Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Our Little Secret comes a “twisty, gripping” psychological thriller “with heart” set in the Rocky Mountains (Kaira Rouda, author of The Favorite Daughter) Reunited for the first time since childhood, two estranged sisters fight to keep their darkest secret where it belongs—in the past. Alexandra Van Ness has the perfect life. She lives in an idyllic resort town tucked away in the Rocky Mountains, shares a designer loft with her handsome boyfriend, Chase, and has her dream job working in child protection. Every day, Alex goes above and beyond to save children at risk. But when her long-lost sister, Ruth, unexpectedly shows up at her door, Alex’s perfect life is upended. Growing up, Ruth was always the troublemaker, pulling Alex into her messes, and this time will be no different. Still, Alex will help Ruth under one condition: we will never, ever, talk about the past. But when trouble befalls a local child, both women are forced to confront the secrets they’ve promised to keep buried. Utterly engrossing and claustrophobic, Hurry Home is a tantalizing reflection of the chain-and-shackles relationship between sisters that asks: what lines wouldn't you cross for your own?

Book excerpt: The YouTube star and beauty guru shares her hard-won lessons on success, style, and finding the sweetness in all aspects of your life. Since posting her first makeup tutorial in 2008, Dulce Candy has become one of the top beauty stars on YouTube, boasting more than 2 million subscribers and garnering hundreds of millions of views of her bright and energetic videos. But before she became a style icon and a role model to millions of young women, Dulce struggled to make her way in the world. Having emigrated with her family from Mexico to the United States when she was six years old, Dulce battled depression and low self-esteem as a teenager and eventually enlisted in the army in an attempt to turn her life around. It was here, on the battlefields of Iraq, that she finally uncovered and embraced her true passion—fashion and beauty—and gained the confidence to move on from her past, follow her dream, and launch what would become her wildly successful brand. The Sweet Life chronicles Dulce Candy’s inspiring story, showing that anyone can be successful no matter their background and sharing the hard-won lessons that helped transform her from a shy, self-doubting teenager into a confident business woman and beauty expert. According to Dulce, you can’t live the sweet life until you accept who you are—flaws and all—and take chances—knowing that failure is just a part of learning and fear is a sign that you’re trying something new and exciting. Drawing on anecdotes from her own life and career, Dulce offers advice on building a personal brand (“Know what makes you different”), building confidence (“Fake it till you make it”) and balancing the personal and the professional (“Don’t settle when you settle down”). She also emphasizes the importance of both inner and outer beauty, encouraging women to love themselves, ignore the critics, and flaunt their own original style. Part memoir, part manifesto, The Sweet Life is a fun, inspirational guide for any woman who wants to find success and happiness without compromising who she is.

Book Dust Off the Gold Medal

Download or read book Dust Off the Gold Medal written by Sara L. Schwebel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest and most prestigious children’s literature award, the Newbery Medal has since 1922 been granted annually by the American Library Association to the children’s book it deems "most distinguished." Medal books enjoy an outsized influence on American children’s literature, figuring perennially on publishers’ lists, on library and bookstore shelves, and in school curricula. As such, they offer a compelling window into the history of US children’s literature and publishing, as well as into changing societal attitudes about which books are "best" for America’s schoolchildren. Yet literary scholars have disproportionately ignored the Medal winners in their research. This volume provides a critically- and historically-grounded scholarly analysis of representative but understudied Newbery Medal books from the 1920s through the 2010s, interrogating the disjunction between the books’ omnipresence and influence, on the one hand, and the critical silence surrounding them, on the other. Dust Off the Gold Medal makes a case for closing these scholarly gaps by revealing neglected texts’ insights into the politics of children’s literature prizing and by demonstrating how neglected titles illuminate critical debates currently central to the field of children’s literature. In particular, the essays shed light on the hidden elements of diversity apparent in the neglected Newbery canon while illustrating how the books respond—sometimes in quite subtle ways—to contemporaneous concerns around race, class, gender, disability, nationalism, and globalism.

Book excerpt: An “affecting novel” of a lifelong friendship that “hones in on both the big and small things that draw women together” (Orlando Sentinel). Frances Simpson and Libba Charles had nothing in common. Sweet and modest, the picture of a Southern lady, Frances possessed all the poise and grace that brash northerner Libba did not. But thrust together by chance in the fall of 1947 as freshman roommates, Frances and Libba formed an indelible bond of friendship that lasted for over forty-six years. Frances’s three grown daughters want as little to do with each other as they do with Libba, the woman who dominated their mother’s attention and affections for their entire lives. But when their mother, on her deathbed, makes them swear to “look after Libba,” they feel they have no choice—especially after Libba summons them to their mother’s summer cabin in North Carolina. Once they arrive in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Libba begins to reveal a tale of secrets and betrayals, promises and resentments the girls never knew. And, as long-hidden confidences are finally brought to light, Frances’s daughters will discover heartbreaking and powerful truths about themselves, their mother, and the nature of sisterhood, in this wise, emotional tale by the award-winning author of How Close We Come and The Last of Something.
