Book excerpt: The OPD Second Canadian Edition is an illustrated, theme-based dictionary for second-language learners. This four-colour dictionary defines words through pictures, and presents each new word in context. The OPD, along with its workbooks and many other components, can be used as a referencebook or as text for high school or adult ESL students at the beginner level. For years, the first Canadian edition of the OPD has been the industry leader among picture dictionaries. The second edition expands on the topics covered, providing more depth of vocabulary in the areas that matter most to students. The illustrations have been completely updated in a more realisticstyle that is visually appealing to adult learners. The second edition also contains two new features: Introductory Pages and Story Pages. The Introductory Pages have been added to the beginning of each theme to give lower-level students a basic overview of key vocabulary words, and to give a starting point for discussion and an introduction to thetheme for more advanced students. The Story Pages consist of a two-page spread at the end of each theme to help students use the words in context and practise their reading skills. The OPD is designed for use both in and out of the classroom. Speaking exercises are presented throughout the OPD to allow students to practise new vocabulary in pairs or small groups, while the pronunciation guide in the index allows students to check their pronunciation when they are studying ontheir own.

Book excerpt: KAT LOMB (1909-2003) was one of the great polyglots of the 20th century. A translator and one of the first simultaneous interpreters in the world, Lomb worked in 16 languages for state and business concerns in her native Hungary. She achieved further fame by writing books on languages, interpreting, and polyglots. Because Dr. Lomb learned her languages as an adult, after getting a PhD in chemistry, the methods she used will be of particular interest to adult learners who want to master a foreign language.
Download or read book Williams Syndrome across Languages written by Susanne Bartke and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-06-22 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Williams Syndrome (WS), aka Williams Beuren Syndrome, is a developmental disorder that we have known about for some forty years. The cause for WS was detected only recently: a micro deletion on chromosome 7, more specifically at the region of chromosome 7q11.23. The cognitive and behavioral profile in WS is characterized by a marked discrepancy between verbal and non-verbal skills combined with relatively spared linguistic skills. Recent research has shown considerable progress defining the areas of intactness in linguistic abilities. This volume builds on that research, giving an overview of the psycholinguistic research undertaken and opening up new perspectives and insights through new data and analyses. This book is of interest to researchers of applied cognitive science and to linguists more occupied with theoretical research.
Download or read book Hungarian Language Contact Outside Hungary written by Anna Fenyvesi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-06-09 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Communist times, it was impossible to do sociolinguistic work on Hungarian in contact with other languages. In the short period of time since the collapse of the Soviet bloc, Hungarian sociolinguists have certainly done their very best to catch up. This volume brings together the fruits of their work, some of which was hitherto only available in Hungarian. The reader will find a wealth of information on many bilingual communities involving Hungarian as a minority language. The communities covered in the book are located in countries neighboring Hungary (Austria, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania and Ukraine) as well as overseas (in Australia and the United States). Several of the chapters discuss material derived from the Sociolinguistics of Hungarian Outside Hungary project. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on how the language use of Hungarian minority speakers has been influenced by the majority or contact language, both on a sociolinguistic macro-level as well as on the micro-level. In the search for explanations, particular attention is given to typological aspects of language change under the conditions of language contact.
