They put together a team of the most brilliant minds the world had to offer and came up with a solution. Nanobots. Billions of these microscopic robots were made to absorb radioactive particles which would, in turn, make the areas destroyed by fallout habitable again. The scientists ran hundreds of tests and simulations, all with excellent outcomes, and decided that the project was ready to implement. The nanobots were released into the areas effected by radiation and did what they were supposed to do. They absorbed it. After the absorption phase, however, things didn't go according to plan. Instead of heading back to a safely secured site for decontamination, the nanos dispersed themselves over the entire Earth. When they fell back down, they merged humans with whatever machine or metal they happened to be touching at the time. Hybrid Earth follows the story of Officer Xander Hastings and his Orb, Link. Together they try to keep track of the chaos and make sure innocent people aren't caught in the crossfire. It's a tough job, especially in a world where nearly everyone has abilities and he has none. Even though he is constantly outmatched by beings more powerful than himself, he still finds a way to get the job done.

Rico is the last remaining son of heaven on earth who fell here in ancient times to father our civilization. Lost, alone, and broken, he grieves the mortality of his hybrid species. They do not share his impossibly long lifespan. Living among them is constant loss, pain, and grief. Rico also grieves his hybrid species dark side. Some offspring retain the unquenchable hunger for flesh of their earth ancestors and the long lifespan of the sons of heaven. The ugly head of Tarquez periodically scars the history of humankind with death, destruction, and sorrow. Tarquez is one of those hybrids born of the first generation of the union who retained both the unquenchable hunger for flesh and the long life span of the sons of heaven.

Artificial Earth argues that to fully grasp the stakes of this discourse, we need not only understand the contemporary scientific and technological transformations behind the Anthropocene, but also explore the history of an ontological concern tied up with it. In order to do so, Artificial Earth examines reflections on the ontological dualism between nature and artifice within the history of earth science from the late eighteenth century onwards. Paying particular attention to its consequences for how human subjectivity has been conceptualized in the Anthropocene, it then enrolls these resources in an effort to problematize attempts since the 1980s to formalize earth science in systems theoretical terminology. In sum, the aim is to investigate the historical conditions for the possibility of conceiving human artifice as an integral part of the earth's terrestrial environment, with the conviction that such an investigation may assist in resolving the aforementioned contradiction or at least to understand it better by tracing its historical lineage. J. Daniel Andersson is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department for Thematic Studies, Linköping University. His research interests lie at the intersection between the technical cultures, political imaginaries, and historical processes that have shaped the ways in which the global environment has been understood and valued. A general fascination with how concepts and discursive vocabularies become solidified in scientific modes of organization has consistently informed his theoretical and methodological approaches. He has previously written about, for instance, the relationship between future-orientation and valuation in integrated assessment models, climate engineering as a sociotechnical imaginary, and the intellectual history of risk management in global change science. His writing has appeared in journals such as Environment & Planning, Anthropocenes, and Cosmos & History.
