Book Evaluation of Flexible Pavement Overlays

Download or read book Evaluation of Flexible Pavement Overlays written by Ralph William Culley and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of a lower bituminous layer in an overlay pavement system. The evaluation was made from a qualitative comparison of the reactions of an overlay system / when subjected to a static load, to those of a conventional system when subjected to the same loading. Maximum deflections were measured and used for calculation of the modular ratio and radius of curvature of longitudinal deflection bowls. The maximum deflections and the radii of curvature were determined at the interfaces of the various layers of the pavement structures. The results of the investigation indicated that, because of the lower bituminous layer in the overlay structure, the overlay structure was stiffer, and therefore less affected by applied loads, than the conventional structure. The major conclusion was that a bituminous layer, vhen located at depth in an overlay pavement structure, is a superior structural component than granular subbase at the same depth.

Book Installation and Initial Evaluation of Paving Fabric Interlayers for Mitigating Reflective Cracking in Pavements

Download or read book Installation and Initial Evaluation of Paving Fabric Interlayers for Mitigating Reflective Cracking in Pavements written by Harikrishnan Nair and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propagation of cracks from existing pavements into a new asphalt concrete overlay (reflective cracking) is a major problem for both rigid and flexible pavements. Reflective cracking in pavements compromises ride quality and reduces the service life of the pavement. Reflective cracking of the asphalt layer over jointed concrete pavement is a perennial problem in Virginia and elsewhere. State transportation agencies continue to try various available treatment methods to delay or prevent reflective cracking with corrective or restorative maintenance. Some of those treatments include using paving fabric as an interlayer. Virginia has anecdotal experience with paving fabric interlayers, but little well-documented history with which to assess performance. The objective of this study was to establish a performance baseline for fabric interlayers in conjunction with asphalt concrete overlays on existing flexible, rigid, and composite pavements by documenting the installation and initial field performance of several projects in Virginia. Two types of interlayer fabric were used. One of the interlayers needed an asphalt leveling course for placement based on the manufacturer's specifications. As expected, all of the sections with interlayers are performing well. However, most of the sections were placed in 2017 and 2018, and hence the performance data are preliminary. These sections need to be monitored continuously to track pavement distress and performance over time. The cost of using interlayers in pavement ranged from 6 .0 dollars to 8 .0 dollars per square yard, depending on the type of fabric and installation method. Long-term performance data are needed to assess the benefit-cost effectiveness of using paving fabric interlayers in pavements.

Book Evaluation of Composite Pavement Unbonded Overlays

Download or read book Evaluation of Composite Pavement Unbonded Overlays written by James K. Cable and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, thin whitetopping has evolved as a viable rehabilitation technique for deteriorated asphalt cement concrete (ACC) pavements. Numerous projects have been constructed and tested, allowing researchers to identify the important elements contributing to the projects' successes. These elements include surface preparation, overlay thickness, synthetic fiber reinforcement usage, joint spacing, and joint sealing. Although the main factors affecting thin whitetopping performance have been identified by previous research, questions still existed as to the optimum design incorporating these variables. The objective of this research is to investigate the interaction between these variables over time. Laboratory testing and field testing were conducted to achieve the research objectives. Laboratory testing involved shear testing of the bond between the portland cement concrete (PCC) overlay and the ACC surface. Field testing involved falling weight deflectometer deflection responses, measurement of joint faulting and joint opening, and visual distress surveys on the 9.6 mile project. The project was located on Iowa Highway 13 extending north from the city of Manchester, Iowa to Iowa Highway 3 in Delaware County. Variables investigated include ACC surface preparation, PCC thickness, slab size, synthetic fiber reinforcement usage, and joint spacing. This report documents the planning, construction, and performance of each variable in the time period from summer 2002 through spring 2006. The project has performed well with only minor distress identification since its construction.

Book Structural Evaluation of Flexible Pavement Using Deflection Basin

Download or read book Structural Evaluation of Flexible Pavement Using Deflection Basin written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a methodology for testing, evaluation and determination of overlay thickness required for a given pavement section. The overlay design procedure presented makes use of some of the recent developments for analysis and design of asphaltic concrete overlays. The evaluation of in-service pavements includes the use of the deflection parameters developed by testing of the existing pavements with known geometry for determining the moduli of various pavement layers and the required overlay thickness. The method utilizes empirical values and VESYS structural subsystem as an integral approach complementary to each other. Six pavement sections across the State of North Carolina were selected for deflection testing. Deflection parameters were developed to characterize the deflection data from these pavement sections. In addition, VESYS structural system was used to develop nomographs for the interpretation of the measured deflection basin parameters. These nomographs were used to backcalculate the layer moduli form deflection parameters and known layer thicknesses using iterative solutions. The backcalculated layer moduli from these nomographs correspond to the climate conditions that happen to exist during the time of testing and must therefore be adjusted to other climatic conditions. A procedure for such an adjustment is also included in the design procedure. Many different methods have been developed for determining an overlay thickness. These methods can be categorized in three groups : component analysis, deflection based, and analytically based. A mechanistic procedure is described in this paper. This procedure is based on the data and findings of a previous research and has been used to evaluate in-service pavements in North Carolina using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) deflection parameters. The procedure includes four major parts : (a) FWD deflection parameters and data collection, (b) back-calculation of layer moduli, (c) adjustment of layer moduli and (d) prediction of overlay thickness. For the covering abstract of this Conference see IRRD abstract number 853851.
