Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antarctic represents the last of the world's still unexplored continents. Since 1985, Italy has sent 10 expeditions to this region, three of those have been exclusively devoted to research on the marine ecology of the Ross Sea region. This volume presents a global picture of this research. It includes contributions on water mass characteristics, particulate organic matter and nutrient utilization, and physiological aspects of primary production. Further topics are zooplankton, krill and top predator interactions in relation to physical and biological parameters, ecological features of coastal fish communities and the spatio-temporal variability of benthic biocenoses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BIOMASS (Biological Investigations of Marine Antarctic Systems and Stocks) was a unique, large-scale, long-term, international research programme established in 1977 to investigate the ecology of the Southern Ocean. Its main aim was to gain a greater understanding of the biological systems and stocks in the marine Antarctic environment, thereby providing a sound basis for the future management of the living resources within this immense ocean. The programme was drawn to a close in 1991 and its completion marked by a colloquium which brought together key researchers to summarise and review the results obtained. This volume, arising from that colloquium, provides a succinct, state-of-the-art account of the ecology of the Southern Ocean and serves as a comprehensive record of this unique and successful international project.

Book Biology and Ecology of Antarctic Krill

Download or read book Biology and Ecology of Antarctic Krill written by Volker Siegel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a unique insight into the current knowledge of krill population dynamics including distribution, biomass, production, recruitment, growth and mortality rates. Detailed analysis is provided on food and feeding, reproduction and krill behaviour. The volume provides an overview on the aspects of natural challenges to the species, which involve predation, parasites and the commercial exploitation of the resource and its management. A chapter on genetics shows the results of population subdivision and summarizes recent work on sequencing transcriptomes for studying gene function as part of the physiology of live krill. The focus of Chapter 4 is on physiological functions such as biochemical composition, metabolic activity and growth change with ontogeny and season; and will demonstrate which environmental factors are the main drivers for variability. Further discussed in this chapter are the bottle necks which occur in the annual life cycle of krill, and the mechanisms krill have adapted to cope with severe environmental condition.

Book Krill

Download or read book Krill written by Inigo Everson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krill, or euphausiids, a group of immense importance in marine ecosystems, comprises over 80 species, most of which are planktonic. Krill are widespread with species to be found in all the oceans of the world. Their numerical density in some regions increases their importance to marine ecosystems and has led to commercially successful krill harvesting. This comprehensive volume, thoroughly edited by Inigo Everson, well known for his work in this area, comprises chapters written by internationally acknowledged experts. The contents include coverage of: sampling and distribution, population, aggregation, reproduction and the role of krill in the ecosystem. Further specific chapters include krill harvesting, products and details of management in Japanese, Canadian and Southern Ocean waters. Drawing on the experience in each, the ecosystem approach to management is discussed in detail and how it might be applied more widely for example in forage fisheries. This most important volume draws together, for the first time, a vast amount of vital information for all those involved in work on these important marine organisms. Krill will be of great use to fisheries scientists, marine biologists and ecologists, oceanographers, zoologists and invertebrate biologists and all those involved in the commercial harvesting, exploitation and management of krill, world wide. Libraries in all aquatic and marine research stations and universities where marine and fisheries sciences are studied and taught should have multiple copies of this landmark publication on their shelves. Contributions from internationally-recognised experts in the field. Well-edited to provide an accessible and user-friendly book. Krill are a key part of ocean ecosystems. Part of exciting new Blackwell Science Series.

Book Antarctic Science

  • Author : Gotthilf Hempel
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642787118
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Antarctic Science written by Gotthilf Hempel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public awareness of the importance of Antarctic research, particularly in relation to global problems, has increased. The book spans a broad spectrum of Antarctic science from the "ozone hole" to microbiology to the sea ice. The main focus is on the role of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in the world climate system, e.g. the formation of sea ice and its relevance to ocean circulation, the biological pump in relation to CO2 release. The past climate history is revealed by the analysis of ice cores and sediments. Studies of plate tectonics and fossil records reach further back in earth history. Key words in the biological chapters are krill and the rich Antarctic benthos. Finally, the potential conflict between conservationists, researchers and tourists is discussed.

Book Antarctic Ocean and Resources Variability

Download or read book Antarctic Ocean and Resources Variability written by Dietrich Sahrhage and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the intensification of research activities in the Southern Ocean in recent years, both at national levels and through international cooperation in such projects as BIOMASS with its FIBEX and SIBEX phases, the need was felt increasingly for closer collaboration between biologists, meteorologists, and oceanographers in the study of the interaction between the atmospheric forces, the water masses, and the living resources. Better knowledge in this regard is not only of scientific interest but also of practical importance, especially for the management of the resources and the protection of the Antarctic marine ecosystem. As a follow-up on a recommendation by the IOC Program Group for the Southern Oceans made in March 1983, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission organized a meeting of experts on oceanography related to the dynamics of the Antarctic ecosystems. During this meeting, held in Kiel, Federal Republic of Ger many, in May 1984, biologists and oceanographers involved in BIOMASS activities met with the oceanographers of SCOR Working Group 74 to discuss ways and means for additional physical and chemical observations in the oceanographic research within BIOMASS. It was the time when large fluctuations in the distribution of krill with subsequent detrimental effects on predator species dependent on krill had just been observed, and the question arose whether this was possibly the result of changes in the Antarctic water circulation.
