause, however admirable, they were not so simple as that the poor and unleamed of the congregation could make them their own. In the hymns for Family and Private Worship, this rule has not been so strictly followed, and the line between the two parts has not been so rigidly drawn but that some hymns in each will be found admissible in the other. A place has also been found here for some which, however broad and congregational in their character, yet, being translations and in unfamiliar metres, have not become rooted among us; and one or two, such as 427, would have been inserted in the first part, but that it was already in type. The hymns for Children have been separately numbered, to prevent those who use them from being puzzled by what would otherwise have been the highest figures; but they are an integral part of the book, from which they are not intended to be detached, and which necessarily includes in its other divisions hymns which children ought to know.
