Book Hydrodynamics and Mass Transfer Studies in High Pressure Gas liquid and Gas liquid solid Fluidization

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Slurry bubble columns and gas-solid fluidized bed reactors are some of the most commonly used industrial processes. Considerable interests have been recognized in the field of physical, chemical, petrochemical, electrochemical, and biochemical operations (Fan, 1989). In these reactor systems, large axial dispersion of phases and high flow patterns can be achieved by the excellent macromixing characteristics. It also provides excellent heat and mass transfer without the aid of external mechanisms and relatively easy operation. Despite the advantages of operations, the transport behavior in these systems is very complex and a comprehensive knowledge of the hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer and mixing are required for successful application of these systems. Some aspects of the fundamental characteristics of evaporative liquid jets in gas-liquid-solid flows are studied and some pertinent literature is reviewed. It is found that the injection of an evaporative liquid jet decreases the minimum fluidization velocity at a high pressure due to the additional gas flow generated from liquid evaporation. Fluidizing gas velocities have no significant effect on the jet penetration length in a dense phase fluidized bed while it reduces the radial dispersed distance of the evaporative liquid. The tomographic images of liquid nitrogen injection in a dense phase fluidized bed indicate a distribution of reduced bubble sizes compared to a dry bed. The hydrodynamics, gas-liquid mass transfer properties and liquid entrainment phenomena in a high pressure and high temperature bubble column is investigated. Effects of pressure on hydrodynamics and mass transfer properties are mainly through the change in gas and liquid physical properties, which in turn changes the bubble dynamics that govern the transport phenomena. Experimental results show that liquid velocities have a direct influence on kl while other factors have a dominant effect on the interfacial area over kl. Liquid entrainment in bubble columns is controlled by the droplet formation during bubble bursting at interface. Effect of pressure on liquid entrainment is to due to the higher drag force exerted on the liquid droplet with higher gas density and the formation of smaller droplet by the smaller bubbles at high pressure.

Book Hydrodynamics and Mass Transfer in Downflow Slurry Bubble Columns

Download or read book Hydrodynamics and Mass Transfer in Downflow Slurry Bubble Columns written by Subrata Kumar Majumder and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slurry bubble column reactors are intensively used as a multiphase reactor in the chemical, biochemical, and petrochemical industries for carrying out reactions and mass transfer operations in which a gas, made up of one or several reactive components, comes into contact or reacts with a liquid. This volume describes the hydrodynamics of three-phase gas-liquid-solid flow in a downflow slurry bubble column. The efficiency of the downflow gas interacting system is characterized by the self-entrainment of secondary gas. The book covers the gas entrainment phenomena, gas holdup characteristics, pressure drop, gasliquid mixing characteristics, bubble size distribution, interfacial phenomena, and the mass transfer phenomena in the downflow slurry system. This volume will be useful in chemical and biochemical industries and in industrial research and development sectors, as well as in advanced education courses in this area. The book will be helpful for further understanding the multiphase behavior in gas interacting multiphase systems for research and development. The hydrodynamic and mass transfer characteristics discussed will be useful in the design and installation of the modified slurry bubble column in industry for specific applications.

Book Hydrodynamics of Three phase Fluidized Beds

Download or read book Hydrodynamics of Three phase Fluidized Beds written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrodynamics of three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) fluidized beds has been studied in two columns with inside diameters of 7.62 and 15.2 cm respectively. The minimum gas and liquid velocities necessary to fluidize various types of solids were determined and correlated as a function of the particle size and density and the liquid viscosity; no effect of the initial bed height or column diameter was found. Overall phase holdups, or volume fractions, determined from a homogeneous bed model were combined with similar literature data to yield correlations for the overall gas and solid phase holdups. The overall gas holdup increased as the gas velocity was increased, while the overall solid holdup was decreased by increased liquid velocity and was increased by increased particle diameter or solid/liquid density difference. An electroconductivity technique was developed for use in the three-phase fluidized beds which allowed each of the phase holdups to be determined at any point in the column. The technique has shown the existence of a transition region as the bed goes from a three-phase to a two-phase system. The holdup profiles were fitted using the error function, and the mean and standard deviation of the solid holdup profile, along with the gas and solid holdups in the regions where they were constant, were measured for each set of run conditions. Use of these five parameters, which were correlated with the physical pxrameters of the systems studied, permits each of the three phase holdup profiles to be predicted. This gives the reactor designer more information concerning phase distributions than was available previously; thus it will aid in the design of reactors where local conditions throughout the bed must be considered.

This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights advances in sustainable wastewater treatment technologies, particularly biological wastewater treatment, cavitation-based treatment, hybrid water treatment, membrane technologies, advance oxidation processes, and adsorption. The book focuses on a variety of advanced treatment techniques that are useful for the degradation of organic components, dyes, heavy metals effluent, etc. in wastewater. Industrial wastewater consists of variety of discharges based on the type of industry, such as the dairy/food industries, which generate more fats and high BOD value with variation in the pH value, while the electroplating industry may expel more inorganic matter and dissolved solids. The oil extraction industries will have more solvents contained in the effluent, and dyes and textiles industry create a higher organic load with high TDS. Hence, every type of manufacturing industry needs a different method for the treatment of its effluents. Looking at the use of intensified chemical processes in order to make cleaner environment, Innovative Technologies for the Treatment of Industrial Wastewater explores the new and innovative methods for pollutant removal that will prove useful for a variety of industries. Conventional wastewater treatment processes require a significant amount of energy and involve expensive equipment and maintenance. Sustainable wastewater treatment technologies, however, involve less generation of energy and employ more economically feasible treatment methods, requiring less equipment and fewer maintenance costs. Looking at the use of intensified chemical processes in order to make a cleaner environment, this volume explores new and innovative methods for pollutant removal that will prove useful for a variety of industries. This book highlights advances in sustainable wastewater treatment technologies, particularly biological wastewater treatment, cavitation-based treatment, hybrid water treatment, membrane technologies, advanced oxidation processes, and adsorption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The homogenization of single phase gases or liquids with chemical reactive components by mixing belongs to one of the oldest basic operations applied in chemical engineering. The mixing process is used as an essential step in nearly all processes of the chemical industry as well as the pharmaceutical and food ind- tries. Recent experimentally and theoretically based results from research work lead to a fairly good prediction of the velocity fields in differend kinds of mixers, where as predictions of simultaneously proceeding homogeneous chemical re- tions, are still not reliable in a similar way. Therefore the design of equipment for mixing processes is still derived from measurements of the so called “mixing time” which is related to the applied methods of measurement and the special - sign of the test equipment itself. The cooperation of 17 research groups was stimulated by improved modern methods for experimental research and visualization, for simulations and nume- cal calculations of mixing and chemical reactions in micro and macro scale of time and local coordinates. The research work was financed for a six years period within the recently finished Priority Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) named “Analysis, modeling and numerical prediction of flow-mixig with and without chemical reactions (SPP 1141)”. The objective of the investigations was to improve the prediction of efficiencies and selectivities of chemical re- tions on macroscopic scale.
