Book A Study of the Wetlands of Southern Part of Nadia District in West Bengal India

Download or read book A Study of the Wetlands of Southern Part of Nadia District in West Bengal India written by Mitrajit Chatterjee and published by Walnut Publication. This book was released on 2021-07-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are generally highly productive ecosystems, providing various important benefits to the environment. These benefits are mainly flood control, groundwater recharge, and pollution reduction as wetlands act as aquatic filtering systems. Wetland ecosystems are multilateral ecosystems that provide substantial benefits to society through their numerous functions and services. However, their important role in maintaining the economy of their regions is not properly perceived, and almost all wetlands in India are endangered due to a lack of appreciation of their role. Among the common people as well as the stakeholders, there is a lot of misconception regarding the real picture of natural resources and their proper utilization. This communication gap can be cleared up through the micro-level study. From this point of view, the author has selected a medium-sized area, only 1132.20 km2 consisting of five Community Development Blocks viz. Santipur, Ranaghat-I, Ranaghat-II, Chakdah, and Haringhata of the Southern Part of Nadia District (SPND). The present volume focuses on the nature, evolution, and utilization of wetlands of the area and assesses their potentialities for the socio-economic development of the area. The book has systematically presented the fundamental details, discussion, analysis, and conclusion in 4 chapters. The study has been enriched with 8 maps and diagrams, 5 tables, and 9 photographs. The study is new for several reasons and in its humble way, it is a contribution to the field of applied geomorphology and environmental geography. To what extent has the present work succeeded is the subject to be judged by the readers.

Book excerpt: The Bhagirathi-Hooghly Basin in India is one of the most densely populated regions in the world and is undergoing rapid transformation of its natural landscape induced by human interventions, such as mushrooming of dams and barrages, deforestation, and urbanization. Human activities and interventions on basin landforms and the processes that shape those landforms have accelerated at an alarming rate. This book uses spatio-temporal analysis to understand the major anthropogenic signatures on land use and land cover changes and the impact these activities have on the landforms and processes of the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River and its sub-basins. It answers the what, where, why, and how of the anthropogenic signatures involved. Recent case studies on the impact of anthropogenic signatures on fluvial forms and processes make this book a useful resource for students and researchers in the earth sciences, local governments, urban planners, and all concerned with rural developments. Features: Explores for the first time the new concept of anthropogeomorphology for the river basin—an emerging field Analyses the impact of anthropogenic activities, especially the construction of dams and reservoirs, and urbanization on major fluvial landscapes using advanced geospatial modelling techniques Investigates human interference in river systems, their effects on the dynamics of the river, and the livelihoods of the people residing along the river Addresses issues related to geology, geomorphology, geography, planning, land use, and land management areas Fills the need for data-driven governance and policy decisions for the future of urban-industrial growth in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time immemorial the Bengal Delta had been an important maritime des- nation for traders from all parts of the world. The actual location of the port of call varied from time to time in line with the natural hydrographic changes. From the early decades of the second millennium AD, traders from the European con- nent also joined the traders from the Arab countries, who had been the Forerunners in maritime trading with India. Daring traders and fortune seekers from Denmark, Holland, Belgium and England arrived at different ports of call along the Hooghly river. The river had been, in the meantime, losing its pre-eminence as the main outlet channel of the sacred Ganga into the Bay of Bengal, owing to a shift of ?ow towards east near Rajmahal into the Padma, which had been so long, carried very small part of the large volume of ?ow. On a cloudy afternoon on August 24, 1690 the British seafarer Job Charnock rested his oars at Kolkata and started a new chapter in the life of a sleepy village, bordering the Sunderbans which was ‘a tangled region of estuaries, rivers and water courses, enclosing a vast number of islands of various shapes and sizes. ’ and infested with a large variety of wild animals. In the language of the British Nobel Laureate (1907) Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936). ???? ???? Thus the midday halt of Charnock grew a city.

Book Estuarine Morphodynamics of the Sunderbans

Download or read book Estuarine Morphodynamics of the Sunderbans written by Gautam Kumar Das and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of rigorous and continuous research work done by the author over about three decades on the open ecosystem and dynamic environment of the estuarine Sunderbans. The objective of this work is to identify the field and factors changing gradually upon this active delta over the years, decades and centuries. The deltaic Sunderbans yet not mature enough, has been changing in its natural course with time. Further, anthropogenic interferences disturb the environments and accelerate degradation of nature of this fragile ecosystem simultaneously. Roles played by almost all the agents including man and environment and their involvement are identified for the changing environmental scenario of the Sunderbans. The book is befitted for the researchers and students for the post graduate levels. The Sunderbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering parts of Bangladesh and the southern tip of Indian state of West Bengal, is a part of world's largest deltaic plain of fluvio-marine deposit formed by the Ganges and Brahmaputra at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal. It is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world, conspicuous for its great size and biodiversity. With an enormous network of channels and creeks, tidal inundation twice daily, Sunderbans mangroves wetland is a dynamic and complex ecosystem, which undergoes continuous processes of erosion and accretion. Natural processes like changes in local hydrology, sediment motion under wind, wave and tidal action, beach dynamics, regional and global processes like sea level rise as well as the impact of human interference in the form of reclamation of forest land, changes in land use patterns, coastal urbanizations etc are the lead factors for the changes in the environmental scenario of Sunderbans.

  • Pages : 574 pages

Download or read book Drainage Basin Dynamics written by Pravat Kumar Shit and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a versatile introduction to the study of drainage basin evolution, morphology, drainage basin hydrology and sedimentology, human interference, natural and anthropogenic hazards and various management techniques. This book offers the responsible factors of sediment yield and their absolute and specific growth and rate of delivery through tributaries to the main streams. Rivers are important geomorphic agents which reflect an amazing variety of form and behaviour, showing the wide range of natural environment in which they are originated. The drainage system evolution and spatial network development within the dynamic nature are being discussed and how they are adjusted in the geomorphic time scale over the millions of years. This book shows how drainage systems function and react to change and why this thoughtful is required for flourishing integrated basin management. In tropical and sub-tropical countries population pressures as well as different developmental projects are being executed on the drainage basin without proper planning. Today scientists consider drainage basin as an administrative unit during implementation of regional projects. In this context this book will carry a bench mark for scholars and young scientists.
