Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 16, 1999, rainfall from Hurricane Floyd swelled North Carolina's rivers, flooding tens of thousands of homes, businesses, and communities across the eastern third of the state; taking 52 lives; and causing an estimated $6 billion in damages. Faces from the Flood is a compelling look back at the state's most destructive natural disaster, conveyed through the words of those who endured it. Thirty-seven interviews with victims, heroes, volunteers, scientists, and government officials offer tales of dramatic rescues, sorrowful losses, and the quiet determination to survive and rebuild. The story of Floyd is far from over, and North Carolinians must be prepared to face similar storms in the future, warn Richard Moore and Jay Barnes. They conclude with an assessment of the state's response to Floyd and a discussion of what programs should be initiated, maintained, or strengthened to prepare for future storms. Through evocative personal stories, maps, tables, and dozens of striking photographs, Faces from the Flood highlights the dramatic impact of Hurricane Floyd. It will serve as a valuable reference for future explorations of North Carolina's greatest disaster.

Book excerpt: Everyone knows that hurricanes bring devastating winds and rain, but what happens when the rain doesn't stop falling? When hurricane Floyd struck North Carolina, rain poured from the coast to the mountains. Rivers and streams overflowed as rainwater returned to the sea, flooding areas along the coast.Jimmy, Lavada and their mother lived in the small town of Princeville, the first southern town founded by ex-slaves. Their home by the Tar River was underwater for nearly two weeks. The rising waters destroyed every building and threatened to wash away history. Left homeless, Jimmy and Kendra join the townspeople as they face a very tough choice: Should they save their community and preserve their history, or should they move to higher ground?

Book Flood Hazards and Health

Download or read book Flood Hazards and Health written by Roger Few and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flood hazards and the risks they present to human health are an increasing concern across the globe, in terms of lives, well-being and livelihoods, and the public resources needed to plan for, and deal with, the health impacts. This book is the first detailed assessment and discussion of the global health implications of flooding and future flood risk. It combines an analysis of the human health impacts of flooding with analysis of individual and societal response to those risks, and sets these findings in light of potential future increases in flood hazard as a result of climate change. Written and edited by leading researchers and practitioners on flood hazards and human health, the volume brings together findings from epidemiological, environmental, social and institutional studies, with analysis rooted in an approach that emphasizes the developmental as well as environmental causes of flood risk, and the socially differentiated nature of vulnerability and coping capacity. The first part of the book sets out the scope of the issues, and provides a detailed discussion of the global health impacts of floods and the nature of human response to the health risks posed. The second part presents new research evidence on specific health aspects of floods covering mental health, infectious diseases, local level responses and the responses of health systems - drawing on case study material from Europe, Africa, Asia and North America, including the impact of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The conclusion synthesizes insights from the previous chapters and discusses priorities for policy, practice and research. It draws out implications for present and future adaptation to flooding, and emphasizes the need to integrate action on health with the broader agenda of long-term risk reduction. This is indispensable reading for professionals and researchers working on hazard and disaster planning, risk reduction and public health in all countries and contexts.

Book excerpt: Interviews with flood victims, relief workers, ministers, farmers, farm workers, small-business owners, environmental monitors, and political leaders in eastern North Carolina about the devastating flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd. In the fall of 1999, soon after the flood, the Southern Oral History Program set out to document the catastrophe as part of its Listening for a Change initiative. Accompanied by photographer Rob Amberg, project coordinator Charlie Thompson led the effort to assess the environmental, political, and economic consequences of the disaster, as well as its impact on individual lives. Many broad themes emerged from Thompson's interviews: the sweeping toll of the flood on human lives.

Book Effects of Hurricane Floyd on Water Levels

Download or read book Effects of Hurricane Floyd on Water Levels written by Chris Eugene Zervas and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hurricane Floyd was the strongest and most damaging hurricane of the 1999 Atlantic season. At its peak strength to was classified as a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale. By the time it made landfall near Wilmington, NC it had weakened to a category 2 hurricane. Most of the damage and casualties attributed to the storm were due to heavy rainfall and flooding caused by the passage of the storm along the U.S. Atlantic coastline, The hardest hit area was eastern North Carolina. This report covers the data collected by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) during the passage of Floyd in the week of September 13-19, 1999. The storm track resulted in significant storm surges at almost all of CO-OPS' National Water Level Observations Network (NWLON) stations along the Atlantic Coast. At three stations, observed water levels exceeded their historical records. Previous major storm event data reports are listed in the reference section at the end of this report"--Introduction (page 1)
