Download or read book The Black Hussars written by Gary Corrado and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No. 1, For King and Country: The History of Loyalist Units During the American Revolution. Dr. Gary Corrado. Captain Diemar's Troop of Hussars was raised in 1779. This unit was composed mainly of escaped German prisoners of war from the various Brunswick regiments that had accompanied Burgoyne at Saratoga. Having made their way back to New York without their officers, these men had become somewhat unruly but were well suited for service in a unique independent hussar troop. Hussars were cavalry troops who dressed lightly, traveled quickly on fast horses and could inflict a devastating blow on the enemy at just the right moment during battle. Diemar's Hussars found themselves attached to Provincial regiments, including Tarleton's Legion and the Queen's Rangers, and they served in the environs of the British garrison in New York City. They were involved in numerous skirmishes in the area known as the "no-man's land" in Westchester County, participated in raids into New Jersey, and patrolled the north shore of Long Island against Connecticut whaleboat raiders. The Rangers also had a hussar company, and given the fact that the Black Hussars, as they were to become known, spent much of their time with, and eventually were joined to the Rangers, their dress was similar. The illustration on the cover depicts their previously unknown appearance, based on documentation which is presented in this work.

Book Historical Record of the Seventh or the Queen s Own Regiment of Hussars

Download or read book Historical Record of the Seventh or the Queen s Own Regiment of Hussars written by Richard Cannon and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an account of the services of the Hussar regiment. The Queen's Own Regiment of Hussars was initially corps of heavy cavalry. It was composed of independent troops of horse and dragoons, raised in Scotland during the commotions which followed the Revolution of 1688. These horsemen's title and unique dress were later widely adopted by light cavalry regiments in European armies in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This historical work contains various accurate details on the Hussar Regiment. These include the period and circumstances of the original formation of the Regiment, the stations at which they have been from time to time employed, the battles, sieges, and other military operations in which they took part, and the names of the officers, killed or wounded by the enemy.

Book Napoleon s Hussars and Chasseurs

Download or read book Napoleon s Hussars and Chasseurs written by Paul L Dawson and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small men, with big egos and moustaches, the hussars of Napoleon’s army wore some of the most flamboyant and stylish uniforms of the epoch. The uniforms of the seventeen regiments of hussars are discussed in detail, along with the dress of their brethren in the thirty-two regiments of chasseurs a cheval, with an emphasis on highly elaborate dress of the trumpeters. Archive documents which have never been previously used to study the subject will be used for the first time: many of these documents have not been published in French and have never appeared as translations. Illustrated with contemporary illustrations, original items of uniform and reconstructions of uniforms, this is the definitive guide to the dress of the Napoleon’s light cavalry. This is one of a series of ground-breaking books which will be the defacto study of this perennially popular subject for historians, researchers, wargamers, re-enactors and artists. Using archive records to ‘set the record straight’, as well as contemporary illustrations and original items of uniforms, the author sets out to describe the uniform of every regiment of Napoleon’s army. Using archive sources found in the Archives Nationales and Service Historique du Armee de Terre in Paris, the author’s unrivalled research over a period of twenty years, will reveal exactly how, for the first time in over 200 years, Napoleon’s army was mounted, clothed and equipped. Having been granted to access to over 1,000 archive boxes, the author assesses how the regulations were adopted in practice. This vast resource, as yet untapped by the majority of researchers and historians for understanding the Napoleonic era in general, include the many regimental archive boxes preserved in the French Army archives. These sources provide, potentially bias free empirical data from which we can reconstruct the life story of a regiment, its officers and above all its clothing. What did trumpeters wear? Did cavalry regiments really have sapeurs? We answer these questions and present the reality of how regiments were dressed derived from diaries, letters, inspection returns, regimental accounts and even cases of fraud. For the first time, this unique series of books discusses the wide ranging 1806 uniform regulation and the more famous Bardin regulation which applied to all arms of the Army and explores the way in which regiments on campaign adopted and adapted their uniforms. For the first time since the days of Napoleon, we can say exactly what was worn by the French army.

Book Polish Winged Hussar 1576 1775

Download or read book Polish Winged Hussar 1576 1775 written by Richard Brzezinski and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 2006-07-25 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the origins and development of the Polish 'Winged' Hussars. Using many years' painstaking research drawn from unpublished Polish sources, the author provides a rounded view of the training, tactics, appearance and experiences of these legendary and fascinating warriors. Most dramatic of all Hussar characteristics were the 'wings' worn on the back or on the saddle, although not all Hussars wore them, and their purpose has been fiercely debated. The Hussars terrified the Turks, Tatars, Muscovite boyars, Ukrainian Cossacks and Swedes, who did everything to avoid facing them directly in battle.

Book excerpt: Exploiting Muscovy's Time of Troubles, Poland has invaded the chaotic country. Twenty-two-year-old Jacek Dąbrowski is an honorable, ferocious warrior in a company of winged hussars-an unrivaled, lethal cavalry. When his lieutenant dies in battle, Jacek is promoted to replace him, against the wishes of his superior, Mateusz, who now has more reason to eliminate him. Jacek dedicates his life to gaining the king's recognition and manor lands of his own. Consequently, he closely guards his heart, avoiding lasting romantic entanglements. Unscathed on the battlefield, undefeated in tournaments, and adored by women eager to share his bed, Jacek has never lost at anything he sets out to conquer. So when he charges toward his goals, he believes nothing stands in his way. Upon his return from battle, Jacek deviates from his ordinarily unemotional mindset and rescues enemy siblings, fifteen-year-old Oliwia and her younger brother, Filip, from their devastated Muscovite village. His act of mercy sets into motion unstoppable consequences that ripple through his well-ordered life for years to come-and causes him to irretrievably lose his heart. Oliwia has her own single-minded drive: to protect her young brother. Her determination and self-sacrifice lead her to adopt a new country, a new religion, and a new way of life. But it's not the first time the resilient beauty has had to remake herself, for she is not what she appears to be. As Jacek battles the Muscovites and Tatars threatening Poland's borders for months at a time, Oliwia is groomed for a purpose concealed from her. All the while, Mateusz's treachery and a mysterious enemy looming on the horizon threaten to destroy everything Jacek holds dear.

Book Hussars Horses and History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. He commanded the Regiment during the Borneo campaign and was Colonel from 1975 to 1985. His account of war in Italy and of operations in Malaya and Borneo are of special interest. This light-hearted memoir reveals devotion to his family, friends, Regiment and to horses. His adventures with horses and hounds, whipping-in to the legendary Loopy Kennard, and during his time as Master of the Staff College Draghounds are particularly diverting. Addiction to reading and writing led to authorship of twelve military history books.Military appointments included command of a brigade, two years at SHAPE and finally Chief of Staff, UK Land Forces. He then describes working as Westland Aircraft s Military Adviser, mainly in the Middle East and gives a vivid account of life in Cairo in the latter 1970s.In sum General Strawson shows how enjoyable, how varied, sometimes how demanding a soldier s life can be, above all how rewarding, made so by the priceless quality of the regimental system and the comrades with whom he served."

Book The 4th Queen s Own Hussars in the Great War

Download or read book The 4th Queen s Own Hussars in the Great War written by Captain H. K. D. Evans and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his foreword to this book, Winston Churchill rightly calls it a ‘plain yet careful record of the fortunes and services of the 4th (Queen's Own) Hussars in the Great War (which) deserves and will repay attentive study from those to whom the history of the regiments of the British Army is of vivid interest'. The 4th Queen’s Own were one of the Army’s elite cavalry regiments which fulfilled their traditional role in the open warfare which characterised the campaigns in 1914 and 1918 at the beginning and end of the Great War. In between, of course, came the static horrors of trench warfare, when, as Churchill tactfully says: ‘the fond hopes which cavalry Generals and cavalry soldiers cherished of a great eruption of cavalry through the German lines as the culmination of a decisive battle never materialised’. Nevertheless, the 4th took part in the retreat from Mons in 1914; the first and second battle of Ypres - in which they experienced the first German poison gas attack - and the battles of Loos, the Somme and Arras. In 1918 they saw action in both the great German spring offensives and the victorious allied counter-attacks that summer and autumn. Illustrated with maps, photographs and appendices containing rolls of honour, decorations, lists of officers etc. this is a complete unit history for those interested in cavalry regiments in the Great War.
