Book excerpt: These hymns, the Magnificat, Benedictus and Nunc Dimittis, are a familiar part of Christian liturgy; but their origin is uncertain, their meaning debated and their significance within Luke-Acts often ignored. This monograph argues that they were composed in Hebrew by Jewish-Christian poets, and were incorporated by the evangelist as anticipating certain key themes of his own work.

  • ISBN : 1666787337
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book The Hymns of Saint Luke written by Richard J. Dillon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four canticles of Luke's birth story--the Magnificat, Benedictus, Gloria in excelsis, and Nunc dimittis--are taken to be integral components of the narrative and a sustained lyrical prelude to the author's two-volume historical work. Each composition is analyzed in three steps: proximate context; text; and macrocontext, the last displaying, in each case, a graded contribution to the cumulative preview of Luke's overall argument that the songs constitute. The summary impression made by this argument is of the author's decisive role in the creation of these passages, of which--save, perhaps, for the Benedictus--his is the originating hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last days of the twentieth century, leading New Testament scholar and popular preacher Daniel Harrington, S.J., asked himself two powerful questions: What might the church of the first century have to say to the church of the twenty-first century? And How might a brief sythesis of what the New Testament says and does not say about the church help bring greater vitality within and unity among the churches? The result of Father Harrington's research and thinking is this timely and important book.

Book Early Narrative Christology The Lord in the Gospel of Luke

Download or read book Early Narrative Christology The Lord in the Gospel of Luke written by C. Kavin Rowe and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the striking frequency with which the Greek word kyrios, Lord, occurs in Luke's Gospel, this study is the first comprehensive analysis of Luke's use of this word. The analysis follows the use of kyrios in the Gospel from beginning to end in order to trace narratively the complex and deliberate development of Jesus' identity as Lord. Detailed attention to Luke's narrative artistry and his use of Mark demonstrates that Luke has a nuanced and sophisticated christology centered on Jesus' identity as Lord.

Book Teaching Through Song in Antiquity

Download or read book Teaching Through Song in Antiquity written by Matthew E. Gordley and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2011 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While scholars of antiquity have long spoken of didactic hymns, no single volume has defined or explored this phenomenon across cultural boundaries in antiquity. In this monograph Matthew E. Gordley provides a broad definition of didactic hymnody and examines how didactic hymns functioned at the intersection of historical circumstances and the needs of a given community to perceive itself and its place in the cosmos and to respond accordingly. Comparing the use of didactic hymnody in a variety of traditions, this study illuminates the multifaceted ways that ancient hymns and psalms contributed to processes of communal formation among the human audiences that participated in the praise either as hearers or active participants. The author finds that in Greek, Roman, Jewish, and Christian contexts, many hymns and prayers served a didactic role fostering the ongoing development of a sense of identity within particular communities.

  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2023-03-27
  • ISBN : 9004540288

Download or read book Luke the Chronicler written by Mark Giacobbe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a fresh understanding of the literary composition of Luke-Acts. Picking up on the ancient practice of literary mimesis, the author argues that Luke’s two-part narrative is subtly but significantly modeled on the two-part narrative found in the books of Samuel-Kings and Chronicles. Specifically, Luke’s gospel presents Jesus as the promised, ultimate Davidide, while the Book of Acts presents the disciples of Jesus as the heirs of the kingdom of David. In addition to the proposal concerning the composition of Luke-Acts, the book offers compelling insights on the genre of Luke-Acts and the purpose of Acts.
