Book excerpt: The stormy and often war-torn history of Hungary has been the background for a flourishing industry of gold and silversmith's work. Unfortunately, Hungarian silver is little known outside Hungary, but the outstanding collection of pieces acquired in the West over the last three decades by Nicolas Salgo and spanning more than four centuries of the goldsmith's craft provides a highly representative survey of the remarkable work of the Hungarian craftsmen. More than one hundred and twenty works have been brought together and illustrated in this book; maker's marks are identified whenever possible and reproduced alongside the pieces on which they appear. Provenance and literature are also provided. An outline history of Hungary, followed by a brief survey of the goldsmith's craft and of the guild system, set the pieces in their historical context, while notes on the goldsmiths represented in the collection and an appendix of makers' and town marks complete this invaluable book.

Book A Concise History of Hungary

Download or read book A Concise History of Hungary written by Miklós Molnár and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive thousand-year history of the land, people, society, culture and economy of Hungary, from its nebulous origins in the Ural Mountains to the elections of 1988. It tells above all the thrilling story of a people which became a great power in the region and then fought against - and was invaded by - Ottomans, Germans and Soviets. The Hungarian people preserved nevertheless a continuous individuality through its Ural-born language and a specifically Hungaro-European culture. Dominated from the sixteenth century by the Habsburgs, while ruling its own national minorities, Hungary was deprived of two-thirds of its lands and peoples through successive treaties which followed the two World Wars, after which it fell under Soviet domination for nearly fifty years. Free and independent since 1990, Hungary continues to seek its rightful position in Europe.

Book Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince

Download or read book Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince written by Stella Mary Newton and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close study of clothes worn by aristocratic families and their households at the time of the Black Prince - and of Chaucer - showing Europe-wide influences. 1340 to 1363 were years remarkable for dramatic developments in fashion and for extravagant spending on costume, foreshadowing the later luxury of Richard II's court. Stella Mary Newton broke new ground with this detailed study, which discusses fourteenth-century costume in detail. She draws on surviving accounts from the Royal courts, the evidence of chronicles and poetry (often from unpublished manuscripts), and representations in painting, sculpture andmanuscript illumination. Her exploration of aspects of chivalry, particularly the choice of mottoes and devices worn at tournaments, and of the exchange of gifts of clothing between reigning monarchs, offers new insights into thesocial history of the times, and she has much to say that is relevant to the study of illuminated manuscripts of the fourteenth century. STELLA MARY NEWTON's lifelong interest in costume has been the mainspring of her work, from early days as a stage and costume designer (including designing the costumes for the first production of T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral) to her later work at the National Gallery advising on the implications ofcostume for the purpose of dating, and at the Courtauld Institute where she set up the department for the study of the history of dress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the First World War Fraknó and the Esterházy Castle, where the treasury had been kept since the 17th century, passed to Austria. The Esterházy family placed the major part of the Treasury with the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest. In 1944, during the Second World War, the Treasury was moved for greater safety to the Esterházy family palace which, during the siege of Budapest, was hit by a bomb. Part of the collection was totally destroyed or irreparably damaged. Every fragment possible was rescued and since the 1960s the conservators of the museum have worked on the conservation of the surviving pieces, miraculously returning many to their former glory. The final section in the exhibition covers this successful, ongoing conservation work.
