Book Stochastic and Statistical Methods in Hydrology and Environmental Engineering

Download or read book Stochastic and Statistical Methods in Hydrology and Environmental Engineering written by Keith W. Hipel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives The current global environmental crisis has reinforced the need for developing flexible mathematical models to obtain a better understanding of environmental problems so that effective remedial action can be taken. Because natural phenomena occurring in hydrology and environmental engineering usually behave in random and probabilistic fashions, stochastic and statistical models have major roles to play in the protection and restoration of our natural environment. Consequently, the main objective of this edited volume is to present some of the most up-to-date and promising approaches to stochastic and statistical modelling, especially with respect to groundwater and surface water applications. Contents As shown in the Table of Contents, the book is subdivided into the following main parts: GENERAL ISSUES PART I PART II GROUNDWATER PART III SURFACE WATER PART IV STOCHASTIC OPTIMIZATION PART V MOMENT ANALYSIS PART VI OTHER TOPICS Part I raises some thought-provoking issues about probabilistic modelling of hydro logical and environmental systems. The first two papers in Part I are, in fact, keynote papers delivered at an international environmetrics conference held at the University of Waterloo in June, 1993, in honour of Professor T. E. Unny. In his keynote pa per, Dr. S. J. Burges of the University of Washington places into perspective the historical and future roles of stochastic modelling in hydrology and environmental engineering. Additionally, Dr. Burges stresses the need for developing a sound scien tific basis for the field of hydrology. Professor P. E.

Book Hydraulic Engineering Software VIII

Download or read book Hydraulic Engineering Software VIII written by Wessex Institute of Technology and published by Computational Mechanics. This book was released on 2000 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic engineering is well-suited to the application of numerical analysis, and has therefore benefited greatly from the capabilities of the latest generation of powerful desktop computers. Demonstrating many of these benefits, this volume features papers from the Eighth International Conference on Hydraulic Engineering Software. Contributions come from scientists in industry, academia, government, and research organizations around the world, and emphasis is placed on the development of software in three main areas of interest, namely groundwater flow, open channel flow and pressure flow. There are also contributions on the subjects of data acquisition and experimentation, and flood and drought hazard assessment.

Book Some Applications of a Digital Computer to Hydraulic Engineering Problems

Download or read book Some Applications of a Digital Computer to Hydraulic Engineering Problems written by R. S. Dobson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A digital computer is applied to three hydraulic engineering problems with free boundaries. The problems considered are the refraction of periodic waves approaching a coastline, the supercritical flow of water in a spillway bucket, and seepage flow through an anisotropic earth embankment. In each case a solution was sought by use of the numerical methods of finite differences. The application to wave refraction was successful and a fully tested program which solves the refraction equation and the wave intensity equation for arbitrary bottom shapes is presented. A flow chart together with a program listing in FORTRAN IV is given. The application to spillway flows which uses a transformation of variables was also successful though the program has not been fully tested for all configurations. A flow chart and program listing are also given. The application to seepage flows was not completely successful. The program, written in RUSH PL/I, is listed. An appendix is attached in which the cavity shape parameters for the image model of a supercavitating wedge are tabulated, for cavitation numbers in the range 0.05 to 1.0 with wedge angles ranging from 5 to 90 degrees in each case. The results obtained have been compared with other known solutions where possible with good agreement. (Author).

Book Enhanced Abutment Scour Studies for Compound Channels

Download or read book Enhanced Abutment Scour Studies for Compound Channels written by Terry W. Sturm and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results and analyses are given in this report on bridge abutment scour in compound channels. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory flume with a cross section consisting of a wide floodplain adjacent to a main channel. The embankment length, discharge, sediment size, and abutment shape were varied, and the resulting equilibrium scour depths were measured. Water-surface profiles, velocities, and scour-hole contours were also measured. In the report, a methodology is developed for estimating abutment scour that takes into account the redistribution of discharge in the bridge contraction, abutment shape, sediment size, and tailwater depth. The independant variables in the proposed scour formula are evaluated at the approach-channel cross section and can be obtained froma one-dimensional water-surface profile computer program such as the Water-Surface Profile Program (WSPRO). The proposed scour evaluation procedure is outlined and illustrated, including consideration of the time required to reach equilibrium scour. The proposed methodology is applied to two cases of measured scour in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is intended as an introduction to the more common applications of water resources engineering software, and it demonstrates the types of situations that an engineer will most likely come across on a daily basis in the real world. It shows the true benefits of computer software: increased efficiency, better flexibility, and most important an increased ability to try different and better designs.---Forward

Book Mathematical Modelling Courses for Engineering Education

Download or read book Mathematical Modelling Courses for Engineering Education written by Yasar Ersoy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the role of the modern engineer is markedly different from that of even a decade ago, the theme of engineering mathematics educa tion (EME) is an important one. The need for mathematical model ling (MM) courses and consideration of the educational impact of computer-based technology environments merit special attention. This book contains the proceeding of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held on this theme in July 1993. We have left the industrial age behind and have entered the in formation age. Computers and other emerging technologies are penetrating society in depth and gaining a strong influence in de termining how in future society will be organised, while the rapid change of information requires a more qualified work force. This work force is vital to high technology and economic competitive ness in many industrialised countries throughout the world. Within this framework, the quality of EME has become an issue. It is expected that the content of mathematics courses taught in schools of engineering today have to be re-evaluated continuously with regard to computer-based technology and the needs of mod ern information society. The main aim of the workshop was to pro vide a forum for discussion between mathematicians, engineering scientists, mathematics educationalists, and courseware develop ers in the higher education sector and to focus on the issues and problems of the design of more relevant and appropriate MM courses for engineering education.
