While making a critical contribution to the economic well being of those countries, transportation systems in general and highway traffic in particular, also have detrimental effects which are evident in excessive congestion, high rates of accidents and severe pollution problems. Scientists from different disciplines have played an important role in the development and refinement of the tools needed for the planning, analysis, and control of urban traffic networks. In the past several years, there were particularly rapid advances in two areas that affect urban traffic: 1. Modeling of traffic flows in urban networks and the prediction of the resulting equilibrium conditions; 2. Technology for communication with the driver and the ability to guide him, by providing him with useful, relevant and updated information, to his desired destination.

Book excerpt: The efficiency of congested urban transportation networks can be improved by implementing appropriate traffic control strategies, such as signal control timing, turning movement control; implementation of one-way traffic policies, lane distribution controls etc. In this dissertation, the following strategies are addressed: 1) Intersection left turn addition/deletion, 2) Lane designation, . and 3) Signal optimization. The analogy between the network design problem (NDP) and the optimization of traffic control strategies motivated the formulation of an urban transportation network design problem (UTNDP) to optimize traffic control strategies. An UTNDP is a typical bi-level programming program, where the lower level problem is a User Equilibrium (UE) traffic assignment problem, while the upper level problem is a 0-1 integer programming problem. The upper level of an UTNDP model is used to represent the choices of the transportation authority. The lower level problem captures the travelers' behavior. The objective function of the UTNDP is to minimize the total UE travel time. In this dissertation, a realistic travel time estimation procedure based on the 1997 HCM which takes account the effects of the above factors is proposed. The UTNDP is solved through a hybrid simulated annealing-TABU heuristic search strategy that was developed specifically for this problem. TABU lists are used to avoid cycling, and the Simulated Annealing step is used to select moves such that an annealing equilibrium state is achieved so that a reasonably good solution is guaranteed. The computational experiments are conducted on four test networks to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the UTNDP search strategy. Sensitivity analyses are also conducted on TABU list length, Markov chain increasing rate and control parameter dropping rate, and the weight coefficients of the HEF, which is composed of the current link v/c ratio, the historical contribution factor, and the random factor.

Book excerpt: The problem that formally describes the overall planning process for a public transportation network is referred to as the Urban Transit Network Design Problem (UTNDP) and has two major components, namely routing and scheduling. This network design problem is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem that belongs to a class of problems known as NP-hard. This thesis develops a hybrid population based optimization method for the Urban Transit Routing Problem, which is the first component of the UTNDP, where the routes of a transit network are designed to meet a number of requirements such as low average passenger travel time and number of transfers. Herein, a discrete version of the Particle Swarm Optimization method is hybridized with evolution operators from Genetic Algorithms in order to determine near optimal routes for an urban transit network. The performance of the algorithm is tested using Mandl's Swiss bus network, a benchmark network used in bus transit network design, and compared with the most recent and efficient methods from the literature. The parameters producing the best values are found and sensitivity analyses are conducted. Results show that the algorithm is capable of creating routes that satisfy the demand in an acceptable computational time, yielding superior results over existing methods.

Book excerpt: A wide range of books on urban systems models are available today for the student of urban planning, geography, and economics. There are few, if any, books, however, that deal with integrated urban systems modeling from the operational viewpoint. The term "integrated" is used here in the same sense as the "general equilibrium", in contrast to such approaches as "sequential" or "partial equilibrium". In fact, the main thesis of this book is that the characteristics of ur ban activity that best distinguish it from rural activity are (1) the intensive use of urban land and (2) urban congestion. On this basis, models that are introduced in this book are three- dimensional in character and produce urban land use configurations with explicit optimal density of urban pro duction activities along with optimal levels of transportation congestion. It is also assumed that both public and private sectors play significant roles in shaping urban forms, structures, and functions in mixed economic systems. From this viewpoint, models developed in this book address two integrated decision-making procedures: one by the public sector, which provides urban infrastructure and public services, and the other one by the private sector, which uses provided infrastructure and public services in pursuing parochial interests.

The ability of traf c simulation to emulate the time variability of traf c phenomena makes it a unique tool for capturing the complexity of traf c systems. In recent years, traf c simulation – and namely microscopic traf c simulation – has moved from the academic to the professional world. A wide variety of traf- c simulation software is currently available on the market and it is utilized by thousands of users, consultants, researchers and public agencies. Microscopic traf c simulation based on the emulation of traf c ows from the dynamics of individual vehicles is becoming one the most attractive approaches. However, traf c simulation still lacks a uni ed treatment. Dozens of papers on theory and applications are published in scienti c journals every year. A search of simulation-related papers and workshops through the proceedings of the last annual TRB meetings would support this assertion, as would a review of the minutes from speci cally dedicated meetings such as the International Symposiums on Traf c Simulation (Yokohama, 2002; Lausanne, 2006; Brisbane, 2008) or the International Workshops on Traf c Modeling and Simulation (Tucson, 2001; Barcelona, 2003; Sedona, 2005; Graz 2008). Yet, the only comprehensive treatment of the subject to be found so far is in the user’s manuals of various software products.
